Davis, Natalie Zemon
Women on the margins : three seventeenth-century lives
Black glossy illustrated dj with archival mylar sleeve and burgundy cloth boards; 360 pages, 28 unnumbered pages of plates : b&w illustrations, maps ; 24 cm; bibliographical references (pages 219-339) and index. "As she did with Martin Guerre, Natalie Zemon Davis here retrieves individual lives from historical obscurity to give us a window onto the early modern world. As women living in the seventeenth century, Glikl bas Judah Leib, Marie de l'Incarnation, and Maria Sibylla Merian, equally remarkable though very different, were not queens or noblewomen, their every move publicly noted. Rather, they were living "on the margins" in seventeenth-century Europe, North America, and South America. Yet these women - one Jewish, one Catholic, one Protestant - left behind memoirs and writings that make for a spellbinding tale and that, in Davis' deft narrative, tell us more about the life of early modern Europe than many an official history. All these women were originally city folk. Glikl bas Judah Leib was a merchant of Hamburg and Metz whose Yiddish autobiography blends folktales with anecdotes about her two marriages, her twelve children, and her business. Marie de L'Incarnation, widowed young, became a mystic visionary among the Ursuline sisters and cofounder of the first Christian school for Amerindian women in North America. Maria Sibylla Merian, a German painter and naturalist, produced an innovative work on tropical insects based on lore she gathered from the Carib, Arawak, and African women of Suriname. The resulting triptych suggests the range of experience, self-consciousness, and expression possible in seventeenth-century Europe and its outposts. It also shows how persons removed from the centers of power and learning ventured in novel directions, modifying in their own way Europe's troubled and ambivalent relations with other "marginal" peoples." óPublisher.

A Fremont Jones Mystery No. 5. In the fifth of Dianne Day's acclaimed mysteries the intrepid Fremont's first joint sleuthing adventure with her partner Michael has explosive consequences that almost prove fatal for them both.

Fremont Jones and her "partner in love and work" Michael Archer have been hired to look into a series of petty vandalisms plaguing the Southern Pacific Railroad. They are riding a train incognito when it is blown to smithereens just east of Salt Lake City. Michael luckily suffers only a broken collarbone but Fremont simply disappears.

Holding stubbornly to the belief that she is still alive Michael sets out to find her. Meanwhile Fremont with a serious head injury and two broken legs has been spirited away from the site of the explosion by a dark and imperious rescuer--Melancthon Pratt a devout and dictatorial Mormon who already claims five wives and is bent on making Fremont his sixth. Awakening in Pratt's remote cabin confused and completely dependent on her captor Fremont can only concentrate on devising a mode of escape.

How she manages to get away--and how Michael is finally reunited with his partner while being pursued not only by a former rival in the world of international espionage but also by his and Fremont's would-be killer--creates the basis for a fascinating two-pronged suspense tale told from alternating points of view.

Death Train to Boston proves once more Dianne Day's ever-growing versatility and storytelling gifts. . Blue boards with gray spine imprinted in silver with title and author. Gold endpapers. Full number line 1 3 5 7 9 10 8 6 4 2 . 1.1 x 9.56 x 6.53 Inches. 320 pages. A Fremont Jones Mystery No. 4. Two years after the Great Earthquake that destroyed San Francisco and a year after the bitter misunderstanding that almost destroyed their budding romance Fremont Jones and Michael Archer are back in the City by the Bay this time committed to being "partners in life and work." Their life is shared as equals and their work is the private investigations agency they have opened together but--not surprisingly where Fremont is concerned--it's sometimes difficult to separate the two.

In fact it's her friendship with a slightly flighty pretty and troubled young woman that gets Fremont involved in her first murder investigation. Frances McFadden is besotted with spiritualism and the curious but skeptical Fremont agrees to accompany her to a séance. When Frances's husband finds out about their adventure her punishment is both degrading and galvanizing at once. Then two mediums are murdered Frances begins to discover her own talent for telepathy and takes a lover and Fremont becomes dangerously embroiled in her friend's illicit liaison.

While Fremont hones her investigative skills she also comes to a new appreciation of Michael's professional talents and his other special qualities as well. As in her three earlier mysteries Dianne Day provides "foggy period atmosphere a dash of dangerous romance" Minneapolis Star Tribune and a twisty new adventure for her intrepid sleuth.

Dianne Day spent her early years in the Mississippi Delta before moving to the San Francisco Bay area. Fremont Jones has appeared in three previous mysteries: The Strange Files of Fremont Jones which won the Macavity Award for Best First Novel and two bestselling sequels--Fire and Fog and The Bohemian Murders. Day who now lives in San Francisco is at work on her fifth Fremont Jones mystery Death Train to Boston. .
