Markus Julia
Across an Untried Sea: Discovering Lives Hidden in the Shadow of Convention and Time
Westminister Maryland U. S. A.: Alfred A Knopf Inc. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2000. First Edition. Hardcover. This book retrieves the lives of Victorian women - writers actresses poets journalists sculptors and social reformers - celebrated in their day but forgotten in ours. The author focuses in particular on the Americal Charlotte Cushmon the most famous English-speaking actress of her day; and on the Scottish Jane Welsh Carlyle a brilliant London hostess who gave up private ambition to become the wife of her friend Thomas Carlyle. Of this book Gloria Steinem said "Across an Untried Sea is as fascinating as any novel and as mind-blowing as every historical revelation. If forgetting is the root of oppression then Julia Markus has taken a big step toward freedom by uncovering the creative sexual enmeshed lives of nineteenth-century women of genius. " 331 pages including notes bibliography and index. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. . Alfred A Knopf Inc hardcover

New York: Mysterious Press. Very Good. 1993. Mass Market Paperback. No spine crease. 0.74 x 6.75 x 4.11 Inches. 272 pages. A Deborah Knott Mystery No. 1. Deborah Knott was expected to be a conventional little girl and eventually a conventional woman worshipped on a pedestal by a conventional husband.Instead she became an attorney infiltrating the old boy network that still rules the tobacco country of Colleton County North Carolina. Some say her success is a sign of the New South but no one knows better than she the power of the pasther familys long history in the area is a major asset in her campaign for district judge. Then again as the strong-willed daughter of Kezzie Knottnotorious bootlegger ex-con and political string-pullerhistory is also one of her greatest problems. But its an episode from the more recent past that threatens to derail her campaign. As a teen Deborah used to babysit little Gayle Whitehead for her mother Janie. One rainy spring day eighteen years ago both mother and daughter disappeared. When they were found three days later Gayle was dehydrated dirty and hungry.and Janie was dead. The unsolved murder became a local legend and an enigma that continues to haunt Gayle who now begs Deborah to investigate. With no real faith in her investigative skills Deborah asks a variety of questions on her campaign tour of the countys ralliesand soon her attention is distracted from the hurly-burly of politics by troubling new evidence. Deborah now faces the realization that the disadvantages of being the single female candidate in a southern judgeship race and even the disadvantages of being Kezzie Knotts daughter are nothing in comparison to posing a threat to a successful murderer. . Married Women Property
Extremely Rare Handbill on Married Women's New Rights to Own Property and Financial Control 1870
Married Women Their New Rights." 1870. Whittington Life Assurance Company. Extremely rare with 0 results on OCLC. 4 ¾ x 2 ¾ in. Excellent condition. This handbill was produced shortly after the 1870 Married Women's Property Act was passed which allowed women to keep their own wages inherit small sums of money and property. The handbill distributed by a life insurance company informs women on the different insurance policies that they are now able to buy with their new rights.

Before 1870 any money made by a woman either through a wage from investment by gift or through inheritance automatically became the property of her husband once she was married. Thus the identity of the wife became legally absorbed into that of her husband effectively making them one person under the law.3 Once a woman became married she had no claim to her property as her husband had full control and could do whatever suited him regarding the property: "Thus a woman on marrying relinquished her personal property-moveable property such as money stocks furniture and livestock--- to her husband's ownership; by law he was permitted to dispose of it at will at any time in the marriage and could even will it away at death". The above finally changed these laws to give women Rights to Own Property. unknown books

Married Women Property
Important Early Pamphlet of 1878 on Mother's Rights and Women's Property
The Hon. Mrs. Norton and Married Women." By Arthur Arnold. The Married Women's Property Committee. Manchester: A. Ireland and Co. Printers Pall Mall. 1878. 15 pages. 7 x 5 in. Vertical fold down center with creasing some losses and adhesive at edge from previous binding. Light toning. This pamphlet outlines the struggles that women faced on their road towards greater autonomy. Her husband withheld access to their sons from her as children were legally considered their father's property; her advocacy for mother's rights influenced legislation in the succeeding two Married Women's Property Acts of 1870 and 1882. The pamphlet acknowledges the role of her advocacy towards the passage of the 1870 act. unknown books
