In 1890, he also became the first Indian Vice-Chancellor of University of Calcutta. Banerjee briefly taught as an Assistant Lecturer in Mathematics, before joining the General Assembly's Institution, now known as the Scottish Church College, as a Professor of Mathematics. In 1888, Banerjee was appointed as a judge of the Calcutta High Court, retiring in 1904 from the Bench. He was knighted by the British government on 22 July 1904. He was also the President of the Board of Mathematics and Sanskrit during this time. He also became one of the teachers of Bengal National College of which the great freedom fighter, Aurobindo Ghosh, was the principal. He made notable contributions to the spread of education by making sure that Narkeldanga High School got raised to secondary standard. ‎br. Gérard Horst, questo il suo vero nome, viennese, incontra Dorine, giovane attrice inglese, nel 1947 in Svizzera dove lui si era rifugiato e dove lei faceva teatro. Da quel momento non si sono più lasciati. Cinquantotto anni dopo ripercorre gli anni della giovinezza e della militanza, dai primi incerti inizi parigini dove Gorz inizia la carriera di traduttore, di giornalista, poi di filosofo. E' una confessione senza veli, in cui il Gorz ammette di non aver sempre tenuto la moglie nella giusta considerazione, salvo poi riconoscere come l'intera sua opera porta il segno della presenza di Dorine, del suo sostegno, del dialogo sempre vivo tra loro. André e Dorine Gorz hanno attraversato insieme la seconda metà del Novecento, vivendo da comprimari le idee, le battaglie, le sfide sociali e personali di quest'ultima metà del secolo. Un racconto che è la storia di una vita, dell'impegno politico e intellettuale, ma anche il ritratto di un'epoca, dalla fine della guerra ai giorni nostri, di incontri con uomini straordinari, da Sartre a Marcuse. Lettera a D. si conclude con questa frase: "Vorremmo non sopravvivere l'uno alla morte dell'altro. Ci siamo detti che se, per assurdo, dovessimo vivere una seconda vita, vorremmo trascorrerla insieme". Gorz ha messo fine ai suoi giorni, insieme a sua moglie Dorine afflitta da una grave malattia, il 25 settembre 2007.‎
