Jules Joseph Augustin Laurens, commonly known as Jules Laurens was a French artist in drawing, painting, and lithography who is remembered above all for his Oriental works. One of a family of five, at the age of 12 he went to live with his brother, Jean-Joseph (1801¿1890) in Montpellier where he attended the city's art college while benefitting from his brother's artistic contacts. He went on to Paris, studying under Paul Delaroche at the École des Beaux-Arts, first exhibiting in 1840 and completing his studies in 1846. Chosen by the geographer Xavier Hommaire de Hell to join him on an extended scientific journey to Turkey and Persia, Laurens made over a thousand drawings of the sites, costumes and people he encountered on his travels. They included many portraits of Persian personalities. His biography "Nazar-Andaz" gives an account of de Hell's death at Isfahan in August 1848. Thanks to the French ambassador, Laurens was able to reach Teheran from where he sent back de Hell's notes together with his own drawings. Hundreds of them were presented in the Atlas historique et scientifique, the fourth volume of the Voyage en Turquie et en Perse published by de Hell's wife. Some of Laurens' lithographs were published in L'Illustration and Tour du Monde, both popular periodicals, while the originals, together with his early watercolours were given to the library of the École des Beaux-Arts. Laurens also painted examples of qajar art while in Persia, including his Danseuse au tambourin.‎

‎Georg Heinrich Crola (1804?1879) lebte in einer Zeit, als sich nach der preussischen Niederlage gegen Frankreich die Staatsstruktur grundlegend wandelte. Wirtschaft, Wissenschaft, Philosophie und Kunst entwickelten sich sprunghaft, burgerlich-liberales Denken setzte sich allmahlich durch im endlich einheitlichen deutschen Nationalstaat. Das industrielle Zeitalter begann. Georg Heinrich Crola wuchs in Dresden auf, sein Zeichentalent wurde fruh erkannt und gefordert, u. a. von Johan Christian Dahl und Caspar David Friedrich. Crola bekam ein Angebot, an den Hof des Herzogs von Coburg-Gotha zu gehen, begab sich aber lieber auf Wanderschaft. Im Harz fand er viele Malerfreunde. Auf Schloss Wernigerode beeindruckte ihn die religiose Toleranz der Grafenfamilie. Die Alpen bei Munchen wurden zu Motiven seiner schonsten Bilder. Er ging nach Dusseldorf, Berlin und immer wieder in den Harz, wo er sich ansiedelte, nachdem er 1840 die Malerin Elise von Weiher geheiratet hatte. In Ilsenburg fuhrten sie ein gastliches Haus, engagierten sich karitativ, von hier brachen sie immer wieder zu Reisen auf, wo neue Gemalde und Zeichnungen entstanden. In seinen Tagebuchern uber die Jahre 1807-1838, die hier erstmals publiziert sind, werden Begegnungen mit Christian Daniel Rauch, Schnorr von Carolsfeld, Ludwig Tieck und vielen anderen beschrieben. Die lesenswerten Reflexionen des Kunstlers sprechen von der Aufbruchsstimmung jener Jahre. Der Spatromantiker Crola hinterliess etwa 270 Gemalde. Sie wie auch seine schriftstellerische Arbeit weisen ihn als wichtigen Kunstler seiner Zeit aus, was der Band in Wort und Bild eindrucksvoll bestatigt. Edition Schloss Wernigerode. Band 13. Neue.‎

‎This study deals with the work of the most prolific Dutch book illuminators, the so-called Masters of the Dark Eyes, named after the most conspicuous aspect of their style: the dark, heavily accentuated shadows round the eyes of the figures. With their elaborately illuminated manuscripts, these masters completely dominated book production in the County of Holland during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Their work is characterized by an overwhelming wealth of decorative and pictorial richness, which is especially evident in the unusually ornate programmes of the Books of Hours, and a new type of border decoration derived from the Ghent-Bruges School. This style of painting was practised by many artists of differing talents, as demonstrated by the large number of surviving manuscripts. Not all of the illuminators worked in Holland. Some of them settled in the Southern Netherlands, others emigrated to England, where they illuminated manuscripts for members of the English court. This monograph seeks to order, analyze and evaluate the work of the Masters of the Dark Eyes, and to position their achievements within the context of book illumination in the Northern Netherlands during the 'Waning of the Middle Ages'. It explores a virtually uncharted territory of Dutch manuscript painting. The accompanying descriptive catalogue provides complementary information on more than 70 manuscripts, many of which have never been published at length before. The work is illustrated with a wide selection of colour and black-and-white reproductions. Languages: English.‎

Überregional bekannt wurde er ab den 80er Jahren durch seine kleinformatigen, zarten Ölbilder im Aktendeckelformat im weissen Rahmen, die er meist mit hintergründigen, ironischen Titeln versah. 1989 erhielt er zusammen mit seiner Ehefrau Romane Holderried-Kaesdorf den Oberschwäbischen Kunstpreis.-‎
