‎A FINE MINIATURE PAINTING OF A FUNERAL SCENE FROM A BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN‎

‎BEGINNING OF THE OFFICE OF THE DEAD‎

‎Paris early 15th century. 178 x 125 mm. 7 x 5". Text in single column four lines on recto 15 lines on verso in an excellent gothic book hand. A FINE SQUARE MINIATURE SHOWING A FUNERAL SERVICE two priests reciting from an elevated lectern and next to a large draped coffin mourners in black seated to the left the activity taking place inside a space enclosed by elegant columns and under a vaulted ceiling a lovely four-line initial beneath it in burnished gold and several colors infilled with ivy leaves in white and orange other one- or two-line initials in blue with red penwork or on the verso in burnished gold and colors THE MINIATURE SURROUNDED BY AN EXQUISITE FULL BORDER OF IVY LEAVES in colors or gold on painted and hairline stems. Remains of mounting hinge at top a few speckles a bit of yellowing and slight wrinkling in margins but the leaf very well preserved in general with no significant flaking of paint and with the gold still bright. Apart from those relatively few copies with illustrated calendars the miniatures found in Books of Hours are almost entirely devoted to retrospective Bible scenes that are obviously outside the experience of the illuminator; it is only in the present kind of funeral scene at the beginning of the Office of the Dead that we can see a contemporaneous rendering of a scene from the daily life of the Middle Ages. Miniatures that begin the Office of the Dead vary more in iconographic terms than any of the others that recur in the Book of Hours and while our painting is typical in subject matter and design it is noteworthy in at least a couple of ways. The frame and border here are beautifully executed in the style of the Boucicaut Master with much delicate and very elaborate painting all of which is shown to good advantage inside unusually comfortable margins. And although the miniature itself shows in general a relatively primitive attempt at perspective for example the pews and the altar are steeply raked the presence of the lovely slender column in the foreground in concert with the darkened vaulting behind the altar gives the painting a convincing sense of depth.The work here was done by an artist under Parisian influence and the developed architecture suggests that the painter was familiar with the Burial Services compositions created by Parisian illuminators in the 1410s. see Millard Meiss "French Painting in the Time of Jean de Berry: Boucicaut Master" London 1968 figs. 135-50 and 172-74. unknown‎

‎Paris: Gilles Hardouin ca 1510. 222 x 140 mm. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2". Single column 30 lines of text gothic typeface. Attractively matted. Verso with elaborate metalcut compartmentalized border featuring mischievous putti and grotesques the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and a woman shearing a sheep; the same side with 18 one-line hand-painted initials in gold on a blue or red ground two similar two-line initials and one three-line foliated initial in gold on a red ground; recto WITH A RICHLY PAINTED AND ILLUMINATED WOODCUT OF THE MASSACRE OF THE INNOCENTS with a glimpse of the flight into Egypt on the left side of the scene. A touch of wrinkling to lower outer corner verso with remnants of mounting tape otherwise A VERY FINE LEAF the printing clear and fresh the colors vivid and the gold lustrous. The massacre depicted here appears to be taking place in Herod's throne room as if he had ordered it for his own entertainment. Seated in the center of the piece on a massive gold throne he views the heartbreaking chaos before him impassively ignoring an angry women who is lifting her bleeding infant up to him as if to say "See what you've done!" The mothers here are not wailing in grief but are angrily fighting for their sons' lives. In the foreground a soldier pushes a golden-haired woman out of the way in order to finish off the dazed and wounded infant she and her companion are attempting to shield. On either side soldiers have raised swords to smite the helpless tots and to the right of Herod a bleeding infant looks pitifully up at the armored solder who holds him by the arm ready to deliver the fatal blow. In the upper right we see a baby impaled on a spear. A glimpse of hope through an open window mitigates the horror of the gruesome scene: we see Joseph leading a donkey bearing the Virgin and the Christ Child as they flee to Egypt blessed by golden rays streaming down from heaven. The action here is dramatic intense and memorable; the colors are vivid the heavy use of gold adding light to an overwhelmingly sober subject. ‎Catalogue of Early Netherlandish Painting: Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (CENP 5). The fifth volume examines all the works painted by anonymous masters. Most works of the 15th and early 16th centuries are not signed. Several of these works have not proved possible to attribute to a known painter or to a master with a provisional name. These works, labelled as anonymous, have been little studied until now, because they are in general thought to be of lesser quality, and because researchers have prioritised the study of more important masters. It is, however, becoming increasingly apparent that these reflect the ongoing production of the time in the Southern Netherlands. Beside the fact that these paintings represent the themes that enjoyed a certain popularity at the time, their study opens perspectives onto the socio-economic context and workshop practice. These paintings could be destined for a broad market and betray different working methods allowing for swift execution in several copies. Furthermore, two of these anonymous works, dating from around 1400 or a little bit later, rank amongst the rare representatives of pictorial production in the Southern Netherlands prior to the technical innovations introduced by the Flemish Primitives. ‎During the latter half of the eighteenth century, especially the period around and just after the French Revolution, what was happening in France in the field of painting restoration influenced all of Europe. In 1750 the museum in the Luxembourg Palace in Paris was opened to the public, and it became necessary to display to the public paintings which had been in storage for years. In the following decades King Louis XVI and his advisor, the Comte d'Angiviller, developed and enlarged the national collection of paintings. And with this came the need for painting restorers doing quality work - more than just the quick repairs as done by painters in the past - and several full-time painting restorers were employed. By the time the museum in the Louvre was opened to the public in 1793, in the midst of the French Revolution, the profession had been established. During the latter half of the eighteenth century, painting restoration techniques improved and French restorers began to travel to England and to other European countries more frequently, spreading their practical knowledge - especially about the lining and transfer of paintings. In Paris, a national concours was prepared to choose the most capable from a growing group of candidates, and in 1802 plans were drafted for a school of restoration. In this book the lives and careers of several of the more well-documented painting restorers for the French Royal Collection are traced one-by-one - including as much as possible about their restoration techniques. ‎The art of painting restoration is almost as old as the art of painting itself. Accidents and time inevitably alter the appearance of a painting, and these changes begin as soon as it leaves the artist's easel. Purposeful alterations due to changes in taste have also contributed to transformations that paintings often underwent. Clearly the type of restoration procedures considered ethically acceptable have changed over the centuries. From the Renaissance until the end of the nineteenth century, European paintings were considered as two-dimensional illusions of a three-dimensional space, and any disruption to this illusion was considered as damage requiring repair. There was no acknowledgement of painting supports as an integral part of a picture; only the paint layer and the subject represented were appreciated. As a result, panels were often thinned and cradled in order to flatten the painted surface so that the image depicted could be viewed with less distraction. Supports were even considered replaceable. Total transfer of a painted surface onto a new surface was an acceptable procedure in the eighteenth century - even until the mid-twentieth century. Invisible retouching was used with the intent of returning the illusion of the painted surface to its 'original state'; the history of the work was not important. Until recent times, it was even acceptable to alter the format of a work of art to fit a frame or a space on the wall. Traditionally, if a painting was accidentally damaged or if 'adjustment' were required, a painter was entrusted with this task. In the past, the professions of painter and painting restorer overlapped, and both were trained as apprentices. Gradually the professional painting restorer appeared in Europe, and by the mid-eighteenth century, the profession was established. Earlier examples of professional restorers, especially in Italy, have been recorded while in other European countries, such as Britain, the career of the professional painting restorer began much later. During the later part of the eighteenth century in France, the painting restorers of the French Royal Collection became celebrated throughout Europe for their achievements. The political situation had an important influence on the development of the profession in France. The reigns of Francois I (1515-47), Louis XIV (1643-1715), Louis XVI (1774-93), and then the coup d'etat by Napoleon Bonaparte and the First Napoleonic Empire (1804-14) led to an increasing centralisation of the French Empire. The arts were meant to reflect the power of the state; thus Louis XIV and his political advisor and Surintendent from 1661 to 1685, Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-83), became the patrons of the French Academie de Peinture et Sculpture founded in 1648. A revision of the Academy's statutes in 1665 required students to submit annually drawings that focused on the heroic actions of the king. Paintings conferred status on their owner - in this instance the king and the French nation. It then became a necessity to have the paintings on display looking their best, and the skill of the French painting restorers was even used as a justification for Napoleon's policy of confiscation of works of art from all over Europe. The relationship between the French government's administration, firstly under the Ancien Regime, then under the new Republic, and the painting restorers they employed and supervised is related in this book. The manner in which changes occurred involves colourful personalities whose stories are often amusing and sometimes poignant, but above all they help us to understand the present-day situation. For during the turbulent years of the French Revolution new patterns emerged, which to a large extent remained in place in France for over two centuries. New book.‎

‎On 26 February 1622, in Paris, Rubens entered into a contractual agreement to execute two series of paintings, ?by his own hand?, intended to decorate the two parallel galleries of the Parisian palace ? the so-called Luxembourg Palace ? of Maria de? Medici, widow of Henri IV and mother of Louis XIII. Completed in 1625, the twenty-four monumental paintings of the western gallery exalting the life of the Queen Mother form a universally admired ensemble, on display at the Musee du Louvre for the last two centuries. However, the second part of this grand project, envisioned for the eastern gallery of the palace, was abandoned in 1630. The suspension and then premature termination of the project after the Queen Mother?s exile in July 1631 have deprived us of a work that would have been unique, both in its magnitude and in the artistic means Rubens deployed to glorify the royal couple. The Galerie Henri IV, planned as a commemoration of the king?s military victories and a celebration of his triumphs ?in the manner of the triumphs of the Romans? (as the contract has it), remains a puzzle whose missing pieces are more numerous than what is preserved. Still, some fifteen works ? preparatory oil-sketches on panel and large canvases, more or less completed ? have survived. It is above all through the study of these works that this volume aims to arrive at a better understanding of the context, the iconography, and the political significance of the Galerie Henri IV. Despite the frustration (for us, as for Rubens himself) of its abandonment, the unfinished project remains an extraordinary feat of Baroque encomium, and one of the artist?s greatest masterpieces.‎

‎This book traces the cultural context of book illustration, its production, owners, and makers in the various regions of France in the last third of the thirteenth and beginning of the fourteenth centuries. The period c. 1260-1320 marks the emergence and the flowering of what has come to be known as the ?courtly style? in French painting, whose dynamic vitality is manifest throughout the region we now call France. By the end of this period French art had assimilated a rich variety of regional works and styles. New texts had been introduced to a range of patrons, and patterns to be played out in the following centuries were in place. This book traces the cultural context of book illustration, its production, owners, and makers in the various regions of France in the last third of the thirteenth and beginning of the fourteenth centuries. While the royal, courtly, academic and ecclesiastical patrons were critical to the cultural and artistic production of the capital, books made in provincial centres manifest an independence and originality that can be attributed to fruitful interaction with neighbouring cultures?the linguistic, literary, and artistic traditions of England in the north and west, Navarre, Aragon, the county of Barcelona and the Kingdom of Majorca in the Pyrenean regions, and the Empire along the eastern borders, from the principalities of North Italy and the Alpine regions to Burgundy, Hainaut and Flanders. Ecclesiastical boundaries cut across political divisions, contributing different sets of allegiances that impacted upon book culture in other ways. The Provinces of Reims and Tarantaise included fiefs of Empire, while Narbonne (to 1317) encompassed dioceses in Aragon, and the Provinces of Bordeaux and Tours lay in part in lands held by the English. The religious orders and the universities offered other sets of governing structures and vehicles of influence and reception. Royal and courtly patrons took their place in this period alongside churchmen and women and layfolk from the burgeoning bourgeois class, many of whom are known from ownership notes or inventories. Yet some of the finest books of the period were made for people whose identity remains obscure. Similarly the names of craftsmen?scribes, decorators, illuminators?are often known from their signatures in the books they made or from payments and other records, yet many distinguished works are the products of anonymous creators. These years witnessed an explosition in the range of texts that were deemed worthy of illustraton, extending far beyond the usual liturgical and devotional material to include works of science, medicine, law, philosophy, history and literature in verse and prose, offering a wealth of material for comparative study which is only beginning to be exploited in modern scholarship. This book is organized according to production in regional centres based on stylistic analysis and by comparative tables of the illustration of liturgical and devotional books, and a selection of romances, legal and historical works. ‎The subject of the present publication is the working practices of the Ghent-Bruges illuminators, active in Flanders in the decades around 1500. The author traces how this decorative system was created by the Master of the David Scenes in the Grimani Breviary, a prolific inventor of appealing borders; how it was applied by his closest collaborators, and how it was imitated and adapted by other illuminators. The author elucidates the sources for the isolated motifs and demonstrates how the codicological structure of the manuscripts provides insight into the use and the dispersion of various models for border decorations. The book discusses the famous strewn-flower borders and other types of fully decorated borders as well. The author analyses the isolated motifs in relationship to the page lay-out and the decorative programme of Ghent-Bruges standardised books of hours.
