Three comparative essays on Turkish music.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In English. 180 p. This book scrutinizes three different theoretical aspects of Ottoman sources. The first essay discusses the principles of makam classification proposed by diverse Ottoman writers and compares their ideas within socio-cultural setting. The resulting analogies and polarities are outlined in order to emphasize the essential ideas in the perspective of musical creativity. The second essay explores Dimitrie Cantemir's compositions and establishes the authenticity of the pieces that have circulated in the general repertory of Turkish classical music under his signature. The provenance of the compositions evidences the way written and oral sources crossed borders and combined as to further generate new materials out of a commixture of original and derivative elements. In essence, oral tradition has interacted and interfered in forming Cantemirian repertory adding versions and variants that were transmitted independently and were accepted as authoritative creations by the community of musicians and the public of music lovers. The third essay evokes the personality of Hasan Talat Bey of Bebek, a remarkable patron of musicians and collector of music, who sponsored weekly musical gatherings in his mansion. There gathered frequently the music makers, creators and performers of songs and instrumental pieces. The happening of music gatherings was memorialized in the tablets with written music and decorative embellishments the host used to offer the guests as souvenirs. In addition, the discussion includes the survey of the song collection owned by Hasan Talat with title entries.

Editorial sturdy green cloth with bright gilt lettering on front board and spine, spine slightly faded and light foxing on pastedowns and endpapers otherwise a very good, nice copy, crisp and clean. Important work by the Italian scientist Galileo Ferraris, originally published in Italian as The Fundamental Properties of Dioptric Instruments, here translated into English by Oscar Faber. From the review which apperared in Nature, the scientific journal: "The original of this translation was published by Prof. Galileo Ferraris, of Turin, in 1876. As a copy of this original could apparently not be procured, the English translation was made from a German one by Lippich, which appeared in 1879. At the time of its appearance the book unquestionably marked a great advance in the treatment of its subject, and well deserved the extremely favourable review with which Abbe honoured the German translation in the first volume of the Zeitschrift für Instrumentenkunde."

Rev. Francis William Galpin musicologist. Autograph Card Signed and Autograph Letter Signed both 'F. W. Galpin' to the author Austin Dobson regarding the Broad Oak in Hatfield Forest.
The card dated 30 August 1904 no place . The letter addressed from Hatfield Vicarage Harlow Essex ; 7 May 1906. Both items in good condition with light signs of age. The card with postmarks is addressed to 'Austin Dobson Esq 75 Eaton Rise Ealing W.' The letter is also to Dobson but is only addressed 'Dear Sir'. In the card he reports that 'The old oak in the forest is now in ruins and quite dead. It has been surrounded with a railing and a young tree planted by its side.' He offers to send a photograph and asks for 'anthing about my parish which you may publish'. In the letter he states that having recovered Dobson's address from the Rector of Little Hallingbury he is sending a view of 'the ancient "Broad Oak" in Hatfield Forest' and repeats the news regarding its present state. The card dated 30 August 1904 [ no place ]. The letter addressed from Hatfield Vicarage, Harlow [ Essex ]; 7 May 1906. unknown
