George Francis Lyon 1795-1832 was part of the great British explorers of the early 19th century. Under William Parry's second expedition in the Fury to find the Northwest Passage 1821-23 he commanded the Helca. This expedition spent two winters in the Arctic attempting to meet John Franklin's land expedition to the Coppermine River. The time allowed Lyon to spend time with the Eskimos and learn their language and culture This journal is considered one of the first anthropologist studies of the Eskimos. James Archibald Houston 1921-2005 was a Canadian artist and expert in Inuit art. His introduction to this book and pen and ink illustrations give the Lyon journal a focus as a thoughtful observer on the Inuit culture. Lyon wrote "I verily believe that there does not not exist a more honest set of people.". Arctic Biblio 10531 Hill 1053 Howgego II L52. George Francis Lyon 1795-1832 was a British naval officer and explorer of the Arctic and Africa. He served in the Mediterranean during the Napoleon wars and later assigned to an expedition in North Africa with Joseph Ritchie to explore the Niger river area. He was selected by William Edward Parry to command the Hecla in 1821-1823 for an expedition to the Northern coast of Hudson Bay to find the Northwest Passage. He was one of the "Barrow Boys" Captains that were favored by Sir John Barrow 1764-1848 Secretary to the Admialty to command Arctic exploration. From Hill Lyon ". observed the habits of life and traits of character of the different tribes of the 'Esquimaux' as captain of the Hecla during Parry's second Arctic Expedition in 1821-23. The Fury and Hecla sailed in 1821 in search of a Northwest Passage and succeeded in examining Repulse Bay and the Fury and Hecla Strait." Includes detailed account of the Eskimos of southern Baffin Island and Melville Peninsula; the natural history and ice conditions of the region traversed particularly a difficult passage through Hudson Strait." The map included in this book is detailed and shows the ships' track through the straits and along the east coast of Melville Peninsula to Cockburn Is. and Fury & Hecla Strait. Steve Fossett 1944-2007 was a successful commodities trader and an adventurer that set world records in balloons sailboats gliders and unique powered aircraft. In the 1980's Fossett began developing a library collection of over 2000 books on adventure and exploration. His collection included significant and authoritative accounts of aeronautics polar Asia Australasia circumnavigation's mountaineering and others. In 2007 Fossett disappeared on a solo flight in a light aircraft over the eastern Sierra Mountains along the California and Nevada border. After an extensive search the wreckage was found by hikers a year later along the rugged Mt. Ritter range in the Ansel Adams Wilderness in Madera County about 10 miles east of Yosemite National Park.
