Bowes-Lyon 1895-1949 was from an aristocratic background and was first cousin to the Queen Mum as well as the mistress of Laurens van der Post for a while. Something of a bohemian free-thinker she chose to live in Stepney in the East End of London 1942-45 until her diabetes forced her to seek better accomodation. She worked for and was a champion of the poor and had her cousin the Duke of Kent and Anthony Eden over to flat for a good talking-to. She published two novels and six volumes of poetry. .
