Belgian pictorialist photographer. (1870-1943). Born in provincial southern Belgium into a prosperous family, Misonne studied mining engineering, but never practiced it, preferring to devote himself entirely to photography from 1896 onwards. A prominent presence in the first wave of pictorialism, Misonne travelled widely and learned the bromoil process from Emile Constant Puyo in Paris in 1910. As a figurehead of the pictorialist movement in Belgium, he acquired a lasting reputation for landscapes, bucolic and timeless, a genre he would exploit throughout his life. Misonne's work tended to express a conservative aesthetic, although the later townscapes outgrew the underlying anecdotal sentimentality present in some of his earlier views. The images are characterized by a masterly treatment of light and atmospheric conditions, as summed up in Misonne's credo 'Le sujet n'est rien, la lumiere est tout' ('The subject is nothing, light is everything'). While the subject matter remained more or less constant over half a century of activity, Misonne's chosen medium evolved towards more manipulated processes?from carbon printing, including the Fresson process, until 1910-15, by way of bromoil until 1930-5, up to a final phase using mediobrome.

A portion, previously not fully explored, of historical information about Al-Quds/Jerusalem is embodied in the postcards and souvenir objects featuring the city. These items, that were posted or kept by visitors, are assets of cultural heritage and hold anthropological value both for their own sake and for the thoughts and purposes attached to them. "Souvenir of Jerusalem" sheds light on this valuable legacy. The book contains reproductions of postcards, posters, and photographs of various objects that Mr. Murat Kargili had assembled in his personal collection and supplemented with annotations. The book came out in IRCICA s series of studies on al-Quds and Palestine. Earlier IRCICA published albums of historical photographs of al-Quds (Al-Quds/Jerusalem in historical photographs, 2009; Jerusalem in Historical Photographs From Past to Present, 2015) but this is the first publication to focus on postcards and artefacts. The first chapter of the book is reserved to postcards, with annotations on the quarters, structures and scenes of life. The second chapter contains a large variety of printed materials such as posters, trade cards, gravures and maps featuring a fascinating range of subjects and objects. The last chapter is devoted to souvenir objects acquired from Jerusalem. IRCICA is pleased to publish this album which mirrors Al-Quds of the late 19th early 20th centuries. The said album came out in a deluxe edition printed on archival-quality paper. It features more than 150 printed materials such as postcards, maps, engravings, posters, trade cards and pictures of souvenir objects which will take the reader on a journey to Al-Quds; this main sacred city that has seen the longest state rule in its history under Muslims administration.

"57 UNDERGROUND OPIUM DEN CHINATOWN SAN FRANCISCO CAL" Color card shows the dank dark basement type opium den common to the San Francisco area in the early 1898-1900's. Shows 4 Chinese men one with a long queue 3 smoke the opium pipe. Verso is blank but printed: "Authorized by act of Congress of May 19 1898. This could be close to that date. . f. "SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA UNDERGROUND OPIUM DEN CHINATOWN." This is similar to the above but a full-sized card color view. Front also states: "Published & Manif. by the Galloway Lithographing Co. S.F. Cal." Verso is blank unused. . g. "CHINESE OPIUM DEN 614 JACKSON STREET CHINATOWN SAN FRANCISCO THE CAT HAS BECOME ADDICTED TO THE FUMES OF THE DRUG." Color photo with 1905 dated ink message on the front cover also on the front is: " Britton & Rey Lithographers San Francisco 512." Verso is addressee postmark round dated and cancelled one-cent stamped with 1905 postmark. Shows a Chinese man with queue hair style smoking an opium pipe a cat sits on his body being held in place by the man's hand. . h. "OPIUM AND PIPE SMOKERS." Color card shows 6 Chinese with queue hair styles two smoke opium. Verso is with penned message dated 1910 round-dated stamp with half-penny stamp addressed to Jersey a UK island.
