La rivoluzionaria teoria presentata in questo volume, da quasi un secolo un classico della letteratura medica, si basa su un presupposto semplice e coraggioso: è possibile correggere i più comuni difetti della vista con metodi naturali, senza ricorrere a interventi chirurgici o a lenti, e operando da soli, senza l'ausilio di medici. Dopo molti anni di ricerche e sperimentazioni, William H. Bates, un brillante medico chirurgo che lavorò tra gli Stati Uniti e l'Inghilterra, arrivò alla conclusione che la maggior parte degli individui porta occhiali di cui in realtà non ha bisogno. Nel 1921 teorizzò un approccio alla cura dei difetti visivi imperniato sul rilassamento mentale, con esercizi alla portata di tutti, da svolgere a casa (ma non solo), giorno dopo giorno, in piena autonomia, col fine di ristabilire in modo naturale la capacità visiva degli occhi. Fra gli esercizi più celebri, quelli che richiedono di spostare lo sguardo da destra verso sinistra e viceversa, più volte; di roteare gli occhi sbattendo ritmicamente le palpebre; di alternare periodi di luce a periodi di buio totale, utilizzando le mani per non far filtrare la luce. Bates e dà semplici istruzioni per l'auto-trattamento con l'aiuto delle quali tante persone sono state capaci di guarire se stesse. Dice il Dott. Bates: "Sulla pagina due di questa rivista vengono stampate ogni mese delle specifiche direttive per migliorare la vista in modi varii. Fin troppi abbonati leggono la rivista una volta e poi la smarriscono. Ci pare che almeno la pagina due debba essere conservata come riferimento". Questo volume contiene la serie completa delle 132 'pagina due' in edizione integrale: "Assicuratevi di rivedere frequentemente la pagina due; non soltanto per il vostro speciale beneficio ma anche per il beneficio degli individui che desiderate aiutare!". Nella seconda parte del volume, pubblichiamo tutte le "domande e risposte" tratte dalla omonima rubrica nella quale il dott. Bates rispondeva direttamente alle problematiche individuali dei singoli suoi pazienti specificando ancora meglio alcune caratteristiche dei suoi metodi di cura della vista imperfetta attraverso riposo e rilassamento.
