Coffin Charles Carleton
MY DAYS AND NIGHTS ON THE BATTLEFIELD
Chicago: M.A. Donohue & Company 1887. Coffin was a highly-respected Civil War journalist who reported from the battlefront from the start of the war to its end. A New Hampshire native home-schooled and self-taught and a staunch abolitionist Coffin reported on many of the Civil War's great battles from the Union side though his reporting was noted for its impartiality. He wrote "My Days and Nights" in 1864 it was first published in 1865 as a book to provide younger readers with an explanation for the War. The introduction is "To the Youth of the United States" and the first chapter titled "How the Rebellion Came About." However those same youth served in both armies and Coffin addresses them as adults. Published today it would probably be considered adult material. The book was reprinted by many publishers; this copy is from an 1887 edition a First Edition Thus probably a First Printing. About 5 1/4 x 7 3/4 inches 312 pages in blue-grey cloth-covered boards with a pictorial design on front cover and spine in redwhite and blue with white lettering. Includes frontispiece and several other black & white illustrations as well as battlefield maps and diagrams and a glossary of military terms. Boards and spine show light wear and minor soiling and staining; lettering and pictorial decoration of Union soldier on horse with flag has retained its clear lines and bright colors. Interior and exterior hinges intact binding firm. Text edges are soiled with some foxing and fep title page and illustrations show age-toning. Previous owner's signature on fep. Frontispiece and title page show small damp stains at edges and corners. Remainder of text is clean complete and unmarked no tears no chipping or crreasing. Sorry no dustjacket. Overall a very decent example of the work of a writer and journalist who has been called the "Ernie Pyle" of the Civil War. . Decorative Cloth. Good/No Jacket. M.A. Donohue & Company Hardcover
