HMS GANGES 1865-1976 was the Royal Navy's junior rates training establishment at Shotley in Suffolk. Vice-Admiral Alexander Gordon Cumming Madden was then Second Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Personnel. During WWII he commanded BIRMINGHAM and ANSON. Privately Printed Durban n.d.1946. 4to. First Edition with frontispiece 25 plates on 18 numerous illustrations one full-page in the text and front endpaper map in red and black; original grey-blue cloth upper board blocked with ship's crest in blue very neatly recased with old endpapers preserved covers lightly age-marked else a very good bright clean copy. This copy was formerly in the possession of G.A.J. Seymour possibly Chief Shipwright. HMS Howe's last wartime commission took her from Scapa Flow to Auckland including the UK naval ports Gibraltar Algiers Port Said Suez Aden Bombay Trincomalee Singapore Colombo Fremantle Sydney and Auckland. Then she travelled across the Pacific to take part in air strikes against Leyte. Then back to Fremantle and on to Durban where this publication seems to have been printed Cape Town Mombassa the Seychelles and Colombo again after which she retraced her outward route back to the UK. This record is the usual ship's mixture of chronology geography anecdote private reminiscence humour cartoons and Crossing the Line. There is much coverage of her gunnery for which she was renowned throughout the Pacific Fleet. AN IMPORTANT AND VALUABLE ADDITION TO THE OPERATIONAL RECORD OF THE KGV BATTLESHIPS IN WWII. RARE. Paris, Domère, 1819 ; in-8, broché, couv. muette marbrée, entièrement non rogné. (État de parution). 504 pp.Ces lettre avaient d’abord paru à Gand en 1817. “La première édition de ces souvenirs consacrés aux Cent Jours par un Anglais alors retenu à Paris, plus à l’Empereur par sa compréhension sympathique tout en le heurtant en raisons d’inexactitudes qu’il corrigea sur son exemplaire de Sainte-Hélène.” Tulard 701.Cette nouvelle traduction, précédée d’une intéressante préface de l’éditeur Domère (au sujet de la censure et des délits commis par voie de publication) est de REGNAULT-WARIIN. Elle valut à son auteur et au libraire une condamnation à la destruction le 25 oct. 1819, comme contenant des offenses envers la personne du roi et des membres de la famille royale. L’éditeur fut condamné à 6 mois de prison, et Regnault Warin à un an d’emprisonnement et tous les deux à 1000 francs d’amende. Drujon p. 195 - Quérard IV, 113.J. B. Regnault-Warin, né à Bar le Duc en 1775, fut un des auteurs les plus féconds et les plus variés de son temps. “Il écrivit dans tous les genres sans qu’on puisse en citer aucun, professe toutes les opinions, se mêla à tous les partis, sans y être remarqué, sans y avoir jamais obtenu le moindre crédit ni la plus légère influence” dit Michaud t.78 p. 416. Sous la Révolution le jeune lorrain “monta” à Paris, s’aventura dans les milieux politiques et littéraires puis se targua de toutes sortes d’aventures imaginaires. Le fameux roman noir Cimetière de la Madeleine le rendit célèbre tout en lui attirant la haine du parti révolutionnaire. Ensuite il courtisa tous les régimes sans rien obtenir d’aucun. Il mourut en 1844 presque de misère, dans un petit logement de la rue St Victor où il se faisait appeler M. Saint Edme. Ses romans noirs sont aujourd’hui frénétiquement recherchés par les amateurs du genre.
