John MacDonald engineer and son of Flora MacDonald. Autograph notes on 'Mr. Winstanleys Original Lighthouse constructed on the Edystone i.e. Eddystone Rock 12 Miles from Plymouth and finished in 1698 after a labour of four years. No. 2.'
Neither place nor date stated c. 1824. On two pieces of paper one roughly 9.5 x 17.5 cm and the other 2.5 x 13.5 cm laid down on a piece of grey card. Note on card in a nineteenth-century hand: 'Colonel John Macdonald's writing -'. In fair condition on aged paper on good strong card. The notes were apparently intended to accompany a plan the words 'An Elevation of' being scored through at the beginning of the heading as is a five-line passage beginning 'No 1'. Beneath this deleted passage is a nine-line expanded version of it beginning: 'No 1 proving insufficient as to strength and light Mr. Winstanley constructed this Building incorporating the former .'. The four-line passage on the smaller piece of paper concerns Smeaton's third lighthouse constructed 'on the principle of an Oak Tree' and said to have 'now stood firm during 126 years'. The dating is clearly mistaken with MacDonald probably calculating from 1698 the date of the completion of Winstanley's lighthouse. Neither place nor date stated [ c. 1824?]. unknown

Australia; John Ticehurst harpsichordist war hero. Typescript of article 'Harpsichordist to Australia' giving an account of his 1951/2 tour to Australia. With photograph label regarding an Adelaide Town Hall recital and concert programme.
Ticehurst's account without date or place but referring to a tour of Australia April 1951 to February 1952. Michael Howard's obituary of Ticehurst in The Times 30 October 1975 describes him as 'a persuasive pioneer among those who sought to reestablish the harpsichord as a serious musical instrument'. ONE: Carbon typescript 7pp. 4to. Headed 'Harpsichord to Australia by John Ticehurst.' With a few minor manuscript marks. In autograph next to the title: 'April 1951/Feb 1952'. In good condition on lightly-aged paper with slight rust staining from paperclip. A sprightly account apparently unpublished beginning: 'I must admit that when the idea first originated of a harpsichord tour in Australia the difficulties of such an undertaking seemed somewhat formidable. But the idea of introducing the harpsichord to audiences on the other side of the world who had for the majority neither seen nor heard one 'in the flesh" coupled with the project of meeting cousins whom we had always promised to visit "someday" sic let alone a daughter out in Canberra on a two-year contract finally proved an inducement great enough to determine us to overcome the obstacles.' He describes the difficulties surrounding the transportation of his 'eighteenth-century KIrkman' across the world and its arrival at the first venue Sydney University's Great Hall with 'not a string broken not a jack sticking nor - the worst of nightmares - a cracked soundboard'. From Sydney he travels to Canberra Brisbane and Melbourne before returning to Sydney. In conclusion he sums up the trip as 'a strenuous time but a most interesting bit of musical pioneering which one felt had been really worthwhile'. TWO: Slip of paper intended to provide the caption for the reverse of a photograph. Heavily damaged. Reads: 'Harpsichordist John Ticehurst of England with his harpsichord at Adelaide Town Hall – set up his instrument & having correctly balansed sic same – played 3 short pieces on request to appreciative press reps.' He Ordered Completed Several Of The Initial First Steps Needed To Implement The Draft Prior To Congressional Authorization. He Was Promoted To Colonel On January 8 1918 And To Brigadier General On April 15 1918 The Youngest Person To Reach The Rank Of Brigadier General Since The Civil War. Johnson Was Appointed Director Of The Purchase And Supply Branch Of The General Staff In April 1918 And To Assistant Director Of The Purchase Storage And Traffic Division Of The General Staff In October 1918. He Favorably Impressed Many Businessmen Including Bernard Baruch Head Of The War Industries Board. Johnson Was Named Assistant General Manager Of The Moline Plow Company On September 1 1919. In 1927 He Become An Adviser To Bernard Baruch. He Joined The Brain Trust Of Franklin D. Roosevelt In The 1932 Presidential Election. His Major Role Was Drafting Speeches Most Notably One That Fdr Delivered In Pittsburgh Denouncing The Reckless Spending Of The Hoover Administration And Calling For A Very Conservative Fiscal Policy. In 1933 Roosevelt Appointed Johnson To Administer The National Recovery Administration Nra. Big Business And Labor Unions Both Turned Hostile. The Nra Cursed At The Time Has Remained The Epitome Of Political Aberration Illustrative Of The Pitfalls Of "Planning" And Deplored Both For Hampering Recovery And Delaying Genuine Reform. He Distributed Copies Of A Fascist Tract Called "The Corporate State" By One Of Benito Mussolini's Favorite Economists Bruno Biagi Including Giving One To Frances Perkins And Asking Her To Give Copies To Roosevelt's Cabinet. Perkins Feared That Johnson Looked On Italian Fascist Corporativism As A Kind Of Model For The American Economy And She Convinced Roosevelt To Fire Him In September 1934. The Nra Continued To Deteriorate-It Was Abolished In 1935. Upon Leaving The Roosevelt Administration Johnson Who Had Long Been A Successful Essay Writer For National Magazines Now Became A Syndicated Newspaper Columnist Specializing In Political Commentary. He Supported Roosevelt In The 1936 Presidential Election But When The Court-Packing Plan Was Announced In 1937 He Denounced Roosevelt As A Would-Be Dictator. In 1939 He Endorsed Isolationism-Staying Out Of World War Ii; He Endorsed Wendell Willkie The Republican Candidate In The 1940 Presidential Election. Johnson Wrote A Number Of Articles And Stories.
