and Vernor & Hood 1795. The "Third Edition Corrected" first published 1760 all editions fairly uncommon just 5 locations for the current on WorldCat. Appealing "conduct book" for young officers; "The time employed in reading them will neither be long nor I flatter myself entirely thrown away. Some things I have said in them may so effectually open your eyes to conviction and reason that if you have unhappily given into any of those vices I have pointed at they may promote a reformation in you and a detestation of them. For believe me Gentlemen you will not be the worse soldiers for being good and temperate men and Christians" to the reader. It was certainly well-received on first publication The Gentleman's Magazine considering that it was "not only a most useful but an entertaining performance" July 1760. Slightly later ownership inscription of "G. Newby Junr" to the front pastedown. Duodecimo 167 x 101 mm. Tables to the text. Contemporary tree sheep gilt rules to the spine. A little rubbed particularly at the spine which is slightly stripped tan-burn to the margins of the endpapers marginal damp-stain to the first 8 leaves light browning to the text-block but overall very good and remains attractive. unknown

IMAGES OF JAPANESE CAVALRYMEN IN THE LATE-1930'S AS COLLECTED IN A PHOTO ALBUM
1937. Oblong 4to photograph album 24 leaves of stiff black paper with photographs mounted mostly two or more to a page. Approximately 65 of the photographs are portraits of individual cavalrymen with collar insignia indicating service with the 25th Cavalry Regiment of the 4th Cavalry Brigade Imperial Japanese Army; the uniforms also show the scalloped pocket flap on the tunic introduced for all ranks by 1930. The other 30 or so photographs picture the cavalrymen in official and informal settings on horseback in groups small and large with some including background buildings. All of the photographs are clear and sharp with the exception of two or three that seem to be overexposed. Original embossed cloth tied. 7176. The 25th Cavalry Regiment from 1937 until the "outbreak of the China Incident" a reference to the Second Sino-Japanese War was based in the city of Toyohashi in the eastern Aichi Prefecture. One photograph shows the gates to a compound now part of Aichi University which had been used in the late 1930s as the army reserve officer school of the 4th Cavalry Brigade. There are also two photographs of what we have identified as the Toyokawa Inari a Buddhist Temple in the city of Toyokawa a short distance for Toyohashi. One of those images shows soldiers gathered with their children in front of the temple; it was the custom to go to the shrine with families before going off to war for good luck. Several of the photographs picture the soldiers who had care of the horses for the troops and another pictures what appears to be a "commissary" with two soldiers sitting stiffly behind a counter protecting goods which include cans and bottle plus a few boxes of "breakfast cocoa" so labeled in English. The more casual photographs include one of a group of Japanese men in both traditional and western dress enjoying a meal; they are posed seated on the floor which is strewn with many dishes of foods and bottles of drink. Another informal photograph pictures eight men one in uniform one in traditional dress the rest in western clothes four with Panama-style hats posed with a pair of kewpie dolls an unauthorized version of the kewpie doll was manufactured in Japan in the 1920s. An excellent photographic look at Japanese military life on the eve of World War II. <br/><br/> hardcover books

A very well preserved copy of this handsomely presented compendious pocket reference this example as offered on the title page "bound 3s with an Almanack and Succession of Colonels"; Rider's British Merlin present bound immediately after the engraved regimental and militia lists the succession at the rear. In it's time an expensive little volume probably costing the equivalent of £300 in real terms. As well as the indispensable almanac/calendar and the advertised military reference the contents also include an alphabetical listing of the peers the commons alphabetically and by constituency occupants of offices of state the courts the Lord Mayor and aldermen of London physicians licensed to practise in London the rates of watermen and a list of the "West India Governors and Agents &c." which includes North America with Benjamin Franklin appearing as Agent for the Province of Pensilvania sic. Attractive and highly informative an excellent copy. Duodecimo in 6s 132 x 78 mm. 5 pages of hand-coloured engraved uniform schema astrological woodcut to the almanac the title page and calendar part of which are printed on red and black 2 folding engraved tables of Army and Navy pay rates. Original red morocco gilt low bands with zig-zag tooling title direct to second compartment date to the third the others with triple fillet panel enclosing open lozenge surrounded by stars and dots both boards with narrow hound's tooth roll enclosing a broad elaborate chevron roll border palm leaf/arabesque tools in opposing corners central lozenge device composed of floral devices chevron roll to the board edges all edges gilt Old Dutch marbled endpapers. Report on Foreign Manoeuvres. 1907-12.
London: Prepared by the General Staff War Office 1908-13. First editions of an extremely uncommon series of confidential reports. The print-runs were between 550 to 800 but institutional holdings just a single copy of an issue for 1906 in the IWM and one for 1912 at KCL; WorldCat showing only an 1895 precursor to the series at NLW are so sparse as to suggest that very few were ever issued. These copies have occasional ink-stamps of the Royal Army Medical Corps library. These are highly detailed and important reports from the British army's observers at the manoeuvres of the major foreign powers - varying year to year but including France Germany Austria-Hungary China Japan Russia Turkey and the United States - in the years leading up to the First World War. As well as remarking on the specifics of organization tactics and techniques there are summaries drawing more general conclusions: the increasing realism of these operations; the importance of staff work; and the "greatly extended employment of mechanical transport." 6 vols octavo. Half-tone illustrations from photographs and line drawings to the text diagrams maps and plans some folding. Original red cloth title gilt to the spines and front boards. The whole group has evidently been string-tied with 1907 on the bottom and 1912 on the top in fairly damp and dusty conditions and consequently the lower board of the first volume is somewhat damped with some damping through the last 10 or so leaves and the upper board of the last is slightly grubby and string-notched at the centre of the four edges however that said the overall condition both externally and internally is very good. hardcover

Matters that were to become particularly germane in the following years. First and only editions of these extremely uncommon reports "For Official Use Only" only 750 copies of the first and 450 of the second but just a single copy of the manoeuvres traced institutionally at the Australian Defence Force Academy. IWM has a copy of the 1906 report on manoeuvres and KCL Australian War Memorial and the Australian National Library that of 1912 with the ADFA holding copies of the '07-08 '11 and '13 reports; KCL Institute for Historical Research have copies of the 1905 Report on Changes. and AWM that for 1906. Largely the work of military attachés who were "directly and intimately involved in obtaining information about their host nations" Seligmann Spies in Uniform p219 these works contained careful observations from the yearly manoeuvres in most of the major European nations - those of Germany and Austro-Hungary in considerable detail - together with Japan Turkey and the USA and "a compendium of recent developments that had taken place in the thought equipment and training of the world's major land forces" p217. Material of this kind is rarely encountered and offers a professional view of the rapid military developments occurring on the eve of the First World War. 2 vols octavo. Illustrations to the text some half-tones. The first red morocco-grain cloth on stiff card boards title gilt to the spine and front board; the second red cloth-backed printed printed paper-covered boards title gilt to the spine. With folding photo plate tipped in photograph and map. 35 pp. 4to. dark blue cloth with cover stamped in gilt and white. Minor wear to heel and crown a few faint scratches to rear board. Interior fine. With large trifold photo reproduction: portrait of the men of Company "F". A silver print photograph is tipped in following the dedication page: a portrait by Pirie MacDonald "Photographer-of-Men" New York of Captain James Regan of the 30th Infantry with a facsimile signature beneath. The Company was in fact a Training Camp for "Businessmen" who wanted to experience the rigors and discipline of military training; most of them were older than the average soldier. Laid in and producing offset tanning to endpapers is a taget card from the Bay State School of Musketry Boston Small Bore Rifle Range. It is undated but the shooter hit the center of the target at least five times. unknown books
