‎Labor Film Service letters and publicity materials including playbill for "The Contrast‎

‎New York: Labor Film Service 1922. Seven letters on eight 8.5x11 inch sheets of LFS letterhead one signed by business manager Herman Ross and four signed by Field Director Joseph D. Cannon two subscription agreement slips unsigned and one sheet asking for a list of friends who may be interested in the subscription not filled out the mailing envelope with return address and 1 cent stamp. and finally a brochure/playbill for the company's first film "The Contrast" written by John W. Slayton directed by and starring Guy Hedlund illustrated with photos of cast and crew including Slayton the screenwriter all items very good with fold creases for mailing and mild handling. The Labor Film Service was one of the most important Progressive Left film organizations in the 1920s. Cannon was a union organizer and the Socialist candidate for governor of New York in 1920. Slayton the screenwriter of "The Contrast" was his close comrade and in 1910 ran on the Socialist party ticket for governor of Pennsylvania. He also led the 1909 McKees Rock Strike. The addressee L. Ellen Northrop was a scion of the Northrop Family in Elliottcottville NY who was corresponding with such Progressives as Eugene Debs and Emma Goldman. Her papers are at Cornell.<br/><br/>The LFS had two films under way at the time of these requests for investors and subscribers. The first was Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" which had been filmed in 1914 but unreleased. The release of the film was delayed awaiting new scenes starring George Nash. That film was eventually bought back by Sinclair and has since been lost. The first film to be produced and distributed by the LFS was Slayton's "The Contrast" directed by and starring D.W. Griffith protégé Guy Hedlund. It was Hedlund who brought the Service to the attention of J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI as he became concerned with certain statements in the literature and advertising for the company. The film's story sound like the strike lead by Slayton. A tough street kid from Little Italy "where the gang played a lawless game with no rules no standards no loyalties" goes to the University and "finds on the football field that there is something more than that something finer and more lasting." That would be in addition to the traumatic brain injury I guess. Oh it's this: "The team-spirit the loyalty to one another and to the coach and -- lastly -- to the school is a revelation to him a complete re-education." The author was a Chicago sportswriter during the 1920s and 1930s; he had written an earlier football-themed book "Grid Star" and later turned out an historical novel "Lee on the Levee." . Original printed wrappers except for no. 12 or without wrappers as issued. Very good to fine.</p> <p> First/First Separate Editions. Cannon professor and chair of the Department of Physiology at Harvard Medical School was one of the pre-eminent physiologists of the 20th century making fundamental contributions to our knowledge of digestion the autonomic nervous system homeostasis and stress response. Cannon was the first to use X rays to study the digestive system; his work laid the foundations of gastrointestinal radiology. "His pioneering research done with a series of collaborators examined the nature of swallowing gastric peristalsis the time of passage for different foodstuffs out of the stomach into the duodenum control of the pylorus and peristalsis of the small intestine" Dictionary of Scientific Biography. He spent most of the 1920s researching the autonomic nervous system the part of the nervous system responsible for controlling unconscious bodily functions such as the heartbeat. Cannon also introduced the case system into medical education at Harvard see no. 2 below.</p> <p> Three of the offprints in this collection bear presentation inscriptions from Cannon. Another offprint is from the library of Nobel Laureate Archibald V. Hill who was awarded a share of the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine for his researches on the production of heat and mechanical work in muscles. "In the fall of 1916 before the United States entered World War I the National Research Council named Cannon a member of a committee on traumatic shock. Later he joined the Harvard University Hospital Unit. On his way to France in May 1917 he stopped in London and arranged with Fletcher first secretary of the Medical Research Committee to join the group of physicians and surgeons of the British Expeditionary Forces who were dealing with shock cases at the Casualty Clearing Station at Béthune. . . . Initially Cannon and his associates in the field concentrated their therapeutic efforts on treating the acidosis that accompanies shock. Later they recognized that the acidosis was merely a secondary phenomenon the result of the inadequacy of tissue perfusion. In 1923 Cannon summarized his wartime experience in Traumatic Shock" Dictionary of Scientific Biography.</p> <p> Cannon presented this copy of Traumatic Shock to his commanding officer at Béthune Colonel Cuthbert Sidney Wallace consulting surgeon to the First Army British Expeditionary Force. Cannon noted in his preface that "We were serving under Colonel Cuthbert Wallace later Major-General Sir Cuthbert Wallace who was as eager as any of us to secure further knowledge of shock and who helped and encouraged us in our efforts" p. ix. </p> .
