Over the bookplate in contemporary hand: "G.F. Francus de Frankenau Med.D. & P.P./ Hafni 1709". First edition of what is perhaps the main work on artillery from the 17th Century by one of the most highly regarded experts on artillery the military scientist Pietro Sardi 1559 - 16.

The important "l'Artiglieria" which contains detailed descriptions of land- and navel-artillery cannon and gun barrel production saltpeter and gunpowder ballistics etc. etc.
constitutes Sardi's most important work and it occupies an absolute central place within military science of the 17th century.

In the 17th century military scientists were not generally aware of the exact qualities and abilities of saltpeter e.g. that it became finer and purer each time it was boiled. Pietro Sardi was one of the leading scientists in the field of gunpowder and saltpeter at the time and it is in his "L'Artiglieria" that his important theories on saltpeter are developed. He claimed that all the vigour of gunpowder depended on the quantity and quality of the saltpeter in it and as such his early theories on this subject became highly influential.
Parts of Sardi's work was translated into English as early as 1670 namely those on saltpeter and gunpowder Book III chapters 40 to 54 in "Legends no Histories" by Henry Stubbe London 1670 - see Cockle no. 688 the note. "We know from Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli the author of the best treatise on the seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century Ottoman military that Sardi's book was available for the Ottoman authorities in translation and that they did use it. It is also evident from the account books of the Ottoman saltpeter works that the Ottomans refined saltpeter several times." Gbor goston "Guns for the Sultan".

From the library of the Danish King Christian V with his book-plate and later of Frankenau who was professor in medicine and successor to Holger Jacobus. He was a member of the Academy Leopoldina under the name of Philaretus. His father was physician-in-ordinary to King Chr. V. When it was handed over to the Frankenau-family cannot be decided.

Cocle: 688; Gerrare A Bibliography of Guns and Shooting: 121; Graesse VI:271; Rumpf: 1105. hardcover
