8vo., First Edition, First Issue, with a lithographed frontispiece finely coloured by hand (original tissue guard present) and 2 lithographed plates finely coloured by hand (original tissue guards present), some mild age-staining to title and last few leaves, contemporary inscription on frontispiece recto; original red cloth, upper board with blind frame border enclosing title in gilt, gilt edges, neatly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, new yellow endpapers to style, boards mildly age-stained else a very good, firm copy. With a small quanitity of relevant cuttings loosely inserted. The second dedicated history of the regiment, following the anonymous account of 1828. The plates comprise one of colours and two of uniform (1713 and 1866). Carter was Cannon's assistant in the compilation of the latter's well-known 'Historical Records' series. At Cannon's retirement Carter was considered as editor but the Treasury elected to discontinue the series and Carter therefore published this work independently. Unsold copies were reissued in 1883 with an additional eight pages titled 'Conclusion of the Historical Record' and 24 coloured plates of uniform by Simkin. In this Second Issue the plate of 1713 is often missing. Very scarce. Sutcliffe, p.167; White, p.79.

Cartwright John 1740 - 1824 political reformer and agitator which earned him the title of the ' Father of Reform.' A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO [MAJOR-]GENERAL SIR GEORGE JEFFREYS WITH THE FORMER'S SIGNED HOLOGRAPH INSCRIPTION ON HALF-TITLE. Major-General Sir George Jeffreys (1878-1960) was commissioned in the Grenadier Guards in 1897. He served at the Nile, in the Second Boer War and extensively throughout WWI. Mentioned in despatches several times, he commanded 2Bn in 1915, subsequently 58th Brigade, 57th Brigade, and finally 1st (Guards) Brigade in 1916. In 1917 he was appointed GOC 19th Division. Post-war he served as GOC Light Division British Army of the Rhine and as GOCiC of Southern Command in India before his retirement in 1938. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Jeffreys in 1952. His association with the present work stems from his position as Deputy Lieutenant of the county of Hampshire, Chairman of the Hampshire Territorial Army Association and a decade or so as MP for Petersfield. Includes a history of the Civil Service Rifle Volunteers; then 1st, 2nd and 3rd Battalions Civil Service Rifles during WWI. In 1921 the 1/15th was reconstituted as 15th Battalion London Regiment (POW Own Civil Service Rifles); in 1923 15th Battalion was amalgamated with 16th Battalion. Scarce in this condition. 6 Civil War Letters written and related to William Sebolt Sergeant Company H. 43rd Regiment New York
Various 1874. Letter. Good. 6 manuscript letters 4 of which were written by William Sebolt Sergeant Company H. 43rd Regiment New York Volunteers between November 20th 1861 and March 30th 1862. The 5th letter is written by "Leut Wadsworth A Levidson Surg US Vols in Charge". The 6th letter dated September 24 1874 is written and signed by R. R. R.last name not legible and counter signed by J. H. Baker Commissioner of Pensions. The personal letters by Sebolt are written on patriotic stationary with a closed tear to one letter and a spit to another letter. Sebolt's letters are difficult to decipher and have several misspelled words. The first letter written on 8" x 10" paper 1 page long is dated November 20 and addressed to his friend "Mister Sullivan Smith". Sebolt discusses a general review of the troops - "Thar was eighty thousan troops thar we had a bulley time". The second letter written on 8" x 10" paper 1 page long is dated November 26 1861 and addressed "Dear Wife." The contents are generally about health and weather. The third letter written on 8" x 10" paper 2 pages long is dated December 10 1861 and also addressed to his wife. Sebolt is glad to have heard from her and tells his wife about the weather and living in tents. The last letter written by Sebolt written on 8" x 10" paper and 2 pages long is dated March 30 1862. The letter is addressed to his wife and it appears Sebolt is trying to get home. The fifth letter written on a single sheet one sided 8" x 10" paper is signed by the Surgeon in charge and has given the command to release Sebolt from duty to a disability. This letter is split into two section with no missing text. The last letter in this group came from the "United States of America Department of the Interior Minor Children's Pensions Pension Bureau. " The letter is two pages long and starts with the statement - "it is hereby certified that in conformity with the laws of the United States the minor children herein named of William Sebolt who was a Sergt Co H 43rd Regt.are entitles while living under the age of sixteen years to a pension at the rate of eight dollars commencing on the eleventh day of December 1865.They are each also entitled to two dollars a month additional commencing sixteen Henry M 25 July 1866. William Sebolt or Seybolt was born in Otsego County and enlisted in the 43rd N.Y. Regiment August 12 1861. He died in April 1863 most likely from a disability he received during the War. The 43rd Regiment was in the Army of the Potomac and was in most of the major battles including Antietam Gettysburg and Appomattox. From New York State Military Museum: SEYBOLT WILLIAM.-Age 30 years. Enlisted August t 12 1861 at Cooperstown to serve three years; mustered in as corporal Co. K August t 30 1861; promoted sergeant January or February 1862; transferred to Co. A July 181862; returned to ranks by consolidation July 18 1862; discharged for disability October 211862 at Carver Hospital Washington D . 0 as of Co. K ; also borne as William Sebolt. S. unknown
