Red cloth covered boards illustrated with a green flag and yellow St. Andrew Cross - the 'Customs Jack' - the distinctive emblem required to mark Chinese Customs Cruisers and floating property designed by Horatio Nelson Jack - the grand-uncle of the author. xiii 241pp. A beautiful copy in the original dust wrapper that has unfortunately been taped on most of the edges but has done its duty in protecting the book in an almost pristine state. Loosely inserted is a complimentary slip from the publisher presumably to accompany the book and a newspaper clipping. There is also a typed letter signed by the author in its original envelope. The letter was sent to the wife of Group Captain Gordon Dunlop at the Canadian Legation in Stockholm in 1953. His signature is on the front free endpaper of the book dated 1953. In the letter there are reminiscences of Arthur Lay's own time in Stockholm where he mentions seeing Josephine Baker at the Kina Theatre in 1932 and goes on to describe his enthusiasm for Lapland China Japan and Korea. Beirne Lay Jr. September 1 1909 - May 26 1982 was an American writer aviation writer Hollywood screenwriter and combat veteran of WWII with the U.S. Army Air Forces. He is known for his collaboration with Sy Bartlett in authoring Twelve O'Clock High and adapting it into a major film. Lay enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in July 1932 and in June 1933 he earned his pilot's wings and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Reserve at Kelly Field. He was assigned to the 20th Bombardment Squadron at Langley Field Virginia flying the Keystone B-6 and Curtiss B-2 Condor bombers. Lay began his writing career while still on active duty by submitting pieces on aviation published in The Sportsman Pilot Esquire The Saturday Evening Post Today and Harper's. Lay returned to active duty after the outbreak of World War II in 1939 as a flying instructor. The publication of I Wanted Wings brought Lay to the attention of the staff of Army Air Forces Col. Ira Eaker chief of the Air Corps Information Division. Eaker arranged his transfer to Headquarters USAAC in Washington DC in early 1940. There promoted to captain he worked as a speechwriter for General Henry H. Arnold Chief of the Army Air Corps. In January 1942 Eaker was made brigadier general and was deployed to England to create what would become the Eighth Air Force. Lay was made Eighth Air Force historian and film unit commander. Fascinating and well written account of how the Saturn V was designed and built and the men who designed and built it. Portions of this work were previously published serially under the title of Down in Flames Out by Underground. Beirne Lay Jr. September 1 1909 - May 26 1982 was an American author aviation writer Hollywood screenwriter and combat veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army Air Forces. He is best known for his collaboration with Sy Bartlett in authoring the novel Twelve O'Clock High and adapting it into a major film. In January 1942 General Eaker was deployed to England to create the Eighth Air Force. Lay was made part of Eaker's staff cadre as Eighth Air Force Historian and Film Unit commander. In the first half of 1943 he commanded Hollywood director William Wyler then a Major while Wyler and his team were in England making the promotional movie Memphis Belle. On February 28 1944 Lay was given command of the 487th Bombardment Group at Alamogordo New Mexico. The 487th Bombardment Group was a heavy bomber unit of the Eighth Air Force based at Lavenham Suffolk from August 1944 until the end of the war in Europe. The group entered combat in May 1944 operating the B-24 Liberator against targets in France. Before the D-Day landings it attacked German airfields while during the invasion it attacked German coastal defenses and transport links. During July the group attacked German positions around Caen during the British attacks while in August it flew missions to support the attack on Brest. In August the group converted to the B-17 Flying Fortress and began to take part in the strategic bombing campaign attacking targets in Germany from then until March 1945. It also took part in Operation Market Garden supporting the group troops during the Battle of the Bulge and again during the crossing of the Rhine in March 1945. Harper and Brothers hardcover
