Columbus OH. Paperback. Very good. Broadsheet newspaper 4pp. "A Prison Gate May Be the Door to Opportunity." Small area of abraided loss at the lower right quadrant of the first page where it was once folded otherwise Very Good with mild soil and edgewear. Includes inmate articles and editorials including "What Will the Aftermath Really Be" foreshadowing U.S. official involvement in World War II an article about a visit fto the Penitentiary from Life Magazine which the author notes would not have happened under Hitler and a consideration of the Selective Service Program criteria barring convicts. Local interest includes a population report on deaths transfers releases and new inmates. The entire last page is dedicated to the fifth installment of "The Official '41 Softball Rules" with further rules promised the following week. The paper was edited by Henry J. Nitzsche who was serving a life sentence for murder at the time of publication. <br/><br/> paperback

A process-printed form 140 × 210 mm folded in half down the centre with 'Identification Cards for Ex-Prisoners of War' on the front panel and 'Indorsements' sic on the rear; Private Bailey's details are in pencil the prison place and date are stamped in red ink. The poor-quality paper is discoloured and creased where folded with several closed tears along or near the creases; a decent copy of a fragile and ephemeral item. unknown

[Prisoner of War]. DALTON, VX37705 Warrant Officer Class 2 Royce John
Six snapshots sent by Beryl Dalton his wife to VX37705 WO2 Royce John Dalton 2/24th Infantry Battalion in 1943 and 1944 while he was a prisoner of war in Italy and Germany
Six gelatin silver photographs five approximately 90 × 60 mm one 65 × 45 mm with the recipient's name prison address and a lengthy message from Mrs Beryl Dalton in ink on the verso of each one; in excellent condition with a 'Stalag VIIIA . Geprüft checked' inkstamp on each verso. Four photographs were sent to Italy and two to Germany. Judging by the dates on the messages between 23 January 1943 and 25 May 1944 and the addresses of the prisons only one snapshot was sent at a time possibly no more were permitted. In Italy 'Australians who were not officers were held in Campo 57 at Gruppignano near Udine in north-east Italy. The camp was commanded by Colonel Vittorio Calcaterra described by one prisoner as "a sadist and a beast and an accessory to murder"' Australian War Memorial. This is where WO2 Dalton was held. After Italy surrendered in September 1943 he was taken to Stalag VIIIA in Görlitz Germany. His capture probably occurred during the Second Battle of El Alamein in October 1942. Each snapshot features Royce John Dalton's young son John Royce Dalton who appears to have been born after his father left for the Middle East in November 1940. One poignant message reads 'Dear Royce This is our son John Royce isn't he grand .'. Others contain similar sentiments such as 'This is our son taken on his big engine on 20.12.43 which we gave him for Xmas'; and 'Mother & Pop idolize John but I don't let them spoil him. John's a happy child .'. 6 items. unknown

Cookham: The Authors 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Cookham The Authors 1946. Oblong quarto 107 pages with numerous illustrations. Grey cloth lettered in red on the front cover; cloth a little unevenly sunned and lightly foxed; foot of the spine lightly bumped throughout; a very good copy. The two-page introduction by the authors dated 'Cookham 1946' outlines the chequered history of the book not least the difficulties in getting it printed on their return from captivity. We 'spent two months searching a somewhat changed England for a publisher with enough good paper for the Book. Having discovered one we found that the printing trade was so short of man-power particularly block-makers and book-binders that our book had to take its turn in a long queue and that our original estimate of the time required to produce it was far too optimistic. We therefore apologise for the long delay and hope that you will receive your copy with as much pleasure as we see the last of it. We should like to take this opportunity of apologising to the many subscribers who sent messages of goodwill for not replying to them'. <p>An online search brought up further interesting information: all other copies we found for sale were bound in blue cloth with red lettering; one of them was still in its original packaging from the printer P.J. Press 34 Fort Road Middlesex; and a facsimile edition was published in 2005 variously signed by one or more former prisoners of war. The Authors hardcover

Pictorial wrappers lightly rubbed and marked; a very good copy. A self-published compilation of first-hand accounts of the Sandakan Death Marches in Borneo during the Second World War. Of some 2500 Allied prisoners only six survived. The contents are 'Death March from Sandakan' by J.R. Braithwaite; 'A Report on the Borneo Death Marches' by Lieutenant Colonel H.W.S. Jackson; 'The Witness of One of the Six Survivors' by Keith Botterill; and 'B. Force to Borneo' by Bill Young who also contributed the illustrations and verse. The first three contributions seem to have been recorded soon after the events they describe. <p>Bill Young appears to have produced several versions of this work and to have printed them on a home printer. Large quarto five issues with each one comprising 16 pages with numerous illustrations from photographs of Australian prisoners of war. Newsprint tanned and a little brittle with minor marginal blemishes; two staples later put through the inner margins with the last two numbers stapled together with the last leaf of the last issue bound in at the end of the second-last one; overall in decent condition. While the general tone of these very informative newsletters is upbeat there is a distinct air of anxiety with published letters from POWs some four to five months behind current events. The 'Enquiries' page containing numerous small personal classified requests for information still hits hard: 'Any repatriated or rescued prisoner of war or any other person who may know anything regarding undermentioned prisoners of war is kindly requested to communicate with the relative enquiring'. 5 items. Prize Ships; Royal Navy: Admiralty; Napoleonic War. Manuscript Letter from Edmund Hurry & Co to the London marine Charles Cox offering to ‘take charge of the disposal of the Ships and their Cargoes’ in Gosport.
‘Gosport May 30th 1803.’. An interesting piece of Royal Navy and Napoleonic War ephemera casting light on the implementation of Admiralty Prize Law. See the reference to the writer of this letter in the 1926 ‘Memorials of the family of Hurry of Great Yarmouth Norfolk and of America Australia and South Africa’: ‘Edmund Cobb Hurry born at Great Yarmouth in 1762 admitted a freeman by birthright 23rd of August 1782. He settled as a merchant and banker at Gosport where he married a Miss Liddell. Edmund Cobb Hurry died at Clifton in 1808.’ The recipients Cox and Co army and marine agents were located at 44 Hatton Garden London. 1p 4to. In good condition lightly aged. Reads: ‘Sir / Having learnt that you are one of the principal Agents for the Captain and Officers of His Majesty’s Navy and as in the Event of their sending in Prizes to this Port you must necessarily have some Person to take charge of the disposal of the Ships and their Cargoes we beg leave to acquaint you that we are established in that Business and if you are not already engaged shall be extremely happy in receiving your Commands. Autograph Letter Signed 1861 - 11th West Virginia on War for the Union Stationary
Jackson County WV 1861. 8x5" 4pp bifolium on illustrated patriotic stationary manuscript letter in pencil and ink on two separate dates. Transmittal folds a few light stains but very legible and clean. <br /> <br /> Early Civil War letter from an S.A. Bartlett of Company K. 11th Regiment West Virginia describing life in Camp Curtis and early movements of railroad duty. Bartlett writes to his brother to describe the weather and camp life while inquiring as to his receipt of registers and photos previously sent by Bartlett. The two dates are December 7th and 9th of 1861 with the second date describing the movement from camp to a location called "burnt bridge" 25 miles below Sulpher sic Spring on the railroad:<br /> <br /> ". this bridge was burnt by the secsesh. once and it was garded by MO boys and I gess they was more scart than hurt but I am glad that we hav moved. We hav got a very pleasant plase hear it is on a hill about 200 feet above the water. Their was not onley 2 Companeys taken from the Rigement - they was Co. C. and Co. K. the rest is left at Sulp Springs. I dont think their is enny more danger hear than their was at Camp Curtis."<br /> <br /> <br /> Bartlett directs further correspondence to St. Louis "as long as we are on the move" reflecting the fluidity of early deployments. A vivid glimpse of the improvised unsettled nature of Union operations during the opening phase of the war. <br /> <br /> <br /> . unknown

Blue publisher’s cloth gilt lettering front cover & spine minor shelfwear slight rubbing w/ d.j. minor creasing edgewear slight chipping head of spine scuffing still VG/VG copy signed by Hawthorne Daniel and mounted signature of James H. Kyner on ffep. First edition signed of this memoir awarded the Gold Medal of the Oregon Trail Memorial Association in 1936 recounting the life of the main contractor for the Oregon Short Line Railroad through Idaho and other Western railroads during the Gilded Age. He details the railroad camps with photos through Wyoming Colorado Nebraska and Idaho fighting off stagecoach bandits and coping with the Herculean projects to complete the lines. Kyner 1846-1936 enlisted in the Civil War with the 45th Ohio Regiment at the age of 15 fought under General Tecumseh Sherman lost his right leg below the knee at the Battle of Shiloh and would later homestead in Nebraska near Norfolk and later served as legislator in Omaha before beginning his railroad building career.
