1776 Letter from One Englishman to Another Asking for Financial Advice Given the “Fluctuating situation of Publick affairsâ€
Knaresborough England 1776. Single three page letter measuring 6 ¼ x 7 ¾ inches. Normal wear; Near Fine. A letter from Nathaniel Sharpe in Knaresborough to Edmund Green a merchant in London addressed to Green at the Jamaica Coffee House. This café the first of its kind in London was established in the mid-17th century; in 17th and 18th century Britain coffee houses were popular meeting places particularly for conducting business. Sharpe writes to Green:<br /> <br /> “Your Esteem’d favour of the 22d is before me and the picture you have drawn of the situation of publick affairs are truly very alarming and have no doubt but the Representation is a very just and real one. . But to the following Fact place yourself in my situation and give me your Candid opinion Wether I am safe in letting £2200 lay any longer or whether I ought to call it in and place it out on a Security in this Country.â€<br /> <br /> He describes his investments and states that:<br /> <br /> “I have not one shilling in Trade since 1760 and in Decemr. 1762 Retir’d to this place and found myself in possession of a Happiness that I could ill brook to part with. And which I would wish to preserve. Should this sum be in no danger I can live as usual.â€<br /> <br /> The American Revolutionary War had a significant impact on the British economy; at the time Sharpe was writing although the conflict had been ongoing for some time the war itself was in its early days and uncertainty was high.<br /> <br /> Other than asking for financial advice Sharpe tells Green that Green’s “Brother Tommy had . taken a Cup of Liquor rather too freely and had been drawn into Cards†alarming their mother who had requested that Sharpe inform Green about the event; asks Green to visit her; and sends his good wishes to a mutual friend. unknown

Green silk endpapers all edges gilt. Previous ownership bookplates to front endpapers. Errata on verso of title page. Solid text block worn corners foxing to edges of leaves a very good example. Complete with a detailed frontispiece portrait of King George III tipped-in frontispiece portrait of Earl Howe and two large fold-out plates of battle plans bound in at rear. Binding by L. Richard The First Earl Howe 1726-1799 was a Royal Navy officer who served Great Britain in the Seven Years' War the American Revolutionary War and the French Revolutionary War. This work describes Howe's success in commanding the British Fleet during the "Glorious First of June" naval battles in 1794 with the British defeat of the French fleet of Villaret de Joyeuse in the North Atlantic. <p>Entire issue small folio 8 1/2" x 11 1/2" removed disbound 473-480 pp. slight offsetting A few small holes affecting a some letters holes look like a slight tear in right column some aging and browning; otherwise about very good. At the Battle of Camden in South Carolina the Americans suffered a major defeat at the hands of the British. The British General Cornwallis defeated the American General Gates on August 16 1780 causing the American to lose 2000 men in the process. Despite its publication in a London newspaper this is an American account of the Battle of Camden which includes a letter from General Gates. history american-revolution/battle-of-camden website.</p>

Autograph Letter from Stephen Lush to Jellis Jacob Fonda.
4 page letter sheet I pp of text 13 lines of test signed and mailed remnant of wax seal labeled duplicate docketed on last page. Legible probably a second copy made for legal purposes signed by author some wear at folds and some staining second sheet split and cracked a bit but text page in very good condition. Interesting letter that appears to have the wrong date on the front page. What appears to be January 20 1706 should read January 20 1786 according to the docketted date on the last page. The letter is written by Stephen Lush 1753-1825 to Jellis Jacob Fonda 1751-1839. It relates to taxes on land in New York owned jointly by Lush and Fonda. John Lansing an attorney and former delegate to the Constitutional Convention seems to have resquested the payment of one shilling per acre on the 40000 of acres they own jointly. Provides some interesting content on land taxation for the period. Lush practiced law in Albany until the War for Independence; he was commissioned a captain and saw action in New York City but was captured by the British. Major Fonda was considered one of the first patriots of Schenectady and after Lexington he formed a company of Minutemen. He fought in the Campaign against Burgoyne and at the Battle of Bemis Heights. Fonda organization website. ny education government website.

Broadside A Bill to amend the acts of July eighteen hundred and thirty-six and eighteen hundred and thirty-eight allowing pensions to certain widows
Washington D.C. 1842. First edition. Very good closed tear at fold. 1 p. 13.5 x 8 inches. The two sections allowed widows who remarried to claim benefits as well as those whose husbands died since the 1838 bill was passed. A contemporary note on the verso states that a similar bill was passed at the 26th Congress and "if it it can ever be called up it will pass again" as it did that year on August 23 1842.<br /> <br /> John Taliaferro 1768-1853 was a member of Congress from Virginia who served numerous non- consecutive terms between 1801 and 1843 during which time he was elected as a Democratic Republican a Crawford Republican an Adams as an Anti-Jacksonian candidate and as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth-twenty seventh Congresses March 4 1835-March 3 1843 during which time he was chairman Committee on Revolutionary Pensions. A strong Anti-Jacksonian he was author of the broadside: "Supplemental account of some of the bloody deeds of General Jackson being a supplement to the "Coffin handbill." <br /> <br /> References: Lyon Gardiner Tyler 1915. <p>One page folio sheet 15" x 9" docketed about ten short lines of text. Some aging and browning folds; otherwise very good or better. This is a manuscript document for payment to the Wethersfield Connecticut Selectmen for payment for clothing and the transportation of clothing and some other items to the Continental Army dated "March 5th 1781." The amount of the request is two hundred ninety-two pounds eighteen shillings and five pence. The document is signed by George Stanley and is docketed on the reverse as paid signed by a S. Hubbard. Provenance: The Calvin Otto Collection. </p>

Revolutionary War Depreciation of Pay Document.
<p>A one page partially printed and manuscript folio sheet 13" x 8 1/4" considerable manuscript text on the reverse. Some browning and aging a few tiny chips or holes at folds top edge with a couple of nicks; otherwise very good. This document basically transfers pay owed to William Champlin of Rensselaer County New York who served under Colonel Robert Elliot to a Samuel Dorrance of Providence Rhode Island. Champlin appears to appoint Dorrance as his substitute to collect the balance of fourteen pounds fifteen shillings and five pence. The document is signed by various others. There is a fair amount of manuscript text on the reverse which appears to transfer the debt to at least one additional person. Provenance: The Calvin Otto Collection. </p>

Revolutionary War period writ in which James Smyth demands 480 pounds from William Bath pilot in Charles-town. Signed by William Drayton Chief Justice at Charleston
1776. Ephemera. Very good condition. A Revolutionary War period writ issued in Charleston South Carolina signed by William Henry Drayton. A large sum of money is demanded of William Bath pilot of Charleston by James Smyth. Bath is not present in Charleston and somehow the writ is transferred to Sarah Johnson who it is inferred is in possession of Bath's property including a Negro girl named Lucey. The sheriff Thomas Gimbell executes the writ on Sarah Johnson. <br /> <br /> The writ is executed at a transition time for the American colonies from the Colonial to the Revolutionary War period. The form was issued on September 17 1776 just 2 months after the Declaration of Independence. As such all the pre-printed areas that refer to the "Province" South Carolina are crossed out and "State" is inserted. "Year of our Reign is also crossed through. The money demanded is in pounds. Included in the writ is reference to a "negro named Lucey with one Sarah Jones in Union Street" with a long statement by Thomas Gimball Sheriff of Charles Town signed. The writ was served Oct. 17 1776 and filed Jan 10th 1777. The witness is the Hble. William Henry Drayton Chief Justice at Charleston. <br /> <br /> It is not completely clear which William Drayton has signed the writ. It is most likely that of William Henry Drayton Sept. 1742-September 3 1779. He was the son of John Drayton and Charlotta Bull daughter of the colony's Governor William Bull. He was educated in England at Westminster School and Oxford before returning home in 1764. He served as a delegate for South Carolina to the Continental Congress in 1778 and 1779. He died of typhus in Philadelphia while in office. His signature "Wm Hy Drayton" is on the left side of the writ partially obscured by the duty stamp. <br /> <br /> However his cousin was William Drayton Sr. 1732-1790. Also born in Ashley River South Carolina he was the son of Thomas Drayton III & Elizabeth. Drayton was educated in the Middle Temple in London England in 1754. He read law to enter the South Carolina Bar in 1756 and was thereafter a Justice of the peace for Berkeley County South Carolina until 1763. From 1763 to 1780 he was Chief justice for the Province of East Florida. In 1789 he was a judge of the South Carolina Admiralty Court and an associate judge of the South Carolina Supreme Court appointed by George Washington. <br /> <br /> William Bath is included on the Grand Jury List for the "District of George Town" Parish of Prince George in 1778 & 1780. There is a marriage record for a William Bath to Elizabeth Baker widow on 2 Nov 1771. South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research Vol 10 #3. Sarah Jones is possibly the widow of Thomas Jones Sr whose will was probated in 1773. In the 1790 census she is listed as the head of the household with 2 boys under 16 and 2 women and no slaves. In 1800 just the mother and daughter comprise the household. In 1806 & 1809 she is listed as a seamstress in two different Charleston directories Negrin's directory and Almanac for the year 1806 and Directory for the District of Charleston 1809 by Richard Hrabowski. There are a series of James Smith's spelled Smyth in the writ. James Smyth is listed in Charleston in 1758; in 1780 he is on the Petit Jury List for the "District of Charles Town Johns Island Colleton County"; in the 1790 Federal Census he is in the parish of St. Phillips and St. Michaels in Charleston with no slaves. <br /> <br /> Alas there is no further reference to "Lucey". <br /> <br /> The heading is trimmed off the top and it appears that this area referred to the King and was hence trimmed off. Written carefully below is "The State of South Carolina to all Singular the Sheriffs of the State aforesaid Greeting. Laid paper 13 x 6 3/4" printed on one side with manuscript additions docketed manuscript notations on the verso. Uniformly tanned. unknown

TO THE MEN OF RHODE-ISLAND! / Who love HONESTY and TRUTH
Providence Rhode Island: N.p. 1847. Broadside measuring 18 x 13 inches folded with damage to right margin somewhat stained with a few very small wormholes. Excellent. TO THE MEN OF RHODE-ISLAND! Who love HONESTY and TRUTH written in 1847 by John W. Richmond deals with the repayment of Revolutionary War debt. In 1846 lawyer Wilkins Updike published a book titled History of the Alleged State Debt of Rhode-Island in which he alleged that prominent men of Rhode Island were making essentially fraudulent claims that Rhode Island still owed them money for Revolutionary War loans. The basis of the dispute which was widespread in the postwar US was whether the debts should be repaid in specie or paper money; in 1786 Rhode Island legislators mandated creditors to accept paper money as payment. On Updike’s account the “dead debt was afterwards resuscitated by political legislation†prompting those with financial means to purchase the debt “for comparatively nothing and have and are now endeavouring to defraud the honest yeomanry out of it†by having it repaid in specie.1 In turn Richmond’s broadside accuses Wilkins of corrupt behavior for both denigrating the reputation of these purchasers and for neglecting to mention several settlements for payment of interest on these debts by the government of Rhode Island indicating that the debts were in fact owed and not fraudulent. Richmond who saw Wilkins as calling for a repudiation of the state’s debt calls him a “man so far degraded in his moral sensibilities†“self-disgraced†with his own “evident depravity†“pitiful†“miserable†and “unprincipled†a man “who knows no true open manly and honest course but vainly hopes by his corrupt acts to ride into political power.†<br /> <br /> The severity of this issue for Richmond led him to leave the state in disgust; his headstone in New London Connecticut tells that he was “unwilling that the remains of himself and family should be disgraced by being a part of the common earth of a Repudiating State.†We find eleven copies of TO THE MEN in OCLC.<br /> <br /> 1 Wilkins Updike History of the Alleged State Debt of Rhode-Island N.p. 4. <p>Worcester: S. Gamidge and W. Pendrill 1756. Single sided engraved broadside approximately 265mm x 380mm engraving 335 x 450 Frame. Lightly soiled surface abrasion towards head on the left hand side but not affecting image several small worm holes but again not affecting image or text. Vignette to head showing Penderel holding a billhook in the foreground with the king on a horse in disguise to the background. Penderel's epitaph is recorded towards the bottom of the engraving with an added note that George II had ordered that his monument be 'cleaned up & beautified in the year 1739'. Engraved broadside celebrating the life of Richard Penderel Richard Pendrill of Hobball Grange Shropshire who with his four brothers saved the life of Charles II after the battle of Worcester hiding him from Cromwell's soldiers. After the Restoration both he and his brothers were rewarded with a pension and he was known as 'Trusty Dick' at Court. He died in 1671 while visiting London and his surviving brothers were later granted exemption from prosecutions for recusancy after the 'Popish Plot'.
