LEE Laurie Laurence Edward Alan 1914 1997
Autobiographical Trilogy comprising Cider with Rosie; with As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning Signed and A Moment of War
London: Hogarth Press / André Deutsch / Viking through 1991 1959. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Three volumes complete two first impressions and one signed second. 8vo: 280; 252; 178pp. Cider with Rosie Hogarth Press 1959: First Issue suppressed of the first and most famous book in the trilogy with mention of the piano-works fires on p. 272. Publisher's forest-green cloth spine stamped in gilt with drawings by John Ward; illustrated dust jacket priced 18s. Very lightly age-toned else Fine. As I Walked Out André Deutsch 1969: Second Impression signed by Lee on title page. Publisher's tangerine cloth spine stamped in gilt with drawings by Leonard Rosoman; price-clipped illustrated dust jacket. Square tight and apparently unread an exemplary example. Moment of War Viking 1991: Publisher's black cloth spine stamped in silver with unattributed drawings; price-clipped illustrated dust jacket repriced $24.99 top of front flap for the Canadian market. Very lightly faded spine panel on jacket else Fine virtually As New. In 1957 the Hogarth Press offered Lee £500 "to give up all other work and get on with" Cider with Rosie which had been commissioned ten years earlier. The book is Lee's account of his childhood as a "scab-kneed schoolboy" in the Costwold village of Slad in the period after the First World War and chronicles the traditional mainly feudal village life that disappeared with the advent of the motor car. The identity of Rosie was revealed years later to be Lee's distant cousin Rosalind Buckland. Cider with Rosie sold six million copies worldwide allowing Lee to buy Rose Cottage "in the heart of the village six stumbling paces from the pub." "As I Walked out one Midsummer Morning the trilogy's second installment was published ten years later. Disastrously since his diaries were the basis of his work Lee's irreplaceable volumes for 1935-37 were stolen while he was in Spain with the BBC in 1969. Their loss made the writing of the trilogy's final work more difficult. . . . Ironically the book was ultimately sharper and more moving because it was less reliant on detail. . . . A Moment of War 1991 his memoir of the period of the Spanish Civil War describes his being three times arrested imprisoned and on the brink of being shot as a fascist spy and graphically describes the disorganization amateurism and squalid living conditions endured by republican recruits." ODNB N. B. With few exceptions always identified we only stock books in exceptional condition with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Hogarth Press / André Deutsch / Viking [through 1991] hardcover
