Selon la thèse de l’auteur, Charles de Gaulle fut le plus grand des Français, et il semblera peut-être encore plus grand aux générations futures. Mais il est en même temps un personnage controversé. De Gaulle a sauvé deux fois la France. C’est surtout grâce à son action en 1940 et à la maîtrise dont il a fait preuve par la suite pour défendre les intérêts d’un pays qui se trouvait « au fond de l’abîme », que fut rendu à la France en 1945 son statut de grande puissance. De retour sur la scène politique en 1958, de Gaulle écarta le danger de guerre civile, libéra la France de son empire devenu un handicap et en rit la force maîtresse de la Communauté européenne. Il a toujours dû faire face à beaucoup d’opposants en France comme à l’étranger. Si ses dernières années furent assombries par l’échec et la déception, il réussit sa sortie laissant en place l’essentiel de sa grande œuvre. Bien des idées de De Gaulle rayonnent encore aujourd’hui. La France adhère aux lignes directrices de sa politique étrangère et de défense, et la constitution qu’il a léguée n’a pas été modifiée. Encore plus important pour l’avenir du monde, peut-être, demeure son appel pour que cesse « la politique des blocs » et la domination des deux super-puissances.‎

An unusual and interesting small ephemera archive of 8 Gypsy Rose Lee items only one dated 1941 specifically 3 letters; 1 autographed letter signed ALS 1 typed letter signed TLS and 1 autographed note signed ANS ; 3 photographs and 2 B&w printed images. 3 Letters; 1 ALS 1 TLS and 1 ANS: • Autograph letter on personal embossed letterhead signed "Gypsy Rose Lee" two pages folded size 5-3/8 x 6-7/8 inches conjoining leaves New York n.d. but address is 81 Irving Place dating this in the early 1930's. "Dear Mr. Sobel: Thanks a million for your notice- I'm so happy about everything and you really put a finishing touch on it all. I realized I had two strikes against me when I started- what with my strip teasing career and my lack of real talent- I'm really amazed by it all- Can't seem to believe it is all true. what they say about Gyppy. In 1957 the Hogarth Press offered Lee £500 "to give up all other work and get on with" Cider with Rosie which had been commissioned ten years earlier. The book is Lee's account of his childhood as a "scab-kneed schoolboy" in the Costwold village of Slad in the period after the First World War and chronicles the traditional mainly feudal village life that disappeared with the advent of the motor car. The identity of Rosie was revealed years later to be Lee's distant cousin Rosalind Buckland. Cider with Rosie sold six million copies worldwide allowing Lee to buy Rose Cottage "in the heart of the village six stumbling paces from the pub." "As I Walked out one Midsummer Morning the trilogy's second installment was published ten years later. Disastrously since his diaries were the basis of his work Lee's irreplaceable volumes for 1935-37 were stolen while he was in Spain with the BBC in 1969. ‎Par Robert Legrand (1912-2006), historien spécialiste de la Révolution française et en particulier de Gracchus Babeuf. — "Il m'arrive parfois, parlant du Comte de Saint-Simon, d'avoir pour réponse : « Oui, le duc, le célèbre auteur des Mémoires... ». Certes il est facile de confondre, par manque d’attention ou de connaissances. Et des personnages ayant le même patronyme, on les croit, parfois à tort, parents. J'ai donc commencé à noter des noms, fixer des prénoms et des dates, susceptibles de prêter à confusion. Je me suis vite aperçu que les homonymes se trouvaient assez nombreux dans la période si riche en événements de la fin de l’Ancien régime à la révolution de Juillet, et j'ai continué à chercher. J'ai ainsi découvert nombre de destinées intéressantes, ou curieuses, certaines mêmes exceptionnelles. Certains homonymes ont même été confondus : l’un arrêté pour l’autre, et tel général condamné à la place de son frère. Et que de destins tragiques, heureusement parfois sauvés par l’amour ! L'ouvrage a pris corps ainsi, le livre s'est fait au cours de mes lectures, finissant par rassembler près de 110 patronymes différents, rassemblés en 490 personnages dont la vie est ici plus ou moins longuement retracée. Avec tant de destinées retrouvées, et groupées, c'est le tableau d’une époque et d’une société en conflits, d'hommes et de femmes qui luttent pour la réussite, la gloire ou les honneurs. Jean Tulard écrit dans la préface : « ce livre sera consulté avec un intérêt évident mais aussi avec plaisir car l'auteur a su donner vie à ses portraits grâce aux bons mots. Être à la fois savant et agréable à lire, tel à été le souci de Robert Legrand ».
