‎Cet ouvrage est une traduction de l'ouvrage publié en 1957 aux Etats-Unis. Il retrace la courte vie du mathématicien Abel. Son enfance est décrite dans le cadre d'une Norvège rigoriste où la vie est très dure en ce début de XIXe siècle bouleversé par les guerres napoléoniennes. Boursier du gouvernement Abel se dirige lentement à travers l'Europe vers Paris où des désillusions causées par la négligence de Cauchy l'attendent. Le monde scientifique parisien y est décrit sans complaisances à l'aide de lettres d'Abel lui-même. Malgré l'appui constant du mathématicien allemand Crelle et de son journal le jeune mathématicien meurt en 1829 démuni mais en voie d'être reconnu comme mathématicien de génie. L'ouvrage contient de nombreux extraits de lettres écrites par Abel. Un chapitre est consacré aux avatars du manuscrit essentiel de ses travaux. Le livre est illustré de nombreuses reproductions et comporte en annexes une partie mathématique traitant des équations algébriques, des fonctions elliptiques et les travaux d'Abel sur ces sujets.‎

Elles sont conservées dans diverses phonothèques universitaires, privées et surtout à la Library of Congress. L'approche est à la fois linguistique (étude de la langue, du vocabulaire de ces chansons), sociologique et ethnologique. Trois catégories professionnelles sont concernées, les bûcherons, les cowboys, les chemineaux." L'ouvrage de Michel Oriano est aussi une riche anthologie bilingue des chants etudiés et, de « l'alphabet du bucheron » au cycle de John Henry, c'est tout l'envers du « capitalisme sauvage » américain qui se deploie : la vermine, la peine, l'alcool remplaçant le succès et le conte rose de l'ascension sociale à portée d'energie..." Fine. The text of this volume explores the life and accomplishments of Albert Maurice Bender 1866-1941 by a friend of long-standing. While Lewis remarks that "Not one of the facts here assembled is of the slightest importance to anyone" they do reveal a striking word image of Bender the man and reveal a very different time from that of the twenty-first century. The frontispiece is a reproduction of an etching of Bender by Max Pollak 1886-1970 a Czech-born American painter and printmaker one of whose specialties was portraiture; Pollack lived in San Francisco beginning in 1938. Also included is a humorous portrait of "Albert Bender and other benders" signed in the plate by Dan Sweeney 1888-1958 California book and hotel label illustrator that includes African-American train porters and attendants which also conveys an era that no longer exists.
