He won the 1967 U.S. National Book Award in Science Philosophy and Religion for "La Vida; A Puerto Rican Family in the Culture of Poverty." Oscar Lewis born Lefkowitz 1914 1970 from the library of Dr Wilfred C Bailey
Life in a Mexican Village: Tepoztlan Restudied
xxvii512 pages with maps charts tables diagrams plates bibliography and index. Small quarto 10 1/2" x 7" issued in black cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. From the library of Dr Wilfred C Bailey. 2d edition. Here is an almost unparalleled event in anthropological research. Seldom before have anthropologists had the funds or the time for restudy of the cultures they once examined. Sometimes indeed it has been impossible; sometimes unfortunately the area studied by one anthropologist has been considered out-of-bounds by all others. But here Oscar Lewis has taken a penetrating second look at Tepoztlan the Mexican village first studied over twenty years earlier by the distinguished anthropologist Robert Redfield - and with Redfield's aid and encouragement. This is the result. Twenty yeas had made a difference in Tepoztlan. Now there was a paved highway entering this Mexican village that matches to a remarkable degree many of the characteristics of Mexico as a whole. Now the people have cola drinks aspirin radios sewing machines phonographs pool rooms flashlights clocks steel plows and some labor-saving devices. Now more than twenty years after Redfield's original study the villagers have a greater desire to attend school to eat better to dress better and to spend more. At the same time Lewis found that these villagers are still guided by superstition and primitive beliefs; sorcery magic evil winds and spirits still dominate their thinking. But all the differences between the original study and this restudy cannot be attributed to the passage of time. Lewis brings to the investigation new anthropological research methods for example a whole chapter is devoted to an analysis of Rorschach tests given to selected citizens. Lewis and his researchers were able to spend more than twice the time that Redfield was able to spend in field study. And Lewis had the assistance of more Mexican personnel. As a result the differences in findings range from discrepancies in factual details to differences in the over-all view of Tepoztecan society and its people. Condition: Dr Wilfred C Bailey's signature with date 2/22/54 on front paste down corners bumped. Jacket price clipped 1/2" chipped at edges hinges and corners chipped. 1/4" loss to spine ends else a very good copy in a better than good jacket. University of Illinois Press hardcover

Fine. The text of this volume explores the life and accomplishments of Albert Maurice Bender 1866-1941 by a friend of long-standing. While Lewis remarks that "Not one of the facts here assembled is of the slightest importance to anyone" they do reveal a striking word image of Bender the man and reveal a very different time from that of the twenty-first century. The frontispiece is a reproduction of an etching of Bender by Max Pollak 1886-1970 a Czech-born American painter and printmaker one of whose specialties was portraiture; Pollak lived in San Francisco beginning in 1938. Also included is a humorous portrait of "Albert Bender and other benders" signed in the plate by Dan Sweeney 1888-1958 California book and hotel label illustrator that includes African-American train porters and attendants which also conveys an era that no longer exists. Do not expect to find a copy of this title in better condition. REFERENCE: Magee and Magee Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1940-1956 No. 349. The Grabhorn Press, hardcover books

Laid-in are an extra copy of "Albert Bender and other benders" by Dan Sweeny 2 autographed notes SIGNED from S. I. Wormser to Mark Altman dated 1942 on Wormser's letterheads the calling cards of Mr. William James Dawson and Mark Altman and a 4-page GPO publication about the establishment of the Library of Congress Trust Fund. The frontispiece is a reproduction of an etching of Bender by Max Pollak 1886-1970 a Czech-born American painter and printmaker one of whose specialties was portraiture; Pollack lived in San Francisco beginning in 1938. Also included is a humorous portrait of "Albert Bender and other benders" signed in the plate by Dan Sweeney 1888-1958 California book and hotel label illustrator that includes African-American train porters and attendants which also conveys an era that no longer exists. This copy in outstanding condition. REFERENCE: Magee and Magee Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1940-1956 No. 349. The Grabhorn Press, hardcover books
