Slemons - Monticello - Ark" executed on a 5.5" x 2.25" slip of paper most likely written during his tenure as a member of the United States House of Representatives. Fine condition.<br/><br/> American politician and secessionist who served as a member of the Arkansas State Convention in 1861. He entered the Confederate States Army in late 1861 and served as a Colonel of the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry under Major General Sterling Price. In the fall of 1864 while fighting in Kansas Slemons had his horse shot from under him and he and a large regiment were captured. For the remainder of the war he was held captive in several Union prisons.<br/><br/> unknown books‎

"Early in his career he was through the introduction of the late Sir William Jenner appointed to the Duke of Brabant afterwards Leopold II King of the Belgians and travelled with him in the East visiting India Ceylon and China. King Leopold whose physician he remained until that monarch's death appointed him a Chevalier of the Order of Leopold." He worked at a Children's hospital and gained a wide ranging respect for his personality and knowledge being well read and kind. Sir H. ‎This American artist is often remembered for his friendship with Carl Sandburg which resulted in his striking 1968 U.S. postage stamp; other stamps include his award-winning 1972 "Sidney Lanier" and the 4-stamp 1973 series "Rise of the Spirit of Independence." ANS 1p 8�" X 11" Pineville PA 1973 October 9. Addressed to Mr. Johnston. Near fine. Two horizontal mailing folds. Friendly "Thank you for your gratifying reaction and comment on my stamp designs." in Smith's handsome calligraphic hand. No doubt refers to his award-winning 4-stamp "Rise of the Spirit of Independence" stamps which had been released the previous month. Accompanied by a stunning 4pp heavy stock 8�" X 11" color leaflet issued in 1953. Near fine. Smith's 1978 centennial "Carl Sandburg" stamp which shows a left-facing Sandburg in profile was based on a charcoal portrait made much earlier showing a right-facing Sandburg published here for the first time in 1953 -- a full quarter century before its stamp appearance! The front cover of this glossy leaflet features this portrait which once open pages 2 and 3 shows on the lefthand side a manuscript fair copy of Sandburg's then-new poem "Names" in his distinctive script dated from Connemara Farm Flat Rock North Carolina 25 December 1952. The righthand side shows the same text beautifully typeset. Rear leaf page 4 indicates "First publication of CARL SANDBURG'S most recent poem" and "Some time ago we asked Mr. Sandburg for permission to print this poem as a keepsake for his seventy-fifth birthday party." Thus this booklet represents the true first appearance of this well-known poem which begins: "There is only one horse on the earth / and his name is All Horses. / There is only one bird in the air / and his name is All Wings. / There is only one fish in the sea / and his name is All fins." Though no publisher is cited on this bibliographically-challenged printed piece the publisher was perhaps Broadcast Music Inc. of New York -- whose president and founder Carl Haverlin was an old friend of Sandburg's and was instrumental in organizing the celebrations honoring his friend's 75th. Sandburg at that time was at the height of his fame and these fetes garnished much press coverage. It's not known how many of these booklets were produced but likely a modest number for private distribution to friends and colleagues. A superb letter and scarce printed keepsake. unknown‎

‎Boise ID: October 30 1967. 1967. Very good. - 42 words typed on an approximately 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide cream-colored sheet of the Langroise Clark & Sullivan Law Offices letterhead. Signed "Rob". There is some very light soiling to the letter. The top right corner is slightly creased & there is a light diagonal crease across the bottom left corner. Very good. <p>Smylie who left the post of Governor in January of 1967 writes to Halpern addressing him as "Sy" "I take great pleasure in scribbling across the picture not here present which is enclosed herewith."</p><p>Robert E. Smylie 1914-2004 was an American Republican politician and attorney from Idaho He began practicing law in Washington DC but left his practice in 1942 to join the U.S. Coast Guard as a lawyer. He was stationed in Philadelphia and the Philippines during World War II returning to private practice in 1946. In 1947 he became deputy attorney general of Idaho under Robert Ailshie and was promoted to attorney general on the sudden death of Ailshie later that year. After being elected to a full term in 1950 he ran successfully for governor in 1954 serving twelve years from January 1955 to January 1967.</p><p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.</p> Boise, ID: October 30, 1967.‎

‎"Dans ce gros volume, E. S. nous invite à le suivre dans une vaste tournée en Chine qui prend bien souvent les allures d'un pèlerinage. Cette tournée, en effet, est d'abord une tournée dans le temps, puisque E. S., tout en parcourant la Chine de 1960, ne résiste pas au plaisir d'évoquer chaque fois qu'il le peut celle des années 1935-1939, celle de l'époque où il se rendait à Bao'an pour y « découvrir » Mao Tsé-toung et l'y faire raconter sa vie à l'usage des Occidentaux (Red star over China). Mais c'est surtout, bien entendu, une tournée dans l'espace, et qui nous permet de visiter tour à tour les steppes de la Mongolie intérieure et les grands centres industriels du Nord-Est, Shangai et Wuhan, le Sichuan, le Yunnan, etc., tels qu'ils se présentaient au voyageur venu de l'Ouest au début de la deuxième année de la période de vaches maigres qu'eut à vivre la Chine de l'été 1959 à l'été 1962. On trouve de tout dans cet ouvrage excessivement touffu et finalement fort mal organisé, mais qui n'en demeure pas moins l'un des meilleurs dont on dispose sur la Chine d'aujourd'hui : des statistiques en abondance, généralement trop partielles ou trop officielles pour présenter beaucoup d'intérêt, mais parfois significatives, des anecdotes dont le sens de l'humour d'E. S. ne parvient qu'avec peine à masquer le vide absolu, d'autres au contraire qui sont des plus révélatrices, de laborieuses considérations sur les idiosyncrasies des Chinois et des Américains et des remarques très profondes sur les différents aspects de la politique intérieure et de la politique extérieure chinoise depuis 1955, etc. E. S. ne cache pas la sympathie que lui inspire la Chine de Mao, mais fait preuve, toutefois, d'un peu trop d'adresse dans la manière dont il embellit les aspects les plus justement contestés de la réalité chinoise d'aujourd'hui."
