‎Poultney Bigelow (1855-1954) est le fils de John Bigelow, qui fut successivement ambassadeur des États-Unis en France, dans les dernières années du règne de Napoléon III, et en Prusse, au moment du désastre de 1870 et de la création de l'Empire d'Allemagne. Il fut le compagnon de jeux et l'ami de Guillaume II, alors petit-fils du souverain. — "M. Bigelow est le fils de John G. Bigelow, ambassadeur des États-Unis en France sous Napoléon III, puis en Prusse en 1870 et pendant les années qui suivirent le traité de Francfort. Tout enfant, il fut conduit par le Dr Hinzpeter auprès de ses deux pupilles, les princes Guillaume et Henri, fils du prince impérial Frédéric et fut le compagnon de leurs jeux. Guillaume II devenu empereur n'a pas oublié son ancien camarade qui fut invité non seulement dans le cercle intime de la cour, mais encore à des manœuvres impériales de l'armée et de la flotte, ainsi qu'au voyage de l'empereur en Grèce, lors des fiançailles du diadoque Constantin avec la sœur du Kaiser. Il a donc été en situation de voir de près le monde officiel de Berlin. On lui doit un ouvrage très documenté : “History of the german struggle for liberty, 1806-1848”, où il prouva qu'il connaissait aussi bien l'histoire du pays que les différentes classes de la société. Témoin intéressant à consulter s'il en fut. D'abord grand admirateur de l'Allemagne, il ne tarda pas à constater la place excessive et néfaste qu'y prenait de plus en plus le régime prussien. Américain à l'esprit très libéral et très libre, qui avait goûté le charme de l'esprit français et apprécié l'éminente qualité du gentleman britannique, il finit par être fatigué jusqu'à la nausée de la morgue des junkers, de l'esprit militariste qui fausse l'éducation, le caractère, la politique économique et jusqu'à la science elle-même. Quant à l'empereur, il note son intelligence, son charme personnel, mais aussi une certaine grossièreté de manières... Il regrette qu'il se soit compromis dans les aventures d'une politique personnelle qui prit de bonne heure un caractère de provocation à l'égard des puissances rivales comme l'Angleterre et la France. Il ne lui pardonne pas plus son télégramme au président Krûger que l'insolence de l'amiral Diederichs à l'égard de Dewey et de la marine de guerre américaine. La brutalité prussienne, qu'il retrouve à la base du grand effort allemand depuis un demi-siècle, lui est odieuse. Il déteste Bismarck et il ne parle de son fils Herbert qu'avec mépris." (Ch.
