ORHAN KEMAL OGUTCU 1914 1970.
My father's house / The idle years. The story of little man 1-2.
Istanbul: Everest Yayinlari 2013. Soft cover. New. 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall. Paperback. Pbo. Cr. 8vo. 20 x 14 cm. In English. 247 p. My father's house / The idle years. The story of little man 1-2. Being one of the most well-loved books of Orhan Kemal an author known for including autobiographical elements in his writing My Father's House is also the first title in the series "The Little Man's Novel". One of the best examples of a coming-of-age tale in Turkish literature My Father's House is a prequel to another well-known novel The Idle Years. Though they can be read independently of one another these novels carry that subtle world view that is present in all works by Orhan Kemal. Orhan Kemal's titles are amongst those rare treasures one encounters in life. Only a few other authors can impress and shape the reader like he does. Orhan Kemal shows us the way to gain hope and he optimistic again.

Everest Yayinlari paperback

SADAT Anwar 1918 1981

Rosny Leon Louis Lucien Prunol de 1837 1914
Ensayo sobre la interpretación de la escritura hierática de la América Central
8xxi1135 pages with figures drawings some in color and xx leaves of plates of which number XX folds out. Elephant folio 18" x 12" bound in quarter red leather with six raised band compartments lettered and decorated in gilt over marbled boards. Translated by Juan de Dios de la Rada and Delgado. First Spanish edition limited to 200 copies of which this is number 141.

This Spanish-language translation of Rosny's essay on hieroglyphic writing is from the Codex Troano which was named for a previous owner Don Juan Tro and Ortolano a professor of Spanish palaeography. In his prologue to this book Juan Rada and Delgado endorses Rosny's assertion that the Maya codex purchased by a Madrid museum in 1875 and named Codex Cortesianus is truly part of the same book as the Codex Troano which was discovered in Spain in the 1860s By Brasseur de Bourbourg. The two fragments were reunited in 1888 and the whole is now known as the Madrid Codex. The reconnected manuscript consists of fifty-six leaves with writing on both sides. Its date has been disputed with most scholars believing that it was executed late in the Post-Classic period but before the Spanish invasion.

With the formation of the Societe Americaine de France established in 1857 primarily with the enthusiasm of Braseur de Borubourg and a small number of scholars and among them was Leon Louis Lucien Prunol de Rosny 1837-1914 a student and later professor in the School of Oriental Languages who did extensive research on the language and writing systems of the Far East. Rosny's special concern was Japanese but also studied Chinese Korean and the languages of Southeast Asia. His distinguished career included the important position of director of the Ecole des Hautes Estudes Sorbonne. Equipped with a comparative background in languages and writing systems held by few other students of Maya writing Rosny approached the problem of decipherment with considerable rigor. His background allowed him to recognize the mixed nature of the Maya system in which he identified "figurative" "idiographic" and "phonetic" signs. He also understood the problems in using Landa's alphabet but nonetheless asserted its basically syllabic nature. Only a handful of his original decipherments have stood the test of time most conspicuously his clever elucidation of the Cortesianus 1883 and Persianus 1887 Codices.

The story of the Paris Codex or Peresianus is evocative of Latin America's image abroad. One day in Paris Rosny ran across this manuscript while looking into a "basket of papers in a neglected part of the library. The twenty-two-page document bearing the name "Perez" a library staff member who worked on this codex in 1859 had disappeared before Jose Perez found it. Rosny published a colorful and historic study entitled Codex Peresianus Manuscrit hieratique des anciens iondiens de l'Amerique centrale conserve a la Biblioteque Nationale de Paris. Scholars prefer to use the name Paris instead of Peresianusto avoid any confusion with a codex known as Codice Perez The Book of Chilam Balam of Mani.

Condition:

Corners gently bumped plates professionally re-hinged else a very good copy of an rare item. With a beautiful mezzo soprano voice and equally beautiful hair that extended six feet in length she had a long and successful career as a soloist that began when Giuseppe Boghetti Marian Anderson's teacher discovered her singing aboard a cruise ship with her parents in 1938. Thebom performed at the Metropolitan Opera House in over 350 performances.

Photograph by Angus McBean 1950. Pictured in the new biography of McBean p.103: "After a series of conventional poses the singer suggested that McBean might photograph her with her own hair which reached the floor when let down. McBean contrived this pose which required that the singer lie down on a bed of sand. He tore a sheet of wrapping paper to fit the contours of her hair in order to protect it from the grit."

The Bancroft Company Chicago and San Francisco: 1893-1894. 1894 Issued by subscription. Twenty-three of 25 original parts. Lacks parts 1 & 25. Folio. 310 x 415 mm. Forty pages in each part. Numerous photo illustrations. A very well preserved set. Books in parts are works which were published piecemeal mainly in the 19th century over a period of months or years. Each unit usually having a separate magazine-like cover. This method of publishing benefited the publisher as it was thought that the price of a weekly or monthly part at one shilling or a quarter was affordable to a wider readership than the price of pound sterling or $ 5.00 for a bound volume. Though this particular set was very costly at $ 1.00 for each part! Since they were meant to be bound by the purchaser very few have survived into our present era. This set is extremely scarce in parts format. A wonderful artifact of the World's Columbian Exposition Chicago: 1893. This edition apparently not in Arents 1957. RARE. PRICE JUST REDUCED! PARTS 2. Soft cover. Very Good. The Bancroft Company, Chicago and San Francisco: 1893-1894. paperback

WHYTE Sir William 1843 1914
Contemporary typescript copies of two letters written by a Canadian railway executive to President of the Grand Trunk Railway T. G. Shaughnessy recording in great detail a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway and his impressions of the line and region
Winnipeg 1901. 4to. 10pp. and 43pp. respectively plus 31pp. of additional tables of customs schedules and weight of merchandise through Vladivostock. Early grey cloth upper cover lettered in gilt An interesting contemporary account of the Trans-Siberian Railroad by an important Canadian railroad executive. "After a short career with a Scottish railway William Whyte emigrated to the Canadas in 1863 and accepted a job as a brakeman on the Grand Trunk Railway. Rising through the ranks he served as freight and station agent at various locations culminating his career with the company as the assistant superintendent of its central division. In October 1883 he moved to the Ontario and Quebec Railway as its general superintendent and a year later when this company was leased in perpetuity to the Canadian Pacific Railway he became the superintendent of the Ontario division. In 1886 he was transferred to Winnipeg as the superintendent of the CPR's western division . In 1901 Shaughnessy who had succeeded Sir William Cornelius Van Horne as president of the CPR in 1899 appointed Whyte his assistant to advise him on 'all matters connected with colonization proposed extensions of the Companys railway system the development of industries along the Companys lines the establishment of new business connections and the administration of the Companys lands town-sites and other properties of that description.' In 1903 Whyte was elected second vice-president in charge of the western lines. He was promoted vice-president in 1910. Whyte's most pressing problem from 1901 was to solve the recurrent blockages hampering the export of grain from the prairies. Under his direction the company constructed nearly 4000 miles of branch lines within a decade multiplied its rolling stock and experimented with ever-larger locomotives" Dictionary of Canadian Biography. The primary reason for this trip would appear to be to ascertain whether the Trans-Siberian railway would make Siberia a significant competitor to Canada's grain exports. Focusing on Siberia Whyte's epistolary reports goes into great detail on the route from Cheliabinsk to Vladivostock the agricultural prospects and natural resources along the way with a particular emphasis on Irkutsk and the articles imported. Much of his information came from first-hand examination as well as conversations with government officials and local merchants. He also comments on the construction of the railroad itself. unknown
