Richmond Hill NY 1904 Very Good 2 page front and back handwritten signed letter on 6"x85" Beech Street Richmond Hill Queens NY letterhead The letter is attached with tape along the left edge to a 9x11" card on which is a photograph of Riis and handwritten note "Jacob Riis the great friend of Pres Roosevelt" The letter is clean with mailing folds; 1 or 2 letters at the edge of the reverse side are hidden behind the tape Riis writes to Miss Dertz thanks her for "kind words" writing "the book was written out of my heart that is why it appeals to yours Your verses are so beautiful that I am sendng them this morning to Mrs Roosevelt to treasure among the memories that must make their White House stay forever dear to them in spite of the other side of human nature one sees so much of these" Undoubtedly Riis refers to his book "Theodore Roosevelt the Citizen" published in 1904 Riis and Roosevelt had become close friends when Roosevelt was New York City Police Commissioner and accompanied Riis during the latter's research into the horrid slum conditions about which he wrote in his groundbreaking first book "How the Other Half Lives" 1890. <br/> <br/> unknown

New York 1898 Fine 2-page handwritten signed letter from Jacob A Riis to Mr Clarke on 6"x9" Mulberry Street letterhead in which he conveys the following: "Gov Roosevelt writes to me from Oyster Bay 'I wish I could accept but it is an absolute impossibility I cannot do it' " Riis goes on to explain that the Governor had 200 urgent invitations to speak and "the mere labor of declining as he had to was enormous" The remainder of the letter references the Clarkes a meeting and New Haven Ct as Riis writes "perhaps 'the little dollar' that forms the stories in my new book 'Out of Mulberry Street' came from New Haven." Theodore Roosevelt was New York City Police Commissioner when Riis wrote his landmark "How the Other Half Lives" in 1890 and would accompany Riis on investigations into the slum conditions in New York tenements and streets of the lower east side Roosevelt instituted many reforms upon taking office as Governor of New York State <br/><br/> <br/><br/> <br/> <br/> unknown

Professor Vogt's study is based largely upon field work completed before the initiation of the Values Project but has been re-cast in terms of points of view developed during his participation in the values investigation. Indeed this monograph constitutes the first full-scale and complete application of our present theory on values to a body of empirical data. For this reason and also because of the excellent brief description of the peoples in this area and of the inter-relations Dr. Vogt report constitutes a most appropriate initial volume in the Rimrock Values Series. The return to their communities of Navaho veterans of World War II was a singularly inviting opportunity for the student of culture change and especially of the role of specific individuals in culture change.Vogt was the only anthropologist to seize this opportunity and to study the process intensively in one Navaho group. His report is remarkable for richness of documentation for a careful selecting and combining of methods and techniques and for many-sidedness of theoretical orientation. His investigation also highlights the intrinsic difficulties in problems of this sort. He faces up to these difficulties with candor and modesty and yet it is clear that he emerges with new generalizations that deserve cross- cultural testing. Perhaps the greatest increment to theory consists in the careful dissection of the intricate interdependence of personal social and cultural factors in the acceptance or rejection of aspects of a foreign culture. This examination would not have been possible within the framework of narrowly anthropological concepts. Vogt has synthesized thinking from several disciplines and provided at least the adumbration of a general theory of the role of values in culture change. First edition.<br /><br />This work was begun at the end of September 1941 and stopped at the beginning of March 1942 for the preparation of this report. They concentrated on general exploration and limited their excavations to small tests in order to cover the greatest possible ground in the limited time available. The team met with great cooperation from authorities and people of Cuzco. The collections of the work consisted chiefly of sherd material are deposited in the Museo de Antropologia Magadalena Vieja in Lima with the exception of a small section of representative pieces in the Peabody Museum. A number of which are illustrated in this report.<br /><br />Robert V. Kemper born in San Diego California on November 21 1945 resided in Dallas Texas where he was Professor of Anthropology at Southern Methodist University. He received his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1971 from the University of California at Berkeley and spent the academic year 1971-1972 there as a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow in Mexican American Studies before joining the SMU faculty. At SMU he served as Chair of the Department of Anthropology President of the Faculty Senate and member of the University Board of Trustees. His research interests included migration and urbanization history of anthropology community development tourism Mexico and the United States. His numerous publications include Anthropologists in Cities 1974 Migration and Adaptation: Tzintzuntzan Peasants in Mexico City 1977 Migration Across Frontiers: Mexico and the United States 1979 Chronicling Cultures: Long-Term Field Research in Anthropology 2002 and Urban Life 5th ed. 2010. He has served as President of the Society for Latin American Anthropology and the Society for Urban Anthropology as well as editor of Human Organization editor for Social-Cultural Anthropology of the American Anthropologist and associate editor for Urban Anthropology.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Kemper's stamp to front end paper corners bumped some edge wear else a very good copy. 'It is known that a close integration of the methods of Abstract Algebra and of Mathematical Logic can lead to results which are of considerable interest to both subjects. The present work.is based on this fundamental idea. The book is chiefly concerned with completeness problems for algebraic structures. The two most interesting algebraic notions for which completeness has been established in the past are the concept of an algebraically closed field of given characteristic and the concept of a real-closed field. By introducing a mofified version of completeness we are able to establish the property for further important types of structures in particular for certain classes of algebraically closed fields with a non-archimedean valuation in an ordered abelian group. WWII Basic Training Notebook of Charles R Morrill
1944. Edge wear on notebook. Interior pages are soiled and toned due to age. Covers have stains as well. . A WWII notebook comprised of notes from Charles R Morrill's basic training as an infantry man in the Army. It is clear that the majority of the notebook are his notes taken during his training. Covered in Morrill's training is a variety of weapons he might encounter 60 M M Mortar M-2 M 1 Garand self-loading rifle and bangalore torpedos basic first aid tracking and scouting navigational skills chemical warfare identifying different gases and how to use the gas mask and how to safe guard information. Included with the notebook is two additionally pieces of paper. The first is hand written legend for symbols that are most often found on maps and the second is a printed piece of paper with 10 names on it. Printed at the top is Call -- 309 Oct. 11 1944 10 men. The number 309 was Morrill's draft number and his along with the ten men listed on page were number was called on Oct 11 1944. Morrill and the other men were officially registered on Oct 12 1944 in Manchester NH. By the end of the war Morrill was a Corporal in the army and was officially discharged on Aug 4 1946. Later after returning home to New Hampshire Morrill would marry Evelyn Eisler 1916-2008 and eventually pass away in 1986. The notebook itself is a Blue Horse Composition Book that has been cut in half. Measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/4". Infantry riflemen in particular are safe. No other branch takes the ground and all other branches support us." "Carelessness in talk and handling equipment weakens the whole unit."
