‎br. Un mattino di luglio Frida Kahlo si sveglia nel suo letto in casa dei genitori. Ha subito da poco la trentaduesima operazione, l'amputazione della gamba destra. Prova ad alzarsi, ma non ci riesce. Il suo corpo è segnato ovunque da cicatrici: sulle gambe, sulle braccia, sulla pancia, sulla schiena. Aveva sei anni quando un mattino si era svegliata con la febbre alta. Poi era arrivato il dolore alla gamba, come se un grosso animale l'avesse morsa e non volesse riaprire le mascelle. I medici dissero che era poliomielite. Frida restò zoppa. Fino a quando, il 17 settembre del 1925, diciottenne, un incidente d'autobus completò l'opera di distruzione del suo corpo. Costretta da allora su un letto a baldacchino tra dolori costanti, cominciò a popolare il suo mondo di fantasmi, a dipingere l'infermità e l'isolamento. La scrittrice Slavenka Drakulic ha saputo raccontare la tormentata esistenza di Frida Kahlo a partire dalla fine, ripercorrendo in un flusso di pensieri l'infanzia, la gioventù, gli anni del matrimonio, l'amore ossessivo per il pittore Diego Rivera, i tradimenti, la continua lotta con il proprio corpo, la forza onirica e visionaria della sua arte, il fuoco, cupo e luminosissimo, in cui visse e si spense una pittrice straordinaria.‎

After the publication of his novel An American Tragedy 1925 Theodore Dreiser was generally considered the United States' greatest living author. He received early encouragement from the influential critic H. L. Mencken and his novel Sister Carrie 1900 enjoyed a warm critical reception in England though its poor sales in the United States drove Dreiser to clinical depression. Dreiser wrote thirty-one short stories and many of these were revised and collected in two volumes: Free and Other Stories 1918 and Chains 1927. Dreiser pioneered Naturalism in the United States along with Stephen Crane Frank Norris and James T. Farrell all of whom maintained that men and women had very little agency in their lives and that their fate was determined largely by such ungovernable forces as biology economics and society. First edition in first state binding and second state text.<br /><br /><i>Jennie Gerhardt</i> was Theodore Dreiser's second novel and his first true commercial success. Today it is generally regarded as one of his three best novels along with <i>Sister Carrie</i> and <i>An American Tragedy</i>. As submitted to Harper and Brothers in 1911 Jennie Gerhardt was a powerful study of a woman tragically compromised by birth and fate. Harpers agreed to publish the book but was nervous about its subject matter and moral stance. Jennie has an illegitimate child by one man and lives out of wedlock with another - but Dreiser does not condemn her for her behavior. As a requirement for publication Harpers insisted on cutting and revising the text. Although Dreiser fought against many of the cuts and succeeded in restoring some material Harpers shortened the text by 16000 words and completely revised its style and tone. These changes ultimately transformed Jennie Gerhardt from a blunt carefully documented work of social realism to a touching love story merely set against a social background. Passages critical of organized religion and of the institution of marriage were reduced and altered. Perhaps most important Jennie's point of view - her innate romantic mysticism - was largely edited out of the text. As a consequence the central dialectic of the novel was skewed and the narrative thrown out of balance.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Cloth spine lightly sunned with some rubbing previous owner's signatures to front blank and rear paste down.
