Inscribed: "Especially and gratefully for Veronica Hutchinson Dick Halliburton Dec 6 1929." Small chip and tear in left margin; good condition.<br/><br/> American traveler adventurer and author who died at age 39 in an attempt to sail a Chinese junk the Sea Dragon across the Pacific ocean from Hong Kong to the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco a feat that made him legendary. More recent revelations have shown that Halliburton though infatuated with the image of heroic masculinity was an early proponent of Gay Rights. He was romantically linked to film star Ramon Navarro and philanthropist Noel Sullivan. His most enduring relationship was with freelance journalist Paul Mooney with whom he shared living quarters and perished on March 24 1939.<br/><br/> unknown books

Dopo "Il fondamentalista riluttante", in cui si racconta l'andata-e-ritorno nel mondo occidentale di un giovane pakistano di buona famiglia, Changez, laureato a Princeton, analista finanziario rampante e "giannizzero" dei tempi moderni, in "Come diventare ricchi sfondati nell'Asia emergente" Mohsin Hamid presenta la storia di un'altra ascesa. Questa volta, però, Hamid cambia classe sociale, ambientazione e voce, proiettando il lettore quasi direttamente nei panni del "tu" protagonista, cui è rivolto il suo peculiare libro di autoaiuto. Dal poverissimo villaggio di una non meglio precisata nazione dell'"Asia emergente", il "tu" protagonista muove il primo passo: l'urbanizzazione. Da qui, sempre guidato all'apparenza dalle istruzioni a volte singolari del manuale, il protagonista si appresta a conquistare la ricchezza a tappe forzate, facendosi un'istruzione, evitando (senza troppo successo) d'innamorarsi, scansando gli idealisti e i gruppi religiosi, ricorrendo a mezzi poco ortodossi. E dell'Asia, nel corso di questa ascesa, emergono anche i lati oscuri o sommersi: la violenza, la corruzione che rende indispensabile "farsi amico un burocrate", la presenza pervasiva anche nella vita economica dei militari, "artisti della guerra". Finché anche il "tu" protagonista di "Come diventare ricchi sfondati nell'Asia emergente" finirà, in maniera ironicamente speculare al Changez del romanzo precedente, per doversi "concentrare sui fondamentali".

brossura Ogni impero ha i suoi giannizzeri, e Changez è un giannizzero dell'Impero Americano. Giovane pakistano, ammesso a Princeton grazie ai suoi eccezionali risultati scolastici, dopo la laurea summa cum laude viene assunto da una prestigiosa società di consulenza newyorkese. Diventa cosi un brillante analista finanziario, sempre in viaggio ai quattro angoli del mondo. Impegnato a volare tra Manila e il New Jersey, Lahore e Valparaiso, e a frequentare l'alta società di Manhattan al braccio della bella e misteriosa Erica, Changez non si rende conto di far parte delle truppe d'assalto di una vera e propria guerra economica globale, combattuta al servizio di un paese che non è il suo. Finché arriva l'Undici settembre a scuotere le sue certezze. "Vidi crollare prima una e poi l'altra delle torri gemelle del World Trade Center. E allora sorrisi". È questo il primo sintomo di un'inarrestabile trasformazione. Il businessman in carriera, rasato a puntino e impeccabilmente fasciato nell'uniforme scura del manager, comincia a perdere colpi. La produttività cala e la barba cresce, quella barba che agli occhi dei suoi concittadini fa di ogni "arabo" un potenziale terrorista. E mentre gli Stati Uniti invadono l'Afghanistan, il Pakistan e l'India sembrano sull'orlo di una guerra atomica, giunge per Changez il momento di compiere un passo irreversibile...
