br. Nei primi dodici anni della sua vita Le Ly Hayslip è una contadina in un piccolo villaggio nei pressi di Da Nang, nel Vietnam centrale. Ultima di sei figli di una famiglia buddhista, conosce presto la violenza della guerra, combattendo accanitamente tra le fila dei vietcong contro i soldati americani e sudvietnamiti. Tutto ciò che sa di quel cruento conflitto, Le Ly lo apprende dalla voce dei quadri di partito nordvietnamiti, che non esitano a fare appello alla tradizionale paura dello straniero e alla devozione dei contadini per gli antenati, pur di scatenare una guerra totale contro l'«invasore» americano. In quegli anni, perciò, gli Stati Uniti, per Le Ly e la sua famiglia, non sono altro che una nazione grande e potente che mira malvagiamente a conquistare un paese piccolo e povero per impadronirsi dei suoi campi di riso, delle sue paludi, delle sue pagode. L'orrore della guerra travolge, però, totalmente la giovane esistenza della ragazza. Le Ly si ritrova, infatti, dapprima in una prigione sudvietnamita, in cui viene sottoposta a tortura perché sospettata di «simpatie rivoluzionarie», e poi, dopo il rilascio, condannata a morte dai vietcong perché ritenuta una spia. Nel 1970 fugge negli Stati Uniti, a San Diego, in California. Vi vive sedici anni e ottiene la cittadinanza americana. Nel 1986 torna in Vietnam per vedere che cosa ne è stato della sua famiglia, del villaggio da cui se ne è andata, ancora bambina, e della sua gente. Questo libro racconta la sua storia, la storia di una figlia della guerra. È però anche un'opera in cui l'immagine del Vietnam offerta dagli americani, quell'immagine «fatta di violenze, prostituzione, corruzione, morte, boat people, bambini umiliati», cede il posto a quella di un paese «ricco di una cultura di 4000 anni, dove 70 milioni di persone vivono nel rispetto dei legami familiari e dei valori antichi, in grande armonia con la natura» (la Repubblica).

La vicenda, che si svolge nei palazzi di nobili famiglie cinesi, è una vera e propria saga che descrive la realtà, la cultura e i costumi della società aristocratica, con varie protagoniste femminili e un intrigo amoroso. Il nostro libro propone una riscrittura sintetica del romanzo attraverso 230 "episodi": sono le didascalie lunghe che accompagnano le 230 tavole di pittura classica cinese che illustrano la storia. Le tavole sono state dipinte su seta da Sun Wen (1819-1891), un artista che ha dedicato 36 anni della sua vita alla loro realizzazione. Sono eccezionali per varietà e qualità artistica, ma anche per forza narrativa: scene di genere, interni, personaggi, paesaggi, il tutto minuziosamente raffigurato. Grazie all'efficace associazione tra testo narrativo e immagini, il libro, che è cucito con filo a vista ed è confezionato in una scatola stampata, si può sfogliare per immergersi nella bellezza dell'arte cinese, ma anche leggere come fosse una graphic novel.

Le Biblische Geschichten für die Jugend furono pubblicate nel 1824, ultima opera del grande scrittore (amato da Goethe, come poi da Benjamin, da Kafka, Hermann Hesse, Elias Canetti, Ernst Bloch, Adorno) che sarebbe scomparso due anni dopo. Esse vennero tradotte - e di quell'impresa rimangono rarissimi esemplari - a Coira nel 1828-1829, in due volumi ad uso delle comunità riformate dei Grigioni, accompagnate dalla traduzione del suo Catechismo cristiano, 1831. Sono il compimento del suo progetto di erasmiana conciliazione, una lezione luminosa, valida anche per il nostro presente.
