Le pagine iniziali del libro ci raccontano di una frana che ha fatto scomparire l'albergo e ucciso tutti coloro che erano dentro. Che non erano però tutti. Chi è morto? Chi si è salvato? È il 1947, l'immediato dopoguerra inglese è ancora molto duro, il cibo è parzialmente razionato, il governo ha imposto tasse pesanti e l'evasione fiscale è un tema forte. Ma è anche estate, un'estate eccezionalmente calda e secca, in grado di addolcire la cupezza della situazione e di infondere gioia di vivere. La genialità de "La festa" sta nel prologo, il tipo di prologo che dice come tutto andrà a finire tralasciando però l'intera storia. E così si corre sulle pagine del libro, che ci ridanno in ordine cronologico gli eventi, per capire cosa succede a chi e perché. In un racconto che si fa via via sempre più concitato, inframmezzato da lettere e pagine di diario, la Kennedy dipinge un'umanità i cui pregi e difetti vengono perfettamente raccontati.

A Milano è una giornata di scontri violentissimi tra i manifestanti dell'ultrasinistra e la polizia, con disordini che si protraggono per ore e devastazioni diffuse, incluso l'incendio di alcuni locali della sede del "Corriere della Sera" in via Solferino. Tavecchio passa dal centro durante una pausa dei tumulti; quando, alle cinque e dieci, insieme ad altri pedoni attraversa piazza della Scala, pare un momento di calma. Se non fosse che all'improvviso, senza alcuna ragione comprensibile, da una camionetta della polizia partono alcuni lacrimogeni verso quel gruppetto di persone inermi. Un candelotto, sparato ad altezza d'uomo, raggiunge al collo Tavecchio, che morirà tre giorni dopo senza aver ripreso conoscenza. È una vicenda tragica, che tutti dovremmo conoscere e ricordare. E invece no; perché uno che muore in questo modo non trova nessuno che abbia interesse a perpetuarne la memoria: ovviamente non lo Stato, che, per averne causato la morte, vuole soprattutto farlo dimenticare; non la politica, perché - se i militanti caduti negli scontri si onorano continuamente nel ricordo - sui passanti ammazzati per sbaglio, inutili alla causa, si sorvola con elegante indifferenza; e non i media, visto che un morto così fa ben poca notizia. br. All'improvviso bussano alla porta e uno scrittore si ritrova ostaggio di un gruppo di persone che, con la minaccia delle armi, gli intima di raccontare una storia. In difficoltà, lo scrittore cerca di cavarsela in una situazione che "ad Amos Oz e David Grossman non capiterebbe mai". In "Cheesus Christ" un uomo viene pugnalato a morte in un fast food dopo aver ordinato un hamburger senza formaggio. La vicenda ha conseguenze imprevedibili e apocalittiche che riflettono ironicamente il caos e la casualità dell'esistenza. Una delle trentotto storie brevi contenute in questo volume si dichiara esplicitamente e senza pudore come "il racconto migliore del libro". The song written in a blues tempo is sung in the show by several characters but is most closely associated with the character Julie the biracial leading lady of the showboat "Cotton Blossom".<br style=""><br style="">Kern's first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein the popular musical Sunny had played successfully at the Hippodrome in 1926.
