Tutti i personaggi della "Grande Distruzione" sono quantomeno moralmente discutibili, per non dire esecrabili a prescindere dalle gerarchie, - basti vedere il caso di Arysen, l'addetto alle pulizie con sogni di gloria, assorbito per primo dalla logica capitalista - e non riescono mai a costruire fra loro relazioni sincere, profonde e disinteressate. Quindi uno degli aspetti più fortemente drammatici messi in luce dal romanzo, è proprio quello che riguarda la distruzione dei legami sociali, parallelamente all'esibizione di intenzioni diametralmente opposte come la creazione di servizi che permetterebbero di annientare questa solitudine, o perfino di creare legami di amicizia profondi e duraturi, con evidenti scopi pubblicitari ovvero puramente commerciali. La logica del profitto sta alla base di questo sistema che la Powell analizza indirettamente, mettendo in risalto tutte le contraddizioni, la miseria umana, opponendo a esse un sarcasmo a volte cinico.

Armato di candore estremo e di illimitata fiducia nel prossimo, Arthur fa saltare tutti i complotti; quasi senza volerlo ribalta ogni volta la situazione a suo vantaggio, con effetti comici dirompenti. Un romanzo che fa molto ridere - non per niente Woody Allen ne ha tratto un film memorabile - e regala speranza su quanto possano ancora contare qualità umane in disuso: altruismo, gentilezza e bontà.

Lo fa con grande delicatezza, con lievità addirittura, alternando diversi registri narrativi. Daria rivive il ricordo struggente di una madre che era stata bellissima e irraggiungibile, e che ora è devastata dal male; ne accetta senza falsi pudori l'inarrestabile decadimento fisico; infine trova la forza per astrarsi dalla drammaticità del presente grazie alla sua pratica spirituale e a una buona dose di ironia. La fine è ineluttabile, Daria lo sa, ma lo scorrere lento dei giorni la aiuta a riconciliarsi con il passato e dà un nuovo significato al loro rapporto. E quando si presenta la morte, è pronta ad accoglierla, quasi ricevesse un mazzo di rose.
