‎Van Dine S. S. PSEUD Willard Huntington Wright 1888 1939‎

‎The Kidnap Murder Case: A Philo Vance Story‎

‎3166 ad pages. Small octavo 7 3/4" x 5 1/2" bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine and cover in original jacket. Has the "A" on the title verso. First edition. Wright wrote as a critic and journalist until 1923 when he became ill from what was given out as overwork but was in reality a secret drug addiction according to John Loughery's biography Alias S.S. Van Dine. His doctor confined him to bed supposedly because of a heart ailment but actually because of a cocaine addiction for more than two years. In frustration and boredom he began collecting and studying thousands of volumes of crime and detection. In 1926 this paid off with the publication of his first S. S. Van Dine novel The Benson Murder Case. Wright took his pseudonym from the abbreviation of "steamship" and from Van Dine which he claimed was an old family name. Wright wrote a series of short stories for Warner Brothers film studio in the early 1930s. These stories were used as the basis for a series of 12 short films each around 20 minutes long that were released in 1930 - 1931. Of these The Skull Murder Mystery 1931 shows Wright's vigorous plot construction. It is also notable for its non-racist treatment of Chinese characters something quite unusual in its day. As far as it is known none of Van Dine's screen treatments have been published in book form and none of the manuscripts survive. Short films were popular then and Hollywood made hundreds of them during the studio era. Except for a handful of comedy silents however most of these films are forgotten and not listed in film reference books. Wright died April 11 1939 in New York City a year after the publication of an unpopular experimental novel that incorporated one of the biggest stars in radio comedy The Gracie Allen Murder Case and leaving a complete novelette-length story that was intended as a film vehicle for Sonja Henie and was published posthumously as The Winter Murder Case. Condition: Unobtrusive book seller's stamp on front gutter of end paper front past down lightly soiled. Jacket professionally repaired with minor edge wear. A very good copy in like jacket. ‎Bull Johan 1893 1945‎

‎Manuscript In the Back-Yard and the Cellar‎

‎Hardcover. Very Good. Mock-up manuscript for an unpublished children's book manuscript. N.d. circa 1930. Oblong 25 by 38 cm. 15 pages of illustrated text following the manuscript cover. In addition there are three matted illustrations of the semi-abstract animal motives found on the front cover. It is unknown with any certainty why this immensely charming and very professional manuscript was never published. It is our conjecture that the manuscript was submitted early in the Depression when publishers were cutting back on the children's book list and especially color illustrated books both because of the economic straits they were suffering like virtually every industry in the American economy and more specifically perhaps changes in the marketplace for children's books with some shift of buying from families to public libraries with a subsequent drop in overall sales as a result. Nonetheless this manuscript was intended by Bull to be published as on the back cover there is a label indicated that the manuscript had been submitted by Fred A. Wish Inc. presumably Bull's literary agent. The book is a small collection of nonsense verses about animals around a house -- cats dogs mice chickens ducks. Each of the poems runs one to two pages and is accompanied by one to five illustrations with the text and illustrations pasted onto the heavy card stock leaves. Condition: card leaves are detached from spine band. A few minor edge chips to cards.

hardcover books‎

ISBN: 047132969X / 0-471-32969-X "One of the most important recent discoveries in cosmology--and science in general--is that the expansion rate of the universe is not staying steady or getting slower as most scientists had assumed; on the contrary it is accelerating. Something is counteracting gravity and making it so that in billions of years the universe will be an even vaster emptier realm filled with stars and galaxies flickering out one by one until there is only darkness. In this book Livio a senior scientist at Baltimore's Space Telescope Science Institute evaluates current theories about the universe in terms of whether or not they are "beautiful." Livio defines beauty for purely scientific purposes: a beautiful scientific theory he explains must be symmetric and simple reductionist and it must follow the Copernican principle that man is not the center of the universe--it need not be elegant. Livio's discussion however carefully constructed like a well-laid-out mathematical proof certainly is elegant. Readers who only hazily remember high school math and science classes will enjoy the author's clear jargon-free explanation of such complicated astronomical concepts as inflationary theory "pocket" or multiple universes and the anthropic principle. Although the opening chapters are weighed down with extraneous references to art and literature once Livio gets into his subject he employs such references more selectively. Any educated individual interested in current theories about the past and future of the universe will want to read this lucid book." Pub. Weekly John Wiley & Sons, 2000. hardcover books‎

‎ASTON Francis William 1877 1945.‎

‎Isotopes.‎

‎London:: Edward Arnold 1922. 1922. 8vo. viii 152 pp. 4 plates 21 figs. or tables index. Original navy blue blind- and gilt-stamped cloth. Very good. Printing and the Mind of Man 412. First edition. "Aston's invention of the mass spectrograph an instrument giving a concentrated and extremely detailed breakdown of the constituents of analyzed material enabled him to discover that elements are composed of atoms of varying mass and that the atomic weight of an element is an average of the atoms comprising it. Aston used the word "isotopes" to describe atoms of differing weights within the same element a term first coined by Frederick Soddy to describe separate elements that are nevertheless homogeneous in chemical behavior." :: Norman. Aston won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1922. NOBEL-PRIZE: "At the end of 1909 he accepted the invitation of Sir J.J. Thomson to work as his assistant at the Cavendish Laboratory Cambridge on studies of positive rays. It was during this period that he obtained definite evidence for the existence of two isotopes of the inert gas neon." "This research was interrupted by the War of 1914-1918 during which time Aston worked at the Royal Aircraft Establishment Farnborough where he studied the effect of atmospheric conditions on aeroplane fabrics and dopes i.e. synthetic coatings." "Returning to the Cavendish Laboratory in 1919 he again attacked the problem of the separation of the isotopes of neon. He quickly achieved success in this by his invention of the mass spectrograph an apparatus in which the ingenious use of electromagnetic focusing enabled him to utilize the very slight differences in mass of the two isotopes to effect their separation. Extending this principle to other chemical elements he discovered in a series of measurements no less than 212 of the naturally occurring isotopes. From the results of this work he was able to formulate the so-called Whole Number Rule which states that the mass of the oxygen isotope being defined all the other isotopes have masses that are very nearly whole numbers." "Aston continued to make measurements using an improved instrument with ever-increasing refinement and precision. He observed and was able to measure those deviations from the Whole Number Rule which were to become so important in the field of atomic energy." "The results of his work were published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society and in the Philosophical Magazine. He was also the author of the books Isotopes 1922; revised edition 1941 and of Structural Units of the Material Universe 1923." :: NobelPrize. Rare. FIRST EDITION. Georg Scheffers studied at Leipzig from 1884 to 1888 obtaining his doctorate in 1890. From 1896 he lectured at Darmstadt becoming a full professor there in 1900. In 1907 he was appointed to Charlottenburg where he held the chair of mathematics until he retired in 1935. Scheffers was a student of Sophus Lie who was at Leipzig from 1886 until 1896 and he greatly influenced Scheffers' work. Lie suggested the topic for his doctoral thesis on plane contact transformations and also the topic for his Habilitationsschrift on complex number systems. Scheffers' most important work also inspired by Lie was a paper in 1903 on Abel's theorem. Later in life Scheffers wrote many popular mathematics textbooks and edited Lie's works. His favorite topic was differential geometry and here he discovered many properties of particular curves and surfaces. University of St. Andrews. ‎McDonnell Alexander 1857 1945 or MacDonnell‎

‎Game Book. A. McDonnell.‎

‎1880-1917. Full Morocco. Very Good. Oblong 21 by 30 cm. 92 numbered leaves with content with log entries more or less statistical on all the versos and pictures and/or original drawings mostly mounted on 58 rectos with some additional loose material. 129 numbered leaves in all. Several of the log pages have mounted photos obscuring the log as it is clear that this game book was at some point re-purposed to be a more general album with some emphasis on sports including also fishing foxhunting and sailing but also there are two pages of photos from South Africa with photos of native tribesmen ostriches a hut Cecil Rhodes house etc. 13 original works of art -- watercolored pencil pen and ink -- in addition to numerous painted fish hook and fly vignettes these sometimes done directly onto the page. Most charming are the comical illustrations of anthropomorphic foxes. Sepia photos are of the country estates their stately homes and rural settings of the hunts as well as the people involved -- the hosts and guests during these country weekends. Many but by no means all of the photos have captions helpfully identifying the participants or the locations. And the log proper provides the names of those participating in the shooting and often what would now be regarded as obscenely large kills. Among the many aristocrats and wealthy in the photographs and/or logs are Lady Randolph Churchill Jennie Churchill Arthur Balfour Lady Minto Mary the famous 4th Countess Henry Lascelles the 5th Earl of Harewood the 5th Earl of Carnavon of King Tut fame as well as the owner of the castle used in Downton Abbey Baron Rothschild Lord de Grey Lord Ashburton Prince Murat the Duke of Buccleuch Prince Duleep de Singh Lord Rosebery and on and on. Country homes include Longleat Greystoke Castle the Hirsel Highcliffe Castle etc. Alexander McDonnell was a son of the 5th Earl of Antrim and a clerk in the House of Lords. Obviously he was very well connected and surely very popular among the upper echelons of English society back then. And we would note that many of the most illustriously titled have frequent entries here; what we have here is a window into a cohesive social network it is our sense. Condition: morocco binding has moderate to heavy wear along edges some scuffs on the boards and spine. The leaves can have a waviness the result of the interaction of the mounted material upon the leaves. A few photos are loose. There is a little bit of a scrappy quality to the book as befitting a log book that was partially turned into something much more and this quality is part of its charm as well.

books‎
