A topographer and mountaineer Wheeler conducted various government surveys in the Rockies the Selkirks Alaska and the Yukon served as one of the commissioners on the Alberta-British Columbia boundary from 1913 to 1925 and founded the Alpine Club of Canada in 1906 serving as its first president until 1910. Part I of the present work gives an account of a topographical survey of a portion of the Selkirks adjacent to the Canadian Pacific Railway line while parts II-IV provide a review of the previous travel and exploration surveys and mountaineering in the region there is a separate chapter on lady mountaineers.
