Während der 20er Jahre wurde das Stadion zum Bestandteil des 'Deutschen Sportforums', 1934 begann ihr raumgreifender Ausbau zum 'Reichssportfeld', der 'zentralen Kampfstätte der XI. Olympischen Sommerspiele'. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg hatte die britische Schutzmacht auf dem Gelände ihr Hauptquartier. Neben dem 'Reichsparteitagsgelände' in Nürnberg verkörpert wohl kaum ein Bauwerk deutlicher die Intentionen der Architektur im Nationalsozialismus. Le 13 mars 1938, Hitler proclamait le rattachement de l'Autriche au Reich et, deux jours plus tard, faisait son entrée dans la capitale danubienne. Ces événements sont connus, et plus encore les photos qui les illustrent : douaniers autrichiens accueillant les soldats de la Wehrmacht, foule acclamant le Führer au coeur de Vienne. Le 10 avril suivant, par plébiscite, 99, 75 % des Autrichiens approuvaient l'Anschluss. Mais pourquoi ne dit-on jamais que les célèbres photos de 1938 ont été orchestrées par la propagande nazie ? Et pourquoi n'expose-t-on jamais l'autre face du décor ? Le désarroi de la petite République d'Autriche créée en 1918 sur les décombres de la monarchie des Habsbourg et l'attraction exercée par l'Allemagne, dans les années 1920, sur tous les courants politiques autrichiens représentés au Parlement, à commencer par les socialistes. Le combat de l'Etat autrichien contre le national-socialisme intérieur et extérieur, de 1933 à 1938, combat mené aussi par le régime autoritaire institué en 1934. En 1934 encore, la répression par l'armée autrichienne de la tentative de putsch nazi qui conduisit à l'assassinat du chancelier Dollfuss. Quatre ans plus tard, le sursaut du chancelier Schuschnigg qui voulut consulter les Autrichiens par référendum sur leur volonté de préserver l'indépendance de leur pays, consultation prévue le 13 mars 1938 et dont le résultat aurait sûrement été positif si Hitler, précisément, n'avait pas voulu en interdire la tenue en faisant envahir le pays par l'armée allemande, dans l'indifférence des démocraties occidentales. Ensuite le trucage du plébiscite nazi du 10 avril 1938, l'impitoyable destruction des attributs souverains de l'Autriche, la poursuite des opposants (70 000 arrestations lors de l'Anschluss), le règne de la terreur et la persécution des juifs. Et enfin la résistance autrichienne en exil ou intérieure - résistance communiste et socialiste, résistance catholique, résistance conservatrice et monarchiste -, résistance méconnue, qui eut ses héros et ses martyrs. L'Autriche, libérée par les Alliés en 1945 et redevenue souveraine en 1955, se relèvera grâce à des hommes ayant survécu aux camps nazis. Jean Sévillia, fin connaisseur de l'Autriche et de son histoire, et fort de sources en grande partie inédites, brise les idées reçues et rend justice à cette Autriche qui, très tôt, a dit non à Hitler."‎
