Il tempo è l'estate del '44, pochi giorni prima dello sbarco alleato in Normandia. Il luogo, una cittadina della Francia centrale. Resistenti, popolazione civile, miliziani e tedeschi sono i personaggi del dramma. La liberazione sembra ormai vicina, e i partigiani decidono di anticiparla occupando Saint-Armand-Montrond. La reazione del governo di Vichy e dei tedeschi è immediata. Si innesca così il meccanismo implacabile della cattura di ostaggi, delle trattative inconcludenti e delle rappresaglie: un tragico braccio di ferro di cui fanno le spese soprattutto i civili, una lotta fratricida che avrà un esito catastrofico. Da tale successione di azioni e reazioni, narrata con assoluta verità documentaria, Todorov fa emergere una inquietante esemplarità. Nell'idealismo e nell'assolutismo dei fratelli nemici c'è un medesimo «stile», dettato da un'«etica della convinzione anziché da un'«etica della responsabilità», da una «morale del sacrificio» e non dalla «morale del rischio». Quest'ultima, semmai, è assunta da alcuni civili che si fanno mediatori tra le parti avverse, più preoccupati delle sofferenze e della sorte delle persone reali e concrete che non dei principi astratti. Alla fine, il senso profondo della messinscena allestita da Todorov non è quello dei fatti, ma quello delle posizioni etiche assunte, nelle convulsioni della storia, dagli esseri umani: vittime e carnefici, testimoni e protagonisti, eroi e vigliacchi.

Ben pochi riuscirono a scorgere nella sua visione del mondo - improntata alla conquista dello «spazio vitale a est» e all'eliminazione degli ebrei dalla Germania e, se possibile, dall'Europa intera - i germi dei tragici sviluppi futuri. Eppure, con l'attacco all'Unione Sovietica nel giugno 1941 e l'ingresso in guerra degli Stati Uniti nello stesso anno, le sorti della Germania nazista iniziarono a cambiare. Volker Ullrich dedica questo secondo volume della sua imponente ricerca agli anni più terribili nella storia del Terzo Reich, quelli dominati dalla smania di conquista di un dittatore che, del tutto impreparato al compito di comandante e stratega, se ne arrogò le funzioni e pianificò le operazioni con i suoi generali, fino ai minimi dettagli. L'autore rivolge quindi particolare attenzione ai rapporti fra Hitler e l'élite della Wehrmacht, cercando di chiarire in quale misura lo stato maggiore fosse coinvolto nelle decisioni più rilevanti e quali iniziative intraprese per favorirle o, eventualmente, ostacolarle. È in quelle occasioni che i tratti chiave della personalità del Führer emergono con più evidenza. Hitler era un giocatore d'azzardo e al tempo stesso era profondamente insicuro; bastava la minima battuta d'arresto per turbarlo ed era pronto a incolpare i suoi subordinati per i propri errori catastrofici; e quando si rese conto che la guerra era persa, si imbarcò nell'annientamento della stessa Germania come punizione del popolo tedesco che non gli aveva consegnato la vittoria. L'opera di Ullrich offre dunque uno spaccato affascinante sulla personalità del Führer, sondando gli abissi del suo carattere, quei complessi, quelle ossessioni e quelle spinte omicide che erano all'origine dei suoi pensieri e delle sue azioni, poiché, senza un'opportuna messa a fuoco del ruolo nefasto che esercitò, né il corso della guerra né la via verso l'Olocausto troverebbero una descrizione e una spiegazione adeguate. È difficile pensare a una biografia definitiva di Hitler - l'argomento è troppo vasto, l'uomo troppo contraddittorio e le fonti ingovernabili - ma queste pagine si avvicinano quanto più possibile a tale traguardo.

È stato condotto uno studio sulle cause dei delitti commessi da Hitler e dai suoi gerarchi ipotizzando che tali cause fossero dovute ad una disfunzione biologica a carico di alcune cellule speciali, i neuroni specchio, scoperti dal prof. Giacomo Rizzolatti e collaboratori negli anni '90. La disfunzione di questi ultimi è da far risalire ad una carenza di serotonina in circolo, a sua volta in rapporto ad una dieta vegetariana, che non consente di fornire, sufficientemente, il precursore di questa catecolamina, il triptofano. La serotonina, infatti, secondo gli studi di P.D. MacLean, autore della celebre teoria del cervello uno e trino, ha la funzione di coordinare ed integrare le attività delle formazioni cerebrali. Una sua carenza causa, tra l'altro, mancanza di empatia, aggressività, misticismo: tutte prerogative presenti in Hitler.
