‎WATERLOO - UXBRIDGE, Henry William Paget, first earl of.‎

‎Album including two autograph letters signed giving a detailed commentary on the Waterloo campaign; and three from the Duke of Wellington to Sir Alexander Allan concerning East India Company and parliamentary affairs.‎

‎1806-45. They "succeeded to the utmost & overthrew every thing" - Uxbridge and the "heavies" at Waterloo In two lengthy letters that crackle with character and detail Lord Uxbridge the future Marquess of Anglesey commander of allied cavalry during the Waterloo campaign discusses the withdrawal from Quatre Bras and the day of Waterloo itself. Written within six months of the battle these are perhaps Uxbridge's earliest accounts. Such autograph material by any of the Allied commanders is vanishingly rare. Uxbridge 1768-1854 had been Sir John Moore's brilliant and inspiring commander of cavalry in the Peninsular War. However Wellington "disliked 'clever' cavalry officers Â… and For the Waterloo campaign Â… would have preferred the more experienced but plodding Lord Combermere. Yet Uxbridge was thrust on him by the prince regent and the duke of York" ODNB. At Waterloo his high-water mark came at perhaps the most critical moment of the battle: Picton's allied infantry was threatened by overwhelming numbers and Uxbridge threw himself into action organizing the British heavy cavalry and personally leading two brigades. "Thus 2000 'heavies' swept 15000 French soldiers in wild disorder before them destroying two field batteries and taking more than 2000 prisoners and two eagles. The enemy's casualties numbered about 4500 but the cavalry lost 700 men and 900 horses" ibid. During the rest of the battle Uxbridge was constantly on the move galloping from unit to unit - he had eight or nine horses shot from under him - leading numerous counter-attacks rallying and cajoling. Then as the battle was ending and with night coming on his right knee was shattered by a grapeshot that had passed over the neck of Wellington's horse. In one of the most famous exchanges of that day it is claimed that he remarked "By God sir I've lost my leg!" to which Wellington coolly replied "By God sir so you have!" Uxbridge was removed from the field and carried three miles to Waterloo to be treated. During the amputation he showed remarkable sang froid and the severed limb - "the most celebrated of the thousands of legs sawn off at Waterloo" Howarth p. 246 - was with Uxbridge's permission placed in a purpose-built coffin and buried by the canny Belgian house owner. A weeping willow and plaque marked the burial spot in his garden and future generations were charged a few centimes to view it. "Within three weeks Uxbridge was back in London. Later the first articulated artificial limb ever devised - the 'Anglesey leg' - was fitted to his stump. On 4 July he was created marquess of Anglesey" ODNB. John Morewood quotes from both letters in his Waterloo General: The Life Letters and Mysterious Death of Major General Sir William Ponsonby 1772-1815 2016; and they are cited by Edward Owen in The Waterloo Paper: 1815 and Beyond 1997. Owen identifies the recipient as Colonel James Allan of the 57th Foot who followed Fitzroy Somerset as military secretary to Wellington. Allan joined the regiment as an ensign in 1795 and as a lieutenant was present at the capture of the Cape of Good Hope in that year. He was at the storming of Seringapatam in 1799 and served in the Peninsular from 1810 until the end of the war. Written in December 1815 from Uxbridge's home at Beaudesert Staffordshire the letters are addressed to "My dear Sir" the earlier signed off to "My dear Colonel".  In the first 10-pages 9 December Uxbridge discusses his actions on the day before Waterloo when he covered the Anglo-allied withdrawal from the bruising encounter at Quatre Bras. He writes: "All was quiet until 1 p.m. when a very large body of the Enemies Cavalry & Artillery made its appearance upon the high ground on the left of Quatre Bras & which had come from the pursuit of the Prussians defeated at Ligny. After a short pause it advanced & the necessary dispositions having been made & the light Battalions withdrawn the Cavalry began its retreat in 3 Columns over the River Genappe". He goes on to describe the cavalry action at Genappe as the harrying French troops "became so troublesome that it was necessary to check their impetuosity. For this purpose our Hussars were ordered to attack their Advanced Guard consisting of Lancers & a very spirited attack being soon after made by the Life Guards. It had the desired effect. The Enemy now brought up Cannon & deployed. They attempted to move up our right flank but this effort was effectually foiled by the well executed movements of Sir W. Ponsonby's Brigade & the heavy state of the ground making it by this time obvious that the Enemy cd not gain our flank". The second letter 9-pages 18 December covers the day of Waterloo itself Uxbridge opening his remarks by commenting "I wish I cd furnish you with what you want for the 18th but I feel if I undertook it as if I shd be writing a history of my own exploits! I will however just mark the Return of the Cavalry operations". He then goes on to describe the famous charge of the British heavy cavalry: "The most destructive attack was made perhaps about 2 o'ck. upon 2 very large masses of Infantry & Cavalry that tried to force our Center. I ordered Sir W. Ponsonby that most gallant officer & excellent fellow to fall upon them with his Brigade nearly at the same moment when I took down Ld Ed Somerset with the Household Brigade for the same purpose. Both succeeded to the utmost & overthrew every thing before them. 2 Eagles & above 2500 prisoners were taken in their Charges. They overthrew the Cavalry & penetrated into the squares of Infantry & really destroyed an immense number of men. They followed too far & suffered most severely principally from the enemys Artillery". He goes on to mention the actions of brigade commanders Sir Wilhelm von Dörnberg Sir Colquhoun Grant and Colonel Friedrich von Arentsschildt as well as those of Sir Ormsby Vandeleur who succeeded Uxbridge after he was wounded and Sir Hussey Vivian whose hussars made the final charge of the day arriving "at the critical moment when the enemy were giving way in all directions & they attacked with great vigour & did them great mischief". He concludes by saying that "if you want more interesting details & individual exploits I know no one to whom you can better apply that to my Aid de Camp Captn Wildman of the 7th who has heard all the stories & will not object to telling them. He is at Steven's Bond St."; this is a reference to Captain Thomas Wildman a copy of whose long detailed letter about the battle is held at the National Army Museum and Stevens's Hotel fashionable with army officers and men about town a popular haunt of Lord Byron an old Harrow friend of Wildman. Also present is a note dated 17 January 1816 from FitzRoy Somerset Wellington's military secretary at Waterloo a Peninsula veteran and the future Lord Raglan; he gives allied numbers engaged in the battle and remarks in his covering letter "I hope it will be as useful to you as you are welcome to it". This is also reproduced by Owen in The Waterloo Papers. At Waterloo around the time that Uxbridge sustained his injury Somerset was hit in the right elbow by a musket ball and showed similar self-possession during the amputation. He remains best known for his command of British forces in the Crimea. The three Wellington letters are addressed to his old India associate Sir Alexander Allan first baronet c.1764-1820 who had distinguished himself during the Mysore Wars with the Madras infantry particularly at the storming of Seringapatam in which Wellington then Colonel Arthur Wellesley played a major part. He may be related to the Colonel James Allan the putative recipient of the Uxbridge letters. They are dated 1806 1814 and 1820 the period when Allan was MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed. The earliest concerns actions brought by the nabob James Paull against Wellington's brother Richard Wellesley governor-general of Bengal; that of 1814 relates to Allan seeking a position as a director of the East India Company Wellington remarking that Sir Hudson Lowe "has informed me of your having become a candidate for a vacancy" and that "I sincerely hope that if you should think it in my power to be of any use to you in attaining your object you will let me know it. I wish you success not only from the Regard which I have always felt for you but from the conviction which I feel that from your knowledge & experience in the affairs of India & your other good qualities you are better qualified than anybody I know to be of use in superintending the Govt of a Country for which I shall always feel an Interest". The third letter is dated "Private & confidential London March 17th 1820" and in it Wellington requests Allan's influence at "India House" headquarters of the EIC during the general election of that year: "We are very anxious respecting the Middlesex Election & we know that there is a good deal of Interest in the India House of one kind or other Â… I need not tell you what an acceptable service you would render if you can Detour this Interest in the right channel". In a rather delightful and surprisingly candid undated 3-page letter to Allan Catherine Duchess of Wellington expresses her love for her husband: "When he was only Arthur Wesley his original name years before he was considered as he now is before his greatness was even suspected I loved him with all my heart and soul! And I have loved him straight on from the time I first knew him I was then 15 to the present hour". She then implores Allan to allow her to keep a portrait of the Duke that he has apparently lent her "the Prize that I have so unfairly and so violently wrested from you". Possibly a portrait by Allan paper watermarked 1812; front panel of envelope addressed to Allan at Baker Street retained. Another 2-page letter from the Duchess concerns Allan's bid for a position on the Directory of the EIC; she opens "I am very happy to assure you that I received such favourable answers to all my applications that I only regret that I was not acquainted with every voter for the Directory" presumably dates to some time in 1814 after Wellington had been raised to the peerage and Allan was seeking a directorship at the EIC; paper watermarked 1812; front panel of envelope addressed to Allan present. Sir Alexander Allan first Baronet c. 1764-1820 joined the East India Company as a cadet in 1779 and served as a captain in the Madras Army during the Third and Fourth Mysore Wars 1790-1792 and 1798-1799. In the latter he acted as deputy quartermaster general. Like a number of officers of the period he was an accomplished draughtsman; in 1794 a series of 20 aquatints were made from his drawings and published by him as Views in the Mysore Country. Subsequently he served as MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed and from 1814 until his death as a director of the East India Company. According to George Pellew Allan "ranked high in Lord Richard Wellesley's confidence and esteem" Pellew III p. 107. Of the remaining nine letters three are from Allan and dated 26 July 1813 a day of heightened political activity that centred on the final parliamentary separation of George Canning and Richard Wellesley. In a 2-page letter to Viscount Sidmouth he writes: "I cannot help flattering myself that the hope I have long cherished will now be realized and that I shall see Lord Wellesley a member of the same cabinet with your lordship. You are united in friendship and ought to be in politics" reprinted in Pellew's life of Sidmouth and Allan's entry in The History of Parliament online. Similar sentiments are expressed in 2-page letters to Robert Hobart fourth earl of Buckinghamshire to whom Allan served as an aide when Hobart was governor of Madras 1793-1798; and Hobart's brother-in-law John Sullivan MP and colonial administrator in India. 2-page letter February 1809 to Allan from the Marquis de Montalembert 177-1831 giving details of campaigning in the Peninsula during the winter of 1808-09 by generals Robert Craufurd - "unquestionably the finest commander of light troops who served in the Peninsula" ODNB - and William Carr Beresford. Montalembert was an émigré French nobleman serving as an officer in the British army; in 1814 he seems to have acted as a messenger carrying dispatches to and from Wellington and is described in a letter from Edward Cooke Lord Castlereagh's secretary at the Foreign office as "a clever man and a good officer and intelligent" Wellington's Supplementary Despatches VIII p. 733. 3-page letter 12 April 1816 to Allan from Sir William Knighton 1776-1836 courtier and physician a protégé of Sir Richard Wellesley apparently concerning the death of Allan's mother addressed from Hanover Square where Knighton had his practice. Warm 1-page letter signed "von Kuefstein" in French dated from Vienna; possibly Johann Ferdinand von Kuefstein III 1753-1818 to an unnamed recipient mentioning the despatch of letters to him at Genoa and their mutual friend "dear Captain Cotton" presumably Edward Antonius Cotton RA 1788-1846 who was present at the capture of the islands of the Ischia and Procida 1809 and siege of Genoa 1814. The recipient may be the diplomatist William Noel-Hill third Baron Berwick British Minister at Genoa and envoy to Sardinia from 1807 to 1824 the Republic of Genoa was annexed by Sardinia in 1815. 3-page letter Stuttgart 6 February 1820 to Allan from recounting the current situation in Wurttemberg regretting the departure of "Mr. Wagner" from London Jean-Emile de Wagner temporary charge d'affaire 1814-20 remarking that Wagner was his ADC "in the Campaigns of 14 and 15" and that his replacement is "too much of a Beau - or Dandy as you call it in English". 2-page letter 10 October 1842 from John Palfrey Burrell 1773-1859 barrister to "My dear Fitzgerald" "You were so kind as to say some time ago that you would again lend me the Prussian account of the campaign in Flanders which contains the original Bulletin of the battle of Waterloo in German" and going on to remark that the "publication in The Quarterly Review of an article of Blucher had revived the interest in the details of that extraordinary battle". Burrell was editor of Official Bulletins of the Battle of Waterloo in the Original Languages with Translations into English 1849. 2-page letter 8 August 1845 from William Boone to a Thomas Fitzgerald: "Capn Siborne has been with me again and says that he will be greatly obliged if you can favour him with a sight of the correspondence alluded to in the Journal as there are many points which although not material in themselves affect or lead to important results and the captain considers the Journal and the letters of too much authority not to be very deeply considered." Captain William Siborne 1797-1849 remains best known for his painstaking model of the battle of Waterloo which was publicly exhibited and is now held by the National Army Museum. Boone 1790-1873 was the publisher of Siborne's History of the War in France and Belgium in 1815 1844. The Fitzgerald mentioned in the above two letters may be Major Edward Thomas Fitzgerald 1784-1845 who began his military career as a cornet with the 20th Dragoons in 1804 before transferring to the infantry and serving with the 101st 25th and 12thFoot; at Waterloo he was wounded while acting as assistant deputy quartermaster general. He died on 19 September 1845. Provenance: bookplate of Otto Orren Fisher 1881-1961 who after studying medicine at Johns Hopkins became an industrial surgeon for the Hudson Motor Company in Detroit establishing one of the first modern industrial first aid units there; he amassed a notable and extensive library of books and manuscripts which included all four Shakespeare folios. Folio 300 x 245 mm. Black half morocco-grain skiver album green pebble-grain cloth boards linen hinged mounting leaves; contains an archive of 17 letters 55 pp. various sizes letters gummed direct to the leaf or with paper tape. Expected folds and minor toning to most letters generally very good the volume presenting handsomely.
