‎AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY GENERAL SIR FREDERICK WILLIAM HAMILTON COMMANDER OF THE BRIGADE OF GUARDS FROM 1868 to 1870 SENDING A REVIEW OF HIS BOOK ON THE GRENADIER GUARDS.‎

Good. - Letter penned in black ink and filling both sides of a cream-colored 7 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of letterhead with his address printed in red raised lettering at the top of the recto. Signed "Fred. Hamilton". The left edge of the letter is reinforced with linen tape. Hamilton's name & the title of his book have been noted in another hand below his signature. Folded once for mailing. Together with a newspaper cutting of his obituary. Good. <p>General Hamilton writes to Mrs. Ford: "I leave a copy of the morning's which you can return at your convenience containing a review of my book. I hope you have recovered from the heat of yesterday". The book published in London by John Murray in 1874 is "The Origin and History of the First or Grenadier Guards. From Documents in the State Paper Office War Office Horse Guards Contemporary History Regimental Records Etc.".<p>General Sir Frederick William Hamilton 1815-1890 was a British Army officer who was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1831. He commanded his regiment throughout the Eastern campaign of the Crimean War including the Battle of Alma the Battle of Balaklava the Siege of Sebastopol and the Battle of Inkerman where he was wounded and had his horse shot out from under him. He then served as Major General commanding the Brigade of Guards from 1868 to 1870 before retiring with the rank of full general in July 1881. [London ]: July 12, 1874. unknown‎

Im Englischen Bürgerkrieg sammelte er 1648 ein Heer für Karl I. und fiel in England ein, wurde aber bei Preston von Cromwell geschlagen, gefangen und am 9. März 1649 in London enthauptet. - Außenränder leicht gebräunt, insgesamt gut erhalten.‎

Mit ihm beschäftigt sich seit 1994 die von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft finanzierte interdisziplinäre Würzburger Forschergruppe "Das Bild des Krieges im Wandel vom späten Mittelalter zur frühen Neuzeit". Der Ansatz der Forschergruppe richtet das Augenmerk nicht auf die "Realien" des Krieges (Waffentechnik, Ökonomie, Strategie und Technik) wie das die Kriegsforschung in Deutschland und im Ausland bislang getan hat, sondern versucht, die mit dem kriegerischen Geschehen verbundene Vorstellungswelt zu erforschen. Fiktionale Darstellungen, chronikalische Schilderungen, politische und rechtliche Selbstinterpretationen der Zeitgenossen, die Motivationen erkennen lassen, sind dafür die Quellen, die befragt werden. Der Begriff des "Bildes" wird daher in einem weiteren Sinne verstanden, er umfasst jede gedankliche Widerspiegelung und Reflexion des Phänomens "Krieg" in sprachlichen Quellen, mögen diese künstlerisch geformt oder Texterzeugnis kriegerischer Praxis sein, wie z.B. Kriegserklärungen, Briefe, Gutachten o.ä. Die parallele wissenschaftliche Untersuchung so unterschiedlicher Texte rechtfertigt sich gerade im Hinblick auf das Thema "Krieg" deshalb, weil die Vermutung naheliegt, dass auch die von den Zeitgenosssen selbst entwickelten Vorstellungen über den Krieg dessen "Wirklichkeit", die autobiographisch und sozial begründet sein dürfte und unterschiedlich erfahren wird, nicht zu erfassen vermochten. Der vorliegende Band enthält 16 Beiträge, die vorwiegend aus den Vorträgen einer im Oktober 1997 veranstalteten Tagung hervorgegangen sind. Die Autoren sind Historiker, Rechtshistoriker, Osteuropahistoriker und Altgermanisten. Der den Band eröffnende Aufsatz Gerd Althoffs befasst sich mit dem differenzierten Verhältnis zu Krieg und Gewalt in der Kriegsgesellschaft. In den Beiträgen Volker Schmidtchens, Karl-Heinz Zieglers, Elmar Wadles und Janine Fehn-Claus geht es um rechtliche Regelungen in Kriegsordnungen, um kriegsrechtliche Traktate sowie um das Verständnis der Fehde. Die Widerspiegelung von Kriegen in Chroniken und Dichtungen des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts stehen im Zentrum der Aufsätze Joachim Schneiders, Constantin Hruschkas, Volker Honemanns, Sonja Kerths und Werner Röckes. Dieter Mertens untersucht eine bildkünstlerische Darstellung des Schweizer und Schwabenkrieges. Die geistige Auseinandersetzung von Büchsenmeistern und Kriegshauptleuten mit dem Phänomen Krieg ist Thema einer Studie Rainer Lengs. Die Arbeiten Hieronim Gralas, Reinhard Frötschners und Markus Osterrieders befassen sich mit Kriegsanschauungen in Polen-Litauen und Rußland. Der abschließende Aufsatz Johannes Kunischs behandelt den Krieg als moralische Anstalt der deutschen Spätaufklärung.‎
