‎L'auteur, l'un des historiens anglais les plus scrupuleux de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, a reconstitué minutieusement l'histoire de l'aviation militaire allemande, à partir de la guerre 1914-1918. Il s'est surtout attaché à montrer comment la Luftwaffe a toujours pu subsister, grâce aux camouflages astucieux de son état-major, malgré les conditions draconiennes du traité de Versailles, puis à décrire sa triomphale montée dans l'appareil militaire du IIIe Reich, son rôle décisif dans les débuts de la guerre 39-45, sous l'impulsion (souvent démesurément exagérée) de Hermann Goering. Nous assistons aux bombardements foudroyants de 39-40, de la Pologne à Paris en passant par Amsterdam. Nous suivons ensuite la Luftwaffe dans la conquête de la Crête, dans l'épuisante Russie, dans la terrible bataille défensive des chasseurs de nuit contre les bombardements alliés. Nous apprenons un grand nombre de faits inconnus sur les derniers soubresauts avant la défaite, l'apparition des avions à réactions, les armes secrètes, etc. En soulignant "les gaffes monumentales finalement commises par les dirigeants nazis", le maréchal Sir John Slessor, de la R.A.F., assure dans sa préface que "Adolf Hitler, aidé des lumières de Goering, fut effectivement la meilleure des armes secrètes des alliés en matière de guerre aérienne".‎

Kryptographische Methoden zur geheimen Übermittlung von Nachrichten sind spätestens seit der Antike bekannt. Damit einher gingen natürlich auch immer die Versuche Dritter, diese Chiffren zu brechen. Beide Seiten dieser Medaille werden von Rudolf Kippenhahn in seinem Buch beschrieben. Der Astrophysiker unternimmt in Verschlüsselte Botschaften einen Parforceritt durch die Geschichte der Geheimnisse und des Verrats, von der Antike bis ins 20. Jahrhundert. Er schreibt, wie Caesar seine Briefe an Cicero verschlüsselte, daß Maria Stuart enthauptet wurde, weil ihre Gegner gute Kryptoanalytiker hatten und wie geniale Mathematiker durch das Brechen deutscher Codes dazu beitrugen, den Zweiten Weltkrieg zu verkürzen. Er erklärt aber auch, wie die ISBN zustande kommt, welches Geheimnis sich in unseren Kontonummern verbirgt und versucht, den Mann mit der eisernen Maske zu enttarnen. En passant lernt man, einfache Geheimtexte zu entschlüsseln und kann dies an eingestreuten Rätseln sofort ausprobieren. Mit den kurzweiligen Anekdoten illustriert der Autor kenntnisreich seine Analysen der versammelten kryptographischen Verfahren. Ein Kunstgriff, mit dem er die Leser gleichzeitig dezent darauf hinweist, daß die Verwendung von Kryptographie nicht per se Sicherheit bietet. Das scheint mir wichtig, ist doch die computergestützte Verschlüsselung längst zu einem Eckpfeiler unserer vernetzten Gesellschaft geworden. Kippenhahn belässt es denn auch nicht bei den historischen Chiffrierverfahren. Das letzte Drittel des Buches ist den aktuellen Techniken gewidmet, dem DES, den öffentlichen Schlüsseln und der Chipkarte. DES, der auch für die EC-Karten genutzte Data Encryption Standard, kommt dabei leider viel zu kurz. Das ist schade, da dieses wichtige und weitverbreitete Verfahren hinsichtlich seiner Sicherheit immer wieder kontrovers diskutiert wird. Den auf den ersten Blick paradoxen öffentlichen Schlüsseln widmet Kippenhahn dagegen ausreichend Platz und bespricht sogar das populäre Programm "pretty good privacy" (PGP), das mit öffentlichen Schlüsseln arbeitet. PGP bleibt jedoch die einzig vorgestellte Software -- der Autor umgeht damit die Gefahr, daß sein Buch schnell veraltet. Verschlüsselte Botschaften ist keine hektisch geschriebene "Internet-Publikation". Es ist ein gemütliches Buch in gediegener Ausstattung, das Gültigkeit behält über die Dauer von Programmversionen hinaus.
