First edition, 8vo (203 x 125 mm), [4], vii, [1 errata], 152p., with half-title, engraved frontispiece, some light spotting, cont. calf, re-backed, corners re-newed, morocco spine label lettered in gilt, ruled in gilt. George Montagu (1753?1815), English army officer and naturalist. In 1770 he joined the army as an Ensign in the 15th Regiment of Foot and In December 1775 George was promoted to the rank of Captain on the same day that the regiment was ordered to America. He resigned his commission as a Captain in 1777, but eventually rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Wiltshire Militia. This, his first publication, is little known and is rare, he is better known for his pioneering two-volume Ornithological Dictionary; or Alphabetical Synopsis of British Birds of 1802, which for the first time accurately defined the status of Britain's birds. He is remembered today for species such as the Montagu's harrier, named for him. ESTC locating 3 UK copies (BL, Cambridge and St. Andrews), with just 1 copy located in North America (Smithsonian).

Cover: red cloth with gilt titles and boar head design to front cover/ gilt titles and trim. Mild soiling light rubbing and faint marks to cover. Thin bumping/ light rubbed wear spots to head & foot of spine and to corners. Moderate foxing and soiling to edges. Ffep & frontispiece loose from binding also sprinkling of foxing. Sprinkling of light foxing to a few pages margins. One set of illustrated page conjugate and loose from binding. One illustrated page with 10cm closed tear to head edge. All fldg charts and Illustrations clean & intact. Only a few pages with very faint few only foxing to margins otherwise quite clean content. Binding tight. 370p Heavybook: 29 x 23 x 6.5cm Second volume is a case for maps: cover: slightly faded red gilt titles and trim with boar head to front cover. Moderate soiling rubbing. Thin bumping and some wear to head of spine and lightly to bottom. Small bumping and moderate wear to corners. Mild rubbed wear to some of the extremeties. Maps: 19 coloured maps: coloured section quite clean with a faint touch of foxing to margins. Couple of maps number corner with small tear. 4 panoramic b/w photographs mostly clean with a little chips & rough edges however all completely intact. 8vo., First Edition, with fine portrait frontispiece and 65 plates and maps (a number full-page) on 39; handsomely bound in full dark green crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second and fourth compartments lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, gilt top, hand-made endpapers, ribbon marker, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. One of the key military memoirs of the twentieth century, this is as much an autobiography as a soldier's account of war. Written entirely by 'Monty' himself (in pencil, as so many of his official communications were composed), this characteristically straightforward (and often politically outspoken) account covers boyhood, early service with the Warwickshires, WWII and beyond (notably, about a third of the work covers his post-war career as CIGS and after). For technical military detail we look to the author's other works; here we find the simple account of a 'soldier who kept the faith'. A great read from one of the unforgettable leaders of his times.
