‎Experiment in Germany --- Als die amerikanischen Truppen im Oktober 1944 von Belgien aus nach Deutschland vorstießen, folgte den ersten Panzern ein unbewaffneter Offizier, der perfekt Deutsch sprach. Sein Auftrag war es zu erforschen, was in den Köpfen der Besiegten vorging. "Ich komme mir vor wie ein Ethnologe", sagte er sich, "der in das Gebiet eines unbekannten Stammes eindringt." Seine Absicht war es nicht in erster Linie, die Nazis zu entlarven. Das war nicht nötig. Den kollektiven Wahn der Deutschen betrachtet er mit erstaunlicher Sachlichkeit. Dabei kam ihm zugute, dass die Deutschen noch keine Zeit gefunden hatten, sich komplizierte Ausreden zurechtzulegen. Die Zeit der Verdrängungen und Deckerinnerungen war noch nicht gekommen. Seine Probanden waren vielfältig. Von der Bauerntochter bis zum Industriellen, vom Bischof bis zum Zwangsarbeiter, vom Nazibonzen bis zum kommunistischen Arbeiter hat er keine Schicht ausgelassen. Die Auskünfte zeugen von Mut und von kollektiver Depression, von Sel bstmitleid und unbelehrbarer Arroganz. Auch von den politischen Auseinandersetzungen innerhalb der Militärregierung berichtet Padover und von den ersten Regungen einer deutschen Selbstverwaltung. Sein Bericht war einflussreich. Eisenhower hat sein frühes Plädoyer für eine zukunftsorientierte Deutschlandpolitik zu Rate gezogen und beherzigt. Es dürfte kein Zufall sein, dass diese wichtige Quelle nie ins Deutsche übersetzt worden ist. Auch nach einem halben Jahrhundert hat Padovers Bericht von seiner Brisanz nichts verloren. ‎February 6th 1847. 1847. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling almost 3 sides of a sheet of light gray paper folded once to form 4 sides approximately 7-1/4 inches high by 4-5/8 inches wide. The letter has been mounted on a lightly larger sheet of cream-colored stiff paper. Signed "Anglesey" There are a few small ink smudges to the 2nd & 3rd sides. Very good. <p>The letter is addressed to Scottish geologist Sir Roderick Murchison and concerns a publication which Murchison is proposing and how it would be funded. "Some Estimate of the probable cost of money and of time is called for from General Colby and when it is received you shall again hear from me." The reference is probably to General Thomas Frederic Colby a leading geographer who had been director of the Ordnance Survey.<p>Henry Paget 1st Marquess of Anglesey 1768-1854 was a British army officer and politician. After serving as Member of Parliament for Carnarvon and then for Milborne Port he took part in the Flanders Campaign. During the Peninsula War he commanded the cavalry for Sir John Moore's army in Spain and at the Battle of Sahagun virtually destroyed a regiment of French cavalry. He led the charge of the heavy cavalry against Comte d'Erlon's column at the Battle of Waterloo losing part of one of his legs to a cannonball at the end of the battle. In later life he served as Master-General of Ordnance from 1846 to 1852.<p>The Scottish geologist Sir Roderick sometimes as here spelled "Rhoderick" Impey Murchison 1st Baronet 1792-1871 was the first to describe and investigate the Silurian system. During the last decade of his life he chiefly investigated the Highlands of Scotland. Murchison was one of the founders and a president of the Royal Geographical Society and served on the Royal Commission on the British Museum. In 1855 he was appointed director-general of the British Geological Survey and director of the Royal School of Mines and the Museum of Practical Geology in Jermyn Street London. ‎1. 1772-1796.– 2. 1797-1811.– 3. 1812-1844 — Le rarissime Atlas de 8 cartes manque, mais l'auteur donne les numéros des cartes de Reymann qui peuvent servir aux détails des campagnes de Pajol. — Pierre Claude Pajol - né « Pajot » le 3 février 1772 à Besançon, mort le 20 mars 1844 à Paris, fut une grande figure de la cavalerie légère de Napoléon Ier. A la bataille de Montereau, le 18 février 1814, la charge épique des cavaliers de Pajol décide du sort de la journée ; le soir, Napoléon déclare au héros : « Si tous mes généraux m'avaient servi comme vous, l'ennemi ne serait pas en France ». Né en 1772 à Besançon et destiné d'abord au barreau, Pajol s'engage en 1791 dans un bataillon de volontaires : ainsi commence son ascension fulgurante, pendant laquelle il cueillira de nouveaux grades et d'innombrables blessures, ne cédant en rien sur ce dernier point à son futur beau-père Oudinot. Aide de camp de Kléber en 1794 à l'armée de Sambre-et-Meuse, il passe au 4ème hussards comme chef d'escadron, puis devient chef de brigade (colonel) du 6ème régiment de cette arme en 1799. Jusqu'en 1807, Pajol n'a pas la chance de participer aux grandes batailles de l'Empire, mais il se rattrapera bientôt : nommé général de brigade en mars 1807 et placé dans la division Lasalle, il se distinguera à Guttstadt et Heilsberg. En 1809, faisant partie de la division Montbrun, sa brigade fournira des charges à Eckmühl, Ratisbonne et Wagram. Pendant l'expédition de Russie, Pajol commandera l'avant-garde du corps d'armée de Davout, sera nommé général de division et chargera à La Moskova, mais il sera grièvement blessé deux jours plus tard... Remis en selle en 1813, il sera de nouveau blessé à Wachau en octobre. De sa participation à la campagne de France en 1814, on retiendra surtout sa brillante charge à Montereau. En 1815, après avoir combattu à Ligny, Pajol marchera avec Grouchy : par conséquent, il ne sera pas présent à Waterloo. Grâce à sa parenté avec le maréchal Oudinot, il pourra résider en France sous la Restauration ; cependant, ses convictions bonapartistes le pousseront à prendre la tête des insurgés parisiens pendant la marche sur Rambouillet contre Charles X en 1830. Choyé par le nouveau régime de Louis-Philippe, qui en fera pair de France et grand-croix de la Légion d'honneur, Pajol s'éteindra à Paris en 1844. Le récit est très circonstancié et décrit minutieusement toutes les opérations militaires auxquelles Pajol avait participé tout au long de sa carrière, avec force détails intéressants, des guerres de la 1ère République jusqu'à la révolution de 1830.‎

‎MacDill Air Force Base FL: February 12 1973. 1973. Very good. - Palmer's lengthy 2-1/2 page letter is typed on a cream-colored 10-1/2 inch high by 8 inch wide sheet of United States Readiness Command letterhead with the address & the Department of Defense seal printed at the top and on 2 follow-up sheets. Printed at the foot of the letterhead are the words "Readiness.Key to Peace". Signed "Bruce Palmer Jr". The sheets are lightly bumped & stapled together at top right. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. <p>Palmer replies to a letter from Congressman Seymour Halpern asking him for his thoughts on how to achieve a lasting world peace. Palmer writes a long and thoughtful letter giving his views on the subject and considering the problems and challenges ahead. "The means of achieving this goal are several. First and foremost is to maintain strength and stability in our own domestic economy and political system. Secondly in the realization that we cannot go it alone-- economically politically or militarily--is the need for collective security enhancing our own security through collective arrangements with other nations. Our moral economic political and military strength and leadership have played the key role in the collective security of the Free World for more than twenty-five years."<p>Bruce Palmer Jr. 1913-2000 served in the United States Army from 1936 to 1974. From 1967-68 he was commander of II Field Force Vietnam and deputy commander of the United States Army Vietnam. He was acting Chief of Staff of the United States Army from July to October 1972 and from 1973 until his retirement he was commander in chief of the United States Readiness Command.<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously.
