Rough Sketches of the Life of an Old Soldier: During a Service in the West Indies; at the Siege of Copenhagen in 1807; in the Peninsula and the South of France in the Campaigns From 1808 to 1814 With the Light Division; in the Netherlands in 1815; Including the Battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo: With a Slight Sketch of the Three Years Passes By the Army of Occupation in France &c. &c. &c.
n the Peninsula and the South of France in the Campaigns From 1808 to 1814 With the Light Division; in the Netherlands in 1815; Including the Battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo: With a Slight Sketch of the Three Years Passes By the Army of Occupation in France &c. &c. &c. 1831 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A nicely bound fist edition of Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Leach's first hand account of the Light Division's campaigns during the Peninsular Wars. The first edition of this work and very scarce. This work is an octavo. Bound without half-title. During his years of service the author always kept a daily journal in which he noted his experiences and the matters occurring around him. He used these journals alongside notes and memoranda to put together this account. The work recounts the Peninsular War during which the author fought in the south of France in campaigns from 1808 to 1814. During this time the author was with the Light Division. The Light Division was formed in 1803 during the Napoleonic Wars and so this memoir offers first hand experience into the newly formed light infantry division at an interesting and turbulent time for the division. The author offers here an unbroken narrative; almost every scene recounted in this work was one to which the author was an eyewitness. For the other scenes the author became acquainted with from the log-books of his brother-officers. Written by Lieutenant-Colonel Jonathan Leach who was of the Rifle Brigade and of the 70th Regiment. This is Leach's only known published work. Pencil inscription to the verso to the front endpaper 'EX LIBRIS C. A. D'. From the library of Colin and Joan Deacon. The first edition of this memoir of a Lieutenant-Colonel's experiences in the Peninsular War. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally smart. Some minor marks to the boards. A couple of light patches of rubbing to the spine. Pencil inscription to the verso to the front endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot. Overall Condition: Near Fine. n the Peninsula and the South of France in the Campaigns From 1808 to 1814, With the Light Division; in the Netherlands in 1815; hardcover
