‎Édition originale française rare de ce texte majeur de réflexion militaire. L'originale allemande parut à Berlin en 1833 en deux volumes. Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831) est un excellent exemple, très représentatif, de ces officiers prussiens qui ont commencé leur carrière dans une Prusse un peu endormie, assez oublieuse des leçons du grand Frédéric, en tout cas avant le choc de la campagne de 1806, et qui apprirent l'essentiel de leur science militaire au contact de la tactique napoléonienne : entré en 1792 comme porte-enseigne dans le régiment d'infanterie du Prince Ferdinand, le jeune Clausewitz fit les campagnes du Rhin de 1793 et 1794 ; son séjour de deux ans à l'École militaire de Berlin (1801-1803) lui permit de devenir aide-de-camp du prince Auguste de Prusse, qu'il accompagna durant la désastreuse campagne de 1806. Fait prisonnier par les Français, à la suite de la capitulation de Prenzlow, il entra après sa captivité dans l'état-major général, où il travailla dans les bureaux du général Scharnhorst, son ancien maître de l'École militaire. Lors de la campagne de Russie, il demanda un congé pour entrer au service d'Alexandre Ier, et, après avoir obtenu un commandement dans l'armée russe, fut employé, à la demande du général Yorck de Wartenburg, dans la négociation de l'armistice de Tauroggen. Il ne continua pas moins à servir la Russie pendant la campagne de 1813, et ne fut rendu au service de la Prusse qu'en 1815, après avoir formé la Légion russo-allemande qui se joignit au corps de Wallmoden dans le Mecklembourg.
