‎Endorsing a voucher of payment for a group of laborers on the Memphis & Charleston Rail Road signed July 1862 "Jas. B. McPherson Brig Genl & Supt."‎

‎Partly printed form 8 1/2 x 14 inches completed in a clerical hand and signed by McPherson; the form was printed for the Mobile & Ohio Railroad the notation for the "Memphis & Charleston R.R." added in manuscript and was also signed by a foreman and seven laborers for completed work. An Ohio native McPherson finished first in West Point's class of 1853 and served in the Corps of Engineers until the outbreak of war. His meteoric rise took him from lieutenant of engineers in August 1861 to the command of a division in October 1862; along the way he served as Grant's chief engineer superintendent of railroads in West Tennessee and as a brigade commander. He commanded a corps at Vicksburg and Sherman's Army of the Tennessee in the Atlanta campaign where he was killed 22 July 1864. "Sherman's tears rolled through his beard and down on the floor when he viewed the body of his friend laid upon a door torn from its hinges and improvised as a bier" Generals in Blue. Blue-coloured softcovers w/ Acco-fastener post-binding at gutter margin several sections on very acidic wartime paper w/ uniform toning others with light toning still a VG exemplar from the library of Corporal Arthur H. Mills who served w/ Army Air Corps Heavy Bomber group was shot down in 1944 and held at Stalag Luft 4 Gross-Tychow later moved to Wobbelin Bei Ludwigslust and held until June 1945 when repatriated through the UK. First edition of this exceedingly scarce instruction manual designed for training heavy bomber crew gunners at the Las Vegas Army Gunnery School during World War II. Prior to 1941 there were no specialized flexible gunnery schools in the United States before 1941 so the Chief of the Air Corps adopted initially in May 1941 a five week course emphasizing sighting range estimates repairing of bomber and aircraft guns aircraft recognition ground range exercises and aviation gunnery ballistics. By 1943 when this manual was created by the Training Department and was a restricted in-house publication nearly 1500 heavy bomber gunners were enrolled and graduating from the courses for the Army Air Corps every month. These manuals offer vital insights into sighting shooting and cleaning the weapons as well as what aircraft ballistics information and incidents to look for which caused jamming or misfiring. In addition there is extensive information on disassembling the weapons and maintaining them vital in combat situations for heavy bomber crew gunners during World War II. Second edition substantially revised & expanded of this very scarce service manual for directing the operations of the U.S. Army Signal Corps at the beginning of the 20th century published just after the San Francisco earthquake & fire. This manual details the equipment and specifications for setting up and maintaining telegraph & telephone lines telegraph codes types of property all of the tools required for their systems and includes sections on wireless telegraphy balloons submarine-cable instruments and fieldglasses. In addition this work includes a detailed section on setting up and operating Post Telephone Systems Telephone systems for Coast Artillery posts as well as the detailed large folding plates showing equipment and maps for establishing them. The Signal Corps was commanded by the famed polar explorer Adolphus Greely 1844-1935 who had been appointed to the post by President Grover Cleveland. Under his command the Signal Corps was vastly expanded and constructed operated and maintained telegraph lines during the Spanish-American War the Philippine Insurrection constructed a line of 4000 miles to Alaska and proved to be a vital lifeline during the aftermath of the San Francisco earthquake & fire in April 1906. In the burned out city the Signal Corps set up 42 telegraph offices and 79 telephone offices connecting all the military districts federal buildings railroad offices & depots city offices and other vital locations.
