Civil War Sergeant William Sebolt Co. H. 43rd New York Regiment Union Army
6 Civil War Letters written and related to William Sebolt Sergeant Company H. 43rd Regiment New York
Various 1874. Letter. Good. 6 manuscript letters 4 of which were written by William Sebolt Sergeant Company H. 43rd Regiment New York Volunteers between November 20th 1861 and March 30th 1862. The 5th letter is written by "Leut Wadsworth A Levidson Surg US Vols in Charge". The 6th letter dated September 24 1874 is written and signed by R. R. R.last name not legible and counter signed by J. H. Baker Commissioner of Pensions. The personal letters by Sebolt are written on patriotic stationary with a closed tear to one letter and a spit to another letter. Sebolt's letters are difficult to decipher and have several misspelled words. The first letter written on 8" x 10" paper 1 page long is dated November 20 and addressed to his friend "Mister Sullivan Smith". Sebolt discusses a general review of the troops - "Thar was eighty thousan troops thar we had a bulley time". The second letter written on 8" x 10" paper 1 page long is dated November 26 1861 and addressed "Dear Wife." The contents are generally about health and weather. The third letter written on 8" x 10" paper 2 pages long is dated December 10 1861 and also addressed to his wife. Sebolt is glad to have heard from her and tells his wife about the weather and living in tents. The last letter written by Sebolt written on 8" x 10" paper and 2 pages long is dated March 30 1862. The letter is addressed to his wife and it appears Sebolt is trying to get home. The fifth letter written on a single sheet one sided 8" x 10" paper is signed by the Surgeon in charge and has given the command to release Sebolt from duty to a disability. This letter is split into two section with no missing text. The last letter in this group came from the "United States of America Department of the Interior Minor Children's Pensions Pension Bureau. " The letter is two pages long and starts with the statement - "it is hereby certified that in conformity with the laws of the United States the minor children herein named of William Sebolt who was a Sergt Co H 43rd Regt.are entitles while living under the age of sixteen years to a pension at the rate of eight dollars commencing on the eleventh day of December 1865.They are each also entitled to two dollars a month additional commencing sixteen Henry M 25 July 1866. William Sebolt or Seybolt was born in Otsego County and enlisted in the 43rd N.Y. Regiment August 12 1861. He died in April 1863 most likely from a disability he received during the War. The 43rd Regiment was in the Army of the Potomac and was in most of the major battles including Antietam Gettysburg and Appomattox. From New York State Military Museum: SEYBOLT WILLIAM.-Age 30 years. Enlisted August t 12 1861 at Cooperstown to serve three years; mustered in as corporal Co. K August t 30 1861; promoted sergeant January or February 1862; transferred to Co. A July 181862; returned to ranks by consolidation July 18 1862; discharged for disability October 211862 at Carver Hospital Washington D . 0 as of Co. K ; also borne as William Sebolt. S. unknown

2 Misc. Civil War letters addressed to Henry 1862-1863
Columbian College Hospital Washington DC; Winchester 1863. Letter. Very good. 2 letters. The first letter 2 pages is written on lined 8" x 10" paper dated September 11 1862 from "Winchester". The letter is addressed to "Dear Henry" and signed by "Mother. " Mother discusses the latest news and health of the family. She is glad Henry's health is fine and hopes the letters written to him by a family friend and the "girls" reaches him. She also asks Henry if he needs more shirts and stockings. Mother states "I wish I could send you a drink of cold water I think it must be hard indeed to have such poor water. I hope this dreadful war will close soon but do not see any prospect of it." The second letter 4 pages long dated March 9th 1863 is written on a sheet of 15" x 10" folded paper. The letter is addressed "Friend Henry" and was written from Columbian College Hospital Washington D.C. and signed at the end by Chas. Wilbur. The contents discuss rumors of the 9th Corps headed to the old Carolina State "but I do not take much stock in it". Wilbur remarks "I am feeling gay as a lark and there is but one thing that troubles me nights that is the fear of going to the Convalescent Camp." Most of the letter describes the day to day activities of Chas. Wilbur and hearing or not heraing from other acquaintance's. unknown

Brazos Island Texas 1847. Document. Very good. 2 8" x 10" sheets of paper. The first document signed at the bottom by Capt. A B Eaton from Brazos Island is dated December 15th 1847 and is addressed to Major Thos. B Eastland q.m. The document reads "Major - I respectfully require of the Quartermaster's Department the necessary transportation receipts in bulk for the Subs Stores herewith invoiced as required by Par 1088 Army Regulations. - Respectfully Your Obt Servt A B Eaton Capt .sp" The second document signed by Eaton on December 17th 1847 is also addressed to Eastland and has the same exact content as the first letter not a copy as the date is different and the writing has variation. A collection of Thomas B. Eastland's papers is held by the California Historical Society. From the Confederate Veteran February 1911 "Eastland Family" "Thomas B. Eastland came to Nashville where he was engaged in business until about 1840 when he went to New Orleans to engage in the cotton brokerage business and where he continued until the breaking out of the Mexican War during which he served under General Zachary Taylor as major." Thomas B. Eastland's diary titled To California Through Texas and Mexico: The Diary of Thomas B. Eastland and Joseph G. Eastland His Son was published by the California Historical Society in 1939 and is 59 pages long. From wikipedia: in 1846 ".it Brazos Island was the first military objective of the US Navy in support of General Zachary Taylor's invasion of Mexico. Control over this important seaport was said by Harvard historian Leroy Graf to be the primary reason for the US invasion of Mexico. From Padre Island NS Historic Research Study Chapter 3 "After the outbreak of hostilities Brazos Island became the primary staging area for the continuing campaign. Volunteers from throughout Texas and the Mississippi Valley converged on the Island and headed inland for camps at Point Isabel and along the Rio Grande." Amos Beebe Eaton the signer of these documents 1806-1877 was a career officer in the United States Army. He was General Zachary Taylor's Chief Commissary of Subsidence during the Mexican War. He was a graduate of West Point in 1826 and was made Brevet Major General of the Union Army in 1865 appointed by Andrew Johnson. unknown
