His account, although criticised strongly for its apparent partiality, is nontheless valuable for its first-hand observations of the German Army at war, from command structures through to weapons and equipment. 'Captain Bacon may be described as a typical Territorial officer, but it must be added that he is a lucky one. He went to India at the beginning of the War, and to Palestine in early 1917 where he took part in the Third Battle of Gaza and the operations leading to the capture of Jerusalem.
