‎Stehender Offizier mit Degen, leicht nach links gewandt.‎

‎o.J. Schwarze Kreide und etwas Bleistift, auf bräunlichem Velin, verso bezeichnet ?Ferdinand von Rayski?. 2124,7 cm. Verso an den Rändern Reste einer alten Verklebung. Vorstudie zu einem Porträt, vermutlich um 1845/55 entstanden. Zur Körperhaltung des Dargestellten vgl.: Ausst. Katalog: Ferdinand von Rayski. Dresden, Galerie Neue Meister 2006, Farbabb. Ss. 65 und 75.‎

‎Von 1823-1825 war Rayski Schüler der Dresdener Akademie. Anschließend war er bis 1829 Gardeoffizier in Ballenstedt. 1831-1834 bildete er sich autodidaktisch zum Porträtmaler in Dresden aus. Es folgte ein erneuter Besuch der Dresdner Akademie. Ein Parisaufenthalt fällt in die Jahre 1834/35. Von 1835-1839 war er auf Reisen mit wechselndem Aufenthalt über Trier, Frankfurt am Main, Würzburg, Mainsondheim in Franken, München und zurück nach Dresden, wo er von Dezember 1839 bis zu seinem Tode festen Wohnsitz nahm, allerdings unterbrochen von zahlreichen kleineren Reisen. Rayski war vornehmlich als Porträtmaler tätig, schuf aber auch Tierstücke und Jagdbilder, gelegentlich auch Landschaften. ?Der größte Bildnismaler und zugleich bedeutendste ?Außenseiter? der Epoche aber war Ludwig Richters Altersgenosse Ferdinand von Rayski, dessen malerisches Genie zu seinen Lebzeiten völlig verkannt wurde.? (zit. aus: H.J. Neidhardt, Die Malerei der Romantik in Dresden. Leipzig, E.A. Seemann, 1976, S. 345). 1906 zur Jahrhundertausstellung wurde Rayskis Talent entdeckt, die Folge war, daß viele deutsche Museen seine Werke erwarben, so die Berliner National-Galerie, die Museen in Bremen, Chemnitz, Dresden, Elberfeld, Hamburg, Kiel, Köln, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Mannheim, München, Nürnberg, Prag, Stettin, Stuttgart und Weimar.‎

He wrote some spelling had been corrected to make reading easier: “I have taken this opr'tunity to Informe you the good State of my helth and well-feare since the Last hoping they may find you in the same good helth with God's blessing and all the familey and you may Exspect to see me please God in the Spring please God. My vessel saild last Sunday for the Spanish Main his voyege will be 3 months I presume and there will come sum part of North America But you will keep your one secrets as I shall not come in the harbour with the vessel as I exspect. She must go to New Found Land. I have had trouble enough here by Reason of sum friends of myne and my owners going home from here as I have been Informed By others and that and the troublesum times here and there has detaind me so long here as the owners Did not Let me know whether they would take…ports of the vessel.
