Massachusetts: A Guide to its Places and People
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company 1937. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good /No Jacket. 8vo. xxxvi 675 pp Illustrated. With 17 maps in text; a tour key map on front end-papers; a Large Pristine color fold-out map with Winter and Summer Recreations and Boston maps on verso in rear pocket. Frederic W. Cook Secretary of the Commonwealth Cooperating Sponsor. American Guide Series: First Edition 1937. The Massachusetts Guide was the third state guide to be published in the American Guide Series preceded by Idaho and Washington D.C. but it was the true prototype for the guidebooks which followed with a three-part format consisting of a section of background essays a section describing cities and larger communities a large section devoted to tours around the state with chronology biblography and index in the appendices. The Massachusetts volume resulted in a major censorship battle over the 'inordinate' amount ot space given to the Sacco-Vanzetti case over both the Boston Massacre and Tea Party. resulting in the creation of an official censor in the Washington office. Historian writing about this controversy generally believed that the Project successfuly held its ground and resisted any text changes. Conrad Aiken a member of the Massachusetts Project wrote some of the text all unsigned. See Mangione p. 105 who notes that Aiken's description of Deerfield has often been cited by critics "as the most poetic passage in all of the American Guide Series." Lightly bumped top fore-edge corner tips with some additional minor edge wear and faintly age-toned text block edges else Pristine no wear. Clean tight and strong binding with no underlining highlighting or marginalia. Blue farbicoid with gilt stamped parallel lines and gilt lettering to front board and spine. With 17 maps in text; a tour key map on front end-papers; a Large Pristine color fold-out map with Winter and Summer Recreations and Boston maps on verso in rear pocket. Frederic W. Cook Secretary of the Commonwealth Cooperating Sponsor. American Guide Series: Unstated Second Edition 1938. Although the absence of a publication date on the title-page is Houghton Mifflin's normal procedure for indicationa a reprint of the first edition this book is actually a second edition probably issued in late 1938 Schoyer 256. The Massachusetts Guide was the third state guide to be published in the American Guide Series preceded by Idaho and Washington D.C. but it was the true prototype for the guidebooks. Major vivible change is a new chapter on "Labor and Industry" completely rewritten from first-edition chapter which was simply titled "Labor" the contents page however still has the original title Schoyer 256. See Mangione p. 105 who notes that Aiken's description of Deerfield has often been cited by critics "as the most poetic passage in all of the American Guide Series." Price clipped. WW2 UNITED NATIONS RELIEF AND REHABILITATION ADMINISTRATION KEENY SM. Spurgeon Milton S. M.
A Mission is Born. Italy - July 1944 - May 1945 Inscribed Presentation Copy
Rome: n.d. ca 1947: by the Author. First Edition. Paperback. Rare privately-published memoir of the activities of the UNRRA in Italy in 1944-45. Keeny was Chief of Mission for the UNRRA in Europe; later became Director of UNICEF in Asia. The presentation is to Paul Gyorgy a Romanian-American medical doctor and researcher who was an expert in pediatric nutrition. Keeny's memoir by his own admission too frank and possibly too "flippant" to become part of the official UNRRA record is scarce; OCLC notes three locations only one at the United Nations in Geneva two others at University of Hawaii and Columbia. Presentation inscription on title page: "To Dr. Paul Gyorgy / from your friend" signed dated 1963. Octavo. Staple-bound printed thick paper wrappers; 187pp. Pulp-paper wrappers slightly chipped at margins; text paper deeply tanned but not brittle; Good or better. by the Author paperback

HISTORIOGRAPHY AT THE END OF THE REPUBLIC Provincial Perspectives on Roman Rule
This study of six historians from the edges of the Roman world at the end of the Republic--the author of I Maccabees, Posidonius, Diodorus Siculus, Pompeius Trogus, Nicolaus of Damascus, and Memnon of Heraclea--combines discussion of their biographical details, the intellectual and elite culture in which they composed, and the methodological difficulties of interpreting fragmentary texts, with textual analysis of their representations of Rome. These authors show remarkable unity in their acceptance of Roman hegemony. Nevertheless, their interpretations of Roman rule assume political significance in the light of their intentions in writing and the audiences whom they addressed. They therefore provide a unique insight into the minds of the conquered peoples and the intellectual culture which allowed them to influence their conquerors. ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 416 pages

Maharashtra Human Development Report 2012: Towards Inclusive Human Development
Sage Publications 2014. Softcover. New. The present Maharashtra Human Development Report MHDR 2012 keeps the spirit of the Eleventh and Twelfth Five Year Plans of ‘faster sustainable and more inclusive growth’ at the core of its analysis. MHDR 2002 was the state’s first effort in focusing on the prevailing human development scenario in the spheres of growth poverty equity education health and nutrition. Since then the state has come a long way in the last decade achieving near-complete enrolments at the primary school level a wide coverage of health infrastructure and initiation of new incentives to name a few. The 2012 Report goes beyond being just a situation-analysis of the current human development scenario to a more analytical exercise in facilitating a deeper understanding of what and where the inequalities are how capabilities can be enhanced what has been the progress where the shortfalls are and where the thrust of efforts to promote human development should be. Recognizing the centrality of inclusive growth processes to human development the need to study human development outcomes disaggregated by gender rural–urban regional and social groups is the focal point of this Report. The outcome would be the identification of specific human development goals evidence-based policy recommendations and directions to how those excluded from the growth and human development processes can be included to reap the benefits of the same.
