The preface justified this segregation by noting "Main emphasis has been placed upon the typical and average piople of the state rather than the exceptional elements. Thus the two essays on folkways deal almost wholly with the Mississippi farmer -- the whites of the Central and Tennessee Hills the negroes of the Delta." Dr. Sterling Brown of the Washington Office was in charge of editing material concerning Afro-Americans. His criticism and objection to the "tone of 'amused condescension' that characterized the treatment of the Negro in this book.
