‎Photo Album: Charles V. Hamilton: Study Commission on U.S. Policy Toward Southern Africa 1979-1981‎

‎Southern Africa 1981. Hardcover. Near Fine. Photo album consisting of 38 color photos belonging to Charles V. Hamilton. In 1967 with cowriter Stokely Carmichael Hamilton published the groundbreaking book Black Power: The Politics of Liberation. Part of the book's and Hamilton's legacy is solidifying the term "institutional racism in public discourse. From 1969 until his retirement in 1998 Hamilton was the Wallace S. Sayre professor of government and political science at Columbia University. This photo album documents the three years Hamilton spent working for the Study Commission on U.S. Policy Toward Southern Africa spanning the years 1979 to 1981. The findings of this study were compiled into a book by Allison Drew titled South Africa: Time is Running Out 1981. A review of the book published in the peer reviewed journal Ufahamu: A Journal of African Studies states that the goal of the report was "to create a policy framework based on United States interests in the South African context." However the review's conclusion is rather critical of the commission's results stating:<br /> <br /> "Although taking a firm stance against petty apartheid and effectively challenging South Africa's view of its own strategic importance the commission's economic policy recommendations amount to a carte blanche for continued United States investments. In essence therefore the commission's suggestions support the status quo. Its recommendation of continued United States investment is in fact a vote of confidence for apartheid . Moderation and maximization of interests within a nonviolent framework are the main themes of this book and moderation is what it seeks from the reader.â€<br /> <br /> This apparently unsuccessful attempt to bridge the gap between public interests and business interests is partially illustrated in the mix of individuals who were involved. Hamilton was appointed as one of 11 commissioners on the study along with other academics and activists such as Ruth Simms Hamilton no relation Aileen C Hernandez and Constance Hilliard. Other members included businessmen such as Alan Pifer the acting president of the Carnegie Corporation at the time; C. Peter McColough the CEO of Xerox; businessman and philanthropist Frank A. Thomas; and J. Irwin Miller a businessman known for his civic activism. We have confirmed photographs featuring both Charles V. Hamilton and Frank A. Thomas and we believe that there are also photos of Ruth Simms Hamilton Aileen C. Hernandez J. Irwin Miller C. Peter McColough and Howard D. Samuel. The photos show them having talks and meeting locals. One shows Hamilton and we believe McColough at a talk on DWEP The Domestic Workers and Employers Project; one shows Thomas with four locals one of them holding an umbrella over Thomas' head; one shows Thomas outside of what appears to be a church speaking to a man with a crowd of children surrounding them; and one shows a large gathering of people Hamilton included in hardhats and jumpsuits. There are also six photos taken at what we believe to be a mansion known as "Graceland" located in Muizenberg Cape Town South Africa. One is a view of what looks to be the back of the house taken from afar then we see exterior shots of commissioners and others drinking coffee and chatting and interior shots of them working. Later in the album perhaps at Graceland a curious photo shows three people looking from a second story railing and displaying a large cartoon. It’s very hard to make out the caption in full but it mentions “the press.â€<br /> <br /> Also included is a bag of personal mementos: four home photographs of a child two including a man and one including a woman a copy of Pages of Time: 1929 the year Hamilton was born given to him for his 74th birthday a card with a newspaper clipping announcing him being appointed professor of government at Columbia University his daughter's Carol ID card from when she worked in the Office of the Secretary at the Department of Commerce as well as her business card from when she was the president of Cooper Hamilton Associates; and three other business cards perhaps of associates.<br /> <br /> Based on the presentation we suspect that this album was a gift given to each of the eleven commissioners though we cannot find another example of it. The album consists of 38 color photographs affixed to thick cardstock pages bound within an album of blue leather boards stamped in silver print on the front board with two lines of silver tooling on the spine. Boards worn but overall a near fine album with the photos clean and bright.<br /> <br /> A behind the scenes look at the Study Commission on U.S. Policy Toward Southern Africa in the time of Apartheid. hardcover‎

Early edition of the correspondence between Emperor Charles V and King Francis I illustrating the strained political situation in Europe during the years 1526-1527. Francis was captured by Charles' army in February 1525 and held captive until he signed the Treaty of Madrid in January 1526 in which he surrendered Italy Artois Flanders and Burgundy to Charles. However he broke the treaty upon his return to France. The present work contains nine documents. Together these were issued as political propaganda intended to counteract the indignation aroused in many parts of Europe when the imperial army invaded Italy and ransacked Rome May 6 1527. Included are inter alia the text of the "Foedus Clementinum" Francis I's refusal to approve the Treaty of Madrid and the imperial letter to the Roman cardinals of October 6 1526 demanding that they summon a general council even against the will of the Pope. Several editions of the work appeared in 1527 including translations into Dutch and French. The present copy comes from the library of Andrew Fletcher of Saltoun 1655-1716.Ad 2 contains two letters one from Pope Clement VII to Emperor Charles V written on the 23rd of June 1526 and the response of the latter written on the 17th of September of the same year. The pope had just entered into an alliance with Francis I against Charles and started the War of the League of Cognac 1526-1530 to drive him away from the Italian Peninsula. Together with ad 1 the present work provides an understanding of the complex political and religious tensions in Europe during the period.With a 17th-century ownership annotation on the title page of ads 1 and 2 "Fletcher". A brown stain on the front board. The work is somewhat browned throughout. ‎Nuremberg 1541. Large 8vo. Johann Petri 18th-century gold-tooled calf richly decorated spine each board with a frame of fillets with small flowers in the four corners red edges. With a large ornamental woodcut coat-of-arms of Charles V helmed mantled crowned and with 2 putti holding the order of the Golden Fleece on the title-page 11 woodcut initials with pictorial decoration 2 series plus 4 repeats. Set in 2 sizes of Venetian-style roman type with larger roman capitals and incidental italic with upright capitals in the Aldine style. 45 1 blank ll. One of the first two editions order uncertain in the original Latin this one published at Nuremberg of the assertion by the “Reichstag” the meeting of the Imperial Counts of the Holy Roman Empire in Regensburg of the Emperor Charles V’s rights to the Duchy of Gelre and the County of Zutphen as well as the rejection of the objections raised by Wilhelm Duke of Cleve and since 1538 also Duke of Gelre at Frankfurt in 1539. It was a loss for the Dukes of Gelre in their struggle against the Emperor Charles V who wanted to include Gelre in his empire. He actually succeeded in doing so in 1543 two years after the present publication. A short list of errata appears at the end.The first three editions of the present Assertio in the original Latin and a German translation all appeared by 1541. Although the present edition is undated the colophon of the 1541 Antwerp edition by Martinus Meranus Marten Vermeere explicitly notes that it follows Petri’s present Nuremberg edition “ad exemplar Joannis Petrei Nurenbergae impressum” which therefore cannot be later than 1541 it is usually ascribed to that year while the Cologne edition by Quentel is dated August 1541. The texts of the Cologne and the present Nuremberg editions show several differences and each has a list of errata at the end but the errata are completely different and neither edition incorporates the corrections from the other suggesting a degree of independence. In very good condition and with large margins leaf size 26.5 x 18.5 cm. Traces of the removal of a large bookplate once pasted on the first endleaf.l USTC 613601 14 copies; VD16 A 3911 8 copies; cf. (spanisch Carlos I, französisch Charles Quint; * 24. Februar 1500 im Prinzenhof, Gent, Burgundische Niederlande; ? 21. September 1558 in Cuacos de Yuste, Spanien) war ein Angehöriger des Herrscherhauses Habsburg, Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches und König von Spanien. Nach dem frühen Tod seines Vaters Philipp I. von Kastilien war Karl Landesherr der Burgundischen Niederlande, bestehend aus elf Herzogtümern und Grafschaften, und ab 1516 nach dem Tod seines Großvaters Ferdinand II. von Aragón zusammen mit seiner für unzurechnungsfähig erklärten Mutter Johanna von Kastillien als Carlos I. der erste König von Spanien, genauer von Kastilien, León und Aragón, die er erblich in einer Personalunion vereinigte. Im Jahr 1519 erbte er das Erzherzogtum Österreich und wurde als Karl V. zum römisch-deutschen König gewählt. 1520 wurde er im Kaiserdom zu Aachen durch den Kölner Erzbischof Hermann V. von Wied zum König gekrönt und trug danach, wie sein Großvater Maximilian I. und seine künftigen Nachfolger, zunächst den Titel ?erwählter Kaiser des Heiligen Römischen Reiches?. Im Jahre 1530 wurde er in der Basilika San Petronio in Bologna (nicht wie üblich in Rom) als letzter römisch-deutscher König von Papst Clemens VII. zum Kaiser gekrönt und war damit nach Friedrich III. der zweite und letzte Habsburger, der von einem Papst gekrönt wurde.‎
