The numerous works of Matthias Earbery16901740 writer and nonjuring Church of England clergyman . . . are largely made up of quantities of historical narrative related with a strong ideological bias often laced with personal abuse - ODNB. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is onlyslight wear to the extremities with just slight browning and marks to the covers. Internally the pages have intermittent spots and slight browning. With a small chip missing from the tail of page nine and a light tidemark to the tale of the pages from the cover to page eight which does not affect the text. Small later ownership inscription on front pastedown. Light foxing and tanning marginal dust soiling. Composed in a neat legible hand. Very good. Untrimmed. A lengthy and highly detailed manuscript volume containing documents related to the British takeover of Minorca after its capture from Spain during the War of Spanish Succession and an investigation into the governance of the island. In September 1708 British forces occupied the Mediterranean island with little opposition the inhabitants and nobles having mostly supported the Anglo-Dutch designs for the Spanish throne. The inherent importance of the island as a military outpost and trading way point in the Mediterranean led the British to occupy it for the rest of the war and to receive it as a possession in the Treaty of Utrecht which ended the conflict in 1713. <br> <br> The documents collected here relate to the English Brigadier Lewis Petit who served as Lieutenant Governor and Chief Engineer of the island during its occupation. As Chief Engineer Petit was in charge of improving the fortifications and defenses of Minorca and although a Spanish ally was named as titular Governor Petit exercised the true authority over the island. Although his improvement plans may have been sound his management of the island's public moneys was suspect. <br> <br> "Petit somehow found time to enter into commercial speculations on his own account. In partnership with two Spaniards and Stanhope's secretary Arent Furley Petit purchased a French prize at Mahón for 7800 dollars with which to trade between Minorca Majorca Sardinia and the Spanish and Barbary coasts. He advised Furley that he had found it necessary to use funds supplied for the fortifications to complete the purchase and urgently requested capital from his partners to repay this misappropriation. Petit's participation was valuable to the enterprise owing to his ability to land cargoes at Mahón without paying duty an activity much objected to by the local town government. <br> <br> "Petit was soon to find himself under the scrutiny of the inspectors sent from London to investigate irregularities in the expenditure of the army in Spain as an attempt to disgrace the previous ministry.The accusations against him concerned imperfections in his accounts including allegations of missing vouchers irregularities and overcharging in the numbers of workmen and mules and alleged differences between prices contracted and prices paid among other charges" - DNB. <br> <br> The documents compiled here therefore relate principally to the investigation of those actions by a specially convened Board of Commissioners and contain Petit's written responses to specific inquiries about his expenditures. In transmitting these answers the reports provide a detailed perspective regarding the management of Minorca's finances defenses and engineering improvements under Petit's charge. Moreover in order to buttress or to undermine those claims voluminous correspondence financial figures construction reports testimonies affidavits and other material are reproduced that span the length of the British occupation of the island before it officially became a possession. A few small light stains to title page. Overall in good to very good condition. 14 pp. 1 blank l. FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this skilled exercise in rhetoric signed Lisbon September 27 1744. The author begins with a discussion of valor the definition of success what it is to have virtue and divine Providence p. 4. This sets the stage for what the anonymous author will develop on the determination of a just war and the atrocities suffered by the French. In the introductory pages the author draws erudite references to mythology with quotations in Latin from Ovid Livy Polybius and Tacitus pp. 4-7 expressing metaphorical allusions to the current situation of the War of the Austrian Succession more specifically of FranceÕs disadvantages. The author uses the word Ã’cowardÓ or Ã’cowardlyÓ throughout with relation to the virtues of the Queen of Hungary Maria Theresa. This sentiment ultimately defines the authorÕs opinion of the queen but is concealed in erudition and intricate syntax. The author cleverly uses anaphora when describing the Hungarian troops Ã’correm os Hungaros porque ao valor anda unida a celeridade correm ardendo nos seus nobres peitos o marcial espirito de que sao dotados. Virulent criticism of the Hungarian kingdom begins most clearly when the author questions whether its subjects are engaged in a just war. The author does not believe it was necessary for the Queen of Hungary to begin a war in Alsace. The descriptions of the losses become more gruesome with accounts of the number of French forces killed and taken prisoner since 1742. In the final pages pp. 10-14 the author tells of Prince CharlesÕ approach to the Rhine and the standoff with the French pp. 10-12. The conclusion ultimately shows the authorÕs ironic tone toward the situation of Prince Charles passing the Rhine and entering Alsace. For example the author leaves it up to Mars to decide if the glory was greater for the PrinceÕs troops to have arrived in Alsace or to have passed the Rhine p. 13 and he continues Ã’Esta a verdade de hum sucesso que immortaliza dos AustrÂ’acos a fama. Estas as ventagens com quem andam cobardes as competenciasÓ p. 13. Charles Alexandre duc de Lorraine 1712-1780 was one of the principal military commanders during the War of the Austrian Succession. He was defeated by Frederick the Great at the Battle of Chotusitz in 1742 and the Battle of Hohenfriedberg later in 1745. In the same year he married Maria Theresa of Austria's sister. He was later named governor of the Austrian Netherlands and Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights. The War of the Austrian Succession began in 1740 with the death of Emperor Charles VI. It included several small conflicts: the War of Jenkins' Ear which began in 1739 King George's War in North America 1744-1748 and two Silesian wars finally ending in 1748 with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle which mostly returned territories to the status quo ante. A rare political leaflet petitioning Parliament for relief of warrant officers who had fought in the recent War of the Spanish Succession. In March 1715 the House of Commons ordered that a list of all the regimental and warrant officers be drawn up but by the time this document was printed numerous warrant officers had not been entered into the list and rumors had begun to circulate that they would therefore not be receiving expected compensation for their service. "Besides the Nature of several of the Warrant Officers Posts was such as they could not be put on a Regimental List viz. Directors of Hospitals Commissaries Officers who have lost their Limbs and many other Officers whose particular Hardships Pretensions and Disappointments are more at large set forth and specify'd in their several Warrants. So that their Condition is very deplorable." This is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715. Lord George Douglas-Hamilton 1666-1737 was a Scottish Williamite officer during the Glorious Revolution who later married William III's mistress Elizabeth Villiers became a confidant of William was created Earl of Orkney in 1696 was appointed Governor of Virginia in 1714 and in 1736 was the first British general promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. In 1701 at the beginning of the War of the Spanish Succession Hamilton led the First Regiment of Foot the Royal Scots to the Netherlands where the regiment fought for the remainder of the war. Despite their long service and the high position of Hamilton the officers suggest in the present petition that having been so long overseas they had been forgotten by the British government and charge that they had not received their pay even after frequent petitions. The document is an early example of lobbying literature which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons at the time of the accession of King George I and the British general election of 1715.
